TUF Brazil: Episode 1 notes and results

Episode 1- March 26, 2012
This season of TUF is coached by Team Vitor Belfort in green and Team Wanderlei Silva in blue. There will be two Ultimate Fighters crowned as the season features featherweights (145 lbs.) and middleweights (185 lbs.). Wanderlei and Vitor will fight at the conclusion of this season.
All 32 fighters are assembled in the HSBC arena in Rio de Janeiro and will fight for spots in the house on this episode.  There will be 16 fights, 8 at middleweight and 8 at featherweight. The fights will be set for 2 rounds of 5 minutes.
All fighters are instructed to put on their headphones for translation when Dana White appears to address them in English. One of the fighters is crying while DW gives them a pep talk about fighting hard and how big of an opportunity they have.
Rony “Jason” Mariano (10-3) v. Dileno Lopes (7-0) (peso pena-145lbs.)
Round 1-Mariano lands a solid leg kick and a punch but gets knocked down on a counter-punch by Lopes. Lopes lands several punches but Mariano recovered and got back to his feet. Mariano landed a flying knee and a solid punch that knocked out Lopes.

Francisco Drinaldo (10-1) v. Charles Michael (8-1) (peso medio- 185 lbs.)
Round 1- The fighters exchange right away and Drinaldo lands a knee to the face of Michael that drops him to the mat. Drinaldo lands heavy hammer punches and the referee jumps in. The fight didn’t even go 30 seconds.

Godofredo “Pepey” De Oliveira (8-0) v. Johnny “Cabeca” Goncalves (4-0) (peso pena- 145 lbs.)
Round 1- Pepey lands an early takedown but gets swept. Pepey locks in a triangle position and forces the arm-bar submission.

Cezar “Mutatnte” Ferreira (4-2) v. Gustavo Sampaio (5-1) (peso medio-185 lbs.)
Round 1- Sampaio lands some good punches and a heavy leg kick but is clinched by Ferreira. Sampaio is unable to escape the clinch and goes to the mat in guard. Ferreira lands some elbows that cut Sampaio and is warned for strikes to the back of the head. Ferreira lands illegal downward-pointed elbows strikes to Sampaio’s legs and is stood up. I’d score Round 1 for Mutante: 10-9
Round 2- Both fighters exchange heavy punches in the early going with Sampaio getting the advantage. Ferreira scored a takedown and secured a guillotine choke to force the submission.

Hugo “Wolverine” Viana (5-0) v. Alexandre “Sangue” Ramos (5-0) (peso pena- 145 lbs.)
Round 1- Viana clinches Ramos against the cage and Ramos attempts a flying triangle. The move brings them to the mat but Viana escapes the triangle position and lands in guard. Viana lands many punches to the body and head in guard until he eventually lands a solid elbow that knocks Ramos out cold.

Sergio “Serginho” Moraes (6-1) v. Thiago Rela (3-1) (peso medio)
Round 1- Amazingly Rela attempts a takedown early on the World jiu-jitsu champion Serginho. Moraes avoids the takedown and lands one of his own. Rela attempts a leg-lock and the two find themselves with their legs locked together exchanging punches on the mat. Serginho finds a hold of Rela’s heel and hooks it to force a submission.

Giovanni “Soldado” Souza jr. (10-1) v. John “Macapa” Teixeira (12-0) (peso pena- 145 lbs.)
Round 1- Macapa hit Soldado with a knee to the groin that was not caught immediately by the referee which allowed Teixiera to land some punches to his hurt opponent before the referee realized something was wrong. A brief pause was taken but Souza returned to action. Souza hit a low knee on Teixeira when the fight resumed which prompted another momentary pause. Teixeira scored a takedown and went to take Souza’s back but was swept. Teixeira then went for an arm-bar which he locked in and forced Souza to submit.

Marcos Vinicius “Vina” Pancini (19-3) v. Pedro Nobre (10-0) (peso pena-145 lbs.)
Round 1- Pancini lands a heavy right hand that drops Nobre and follows him with some heavy punches on the ground. Nobre goes for a leg-lock but Pancini escapes. Nobre gets to his feet but Pancini lands more heavy punches that wobble and drop Nobre to end the fight.

Samuel Trinidade (6-1) v.  Leonardo “Macarrao” Mafra (5-0) (peso medio- 185 lbs.)
Round 1- Mafra lands a right hand that drops Trinidade but he lets him back up to his feet. Mafra lands solid punches but trips when attempting a jumping knee strike. Trinidade falls on Mafra and lands in his guard. Mafra sweeps Trinidade and gets back to his feet. I’d score this Round for Mafra: 10-9
Round 2- Mafra lands more heavy punches but also takes some punches from Trinidade. Mafra avoids takedown attempts from Trinidade and lands several solid punches. I’d score this Round for Mafra: 10-9
For some reason there is a third round.
Round 3- Both fighters are tired and have less in their punches but Mafra continues the assault. Trinidade is unable to take down his opponent and eats a big uppercut but does not stumble. Mafra continues to land heavy blows to the iron chin of Trinidade. Trinidade is finally about to score a takedown at the end of the final round and attempts a triangle choke as the fight comes to an end. I’d score this round for Mafra: 10-9

All 16 winning fighters are lead back into the octagon to be congratulated by Dana White. Some look beaten up and are limping after their fights.
