Two of the most highly skilled welterweights, BJ Penn and Jon Fitch, fought to a controversial majority draw in the UFC: 127 main event—Penn looked strong earlier, but Fitch dominated the third round.
With the grudge middleweight fight of Michael Bisping against the mouthy Jorge Rivera, UFC 127 had two solid main events along with an exciting undercard. The exclusive behind-the-scenes segments for the DVD really gives you a different look at the fighters as they explore Australia. Prelim and main card bouts now all have pre-bout and post-bout interviews.
Penn and Fitch’s war of words has it’s own segment on the DVD, as Fitch looked to really upset Penn with the “I’m going to kill him and take his power,” comment at the UFC press conference. Penn admits that comment lit a fire in him and that he was more motivated to beat Fitch.
Penn surprised Fitch in the early stages of the fight, taking down Fitch several times and nearly choking him out. However, Fitch regrouped and showed he had superior cardio—Fitch wailed on Penn for nearly a whole round. Did Fitch do enough in the third or was Penn’s ability to control the majority of the fight enough to give The Prodigy the win? If you missed it, you can judge for yourself.
Bisping is one of the most featured fighters in the extras going around chatting with fans, going bowling, going to get ice cream, and making the random Rivera comment. ”I got better boxing, better wrestling and I’m better looking. What the fuck does he have?” On the day of the fight, Rivera said he had no regrets for all the trash talking he did and he promised every punch was going to be hard.
When Bisping and Rivera got into the octagon you knew you were in for an explosive fight. Bisping nailed an illegal knee to the head that many might claim was on purpose. Although Rivera continued despite the fight doctor suggesting to end the fight, Rivera was slow and sluggish and became an easy target for Bisping. Bisping got into Rivera’s face after the fight. While Bisping does apologize in his interview with Joe Rogan, in the extras he does not feel bad about it because he was ”pissed off.”
The debut of the unique style presented by Brian Ebersole was shockingly effective against Chris Lytle. Dennis Siver displayed his strength against George Sotiropolus even though Sotiropolus did have majority cage control in the fight. UFC 127 was another high quality UFC event that had more than enough drama and excitement for one show.
