The all-women’s MMA promotion Invicta FC held their second event at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. The event was headlined by Olympic Silver medalist and undefeated mixed martial artist Sara McMann and 20-fight veteran Shayna Baszler. McMann avoided a near knockout and was able to keep her perfect record intact with a unanimous decision over Baszler. Baszler was the superior striker in the first round, but was out muscled by McMann’s prolific wrestling ability in the second, where she almost submitted McMann with a kneebar. McMann was saved by the bell in the final moments of the third round when she was tagged by Baszler with short hook. On wobbly legs McMann was able to clinch Baszler for the remainder of the round to edge Baszler out in a decision.
Alexis Davis dominated Japanese sensation Hitomi Akano with a second round rear-naked choke submission. Davis bullied Akano in the striking game and stuffed takedown attempts throughout the first round. Davis knocked Akano down in the opening seconds of the second, and scored a takedown where she proceeded to pound away at Akano. Davis violently delivered a series of knees to the body on her way to taking Akano’s back, where she forced her to tap at the 3:41 mark of the round.
The undefeated Japanese sensation Ayaka Hamasaki made her North American debut in impressive fashion. Unlike many Japanese superstars who fail in transitioning to the North American style of MMA, Hamasaki submitted Lacey Schuckman with 15-seconds remaining in the bout. The Jewels champion Hamasaki, worked diligently to bring the bout to the mat as often as possible. Schuckman was able to fight off most of the takedowns and submission attempts, but was caught with an arm bar, forcing her to tap.
STRIKEFORCE veterans Amanda Nunes and Liz Carmouche both picked up rear-naked choke submissions in their bouts. Nunes avoided being submitted herself by Raquel Pa’aluhi, when Pa’aluhi attempted to transition from rear-naked choke to arm bar. Nunes was able to escape and lock in her own rear-naked choke for the win. Carmouche began her bout with Kaitlin Young in striking war, but ended the bout in the second via submission. Carmouche landed a beautiful striking combination, and slammed Young the ground, where she would transition multiple times to eventually get Young’s back. Once in that position Carmouche delivered some heel kicks to setup the rear-naked choke and force the tap. (Full Invicta FC 2 event results below.)
Elite 1 MMA Redemption took place at the Redball Internet Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick. In the main event Welterweight champion Richard Arsenault squared off against Instinct MMA, Ringside MMA, W-1 MMA, and Aggression MMA veteran Ricky Goodall. The two Welterweights went back and forth in an all out war for five rounds, with Arsenault picking up rounds one, two and five, and Goodall picking up round three and four. All three judges rendered a unanimous decision of 48-47 Richard Arsenault who retains the championship.
The card also featured many familiar names to the Canadian and Quebec MMA scene with Nabil Khatib, Matt MacGrath, and Jesse Ronson on the card. Team Bushido & Tristar’s Nabil Khatib faced Canadian journeyman and recent Bellator fighter Matt MacGrath. From the minute that MacGrath scored an early takedown on Khatib it was evident that something was wrong. During a transition attempt from MacGrath, the referee halted the action to check on a Khatib’s condition. Khatib ensured the referee that he was fine and the action continued for a short period of time. While in side control MacGrath landed a few punches and elbows before Khatib tapped out due to injury at the 73-second mark of the first round.
In a rematch from his first pro bout in 2009 Jesse Ronson defeated Eric St-Pierre. The AM Ford Fight Night Lightweight champion Ronson repeated his actions from three years ago by ending the bout with a knockout at an Elite 1 MMA event. (Full Elite 1 MMA: Remdemption event results below.)
Gym Wars 7 was held at the UFAI gym in Burlington, Vermont on Saturday night. The card featured two amateur MMA, two submission grappling bouts, and four Muay Thai bouts featuring fighters from various fight camps including UFAI, Contenders Gym, Villari’s Gym, Underdog BJJ, Martial Way, Montpellier BJJ, VTMA and others. Each bout had a decisive winner as none of the bouts made it to the judges score cards. In the main event, featherweight Muay Thai fighters Jesse Mabe and Ben McAllister squared off in a contenders bout. Mabe forced the referee to call a halt to the action at 2:45 of the first round declaring him the winner via TKO. In the only pure knockout of the night, Welterweight Nic Gomez made short work of Billy Walsh when he connected with a head kick 39 seconds into the bout, possibly breaking Walsh’s jaw in the process.
