Send to Kindle

Quebec’s #1 amateur MMA promotion returns on Saturday February 16th, 2013 for Victory MMA 8: Bulletproof at the Theatre Plaza inVMMA 8 Montreal. The event will be hosted by Ringside Report Radio’s Kevin “Big Tuna” McKough. A 16-bout card is set with four championships on the line including a Bantamweight title defense and new champions in the Light Heavyweight, Lightweight and Featherweight divisions.

The Victory MMA Bantamweight champion Kevin Chauvette will be featured in the main event defending his title against Dwayne Durel. This will be Chauvette’s first title defense since winning the strap at Victory MMA 5 in March of 2012.

The co-main event will determine an interim Light Heavyweight champion now that former champion Adam Dyczka is unable to compete due to injury. McGowan’s MMA/Victory Training Centre’s Chris Cleveland squares off against Gladiateur Fight Club de Sorel’s  Mathieu Langlais.

After coming up short in his first attempt at the Lightweight title at Victory MMA 6 in May of 2012 in an armbar submission loss to then champion Alex Morgan, who vacated the title after the bout to go pro; Big Country MMA’s Joe Elliott gets other shot. Elliot racked up three victories since the loss including a huge win over Rob Rivest. Elliot faces Team Barbarian’s Maxime Martens who has only one blemish on his record in six bouts.

Kevin Walker also came up short in his championship aspirations when he failed to defeat then champion Xavier Aloui at Victory MMA 7 in July. With Aloui out of the picture Walker gets another opportunity at the gold when he faces Thomas Sumantri of Fighter Dream Team. All championship bouts are scheduled for five rounds.

Weekend in Fights! July 14th Edition

Send to Kindle

This Weekend in Fights (July 14th, 2012) began on Wednesday night with UFC on FUEL TV 4 and continued on Friday with Legacy Fighting Championship 12, BAMMA USA, Matrix Fights 6, and  Saturday with STRIKEFORCE: Rockhold vs. Kennedy, United Combat Sports 6, Anarchy 1, and Victory MMA 7.

UFC on FUEL TV 4 began our weekend from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California on Wednesday night. The main event featured the Middleweight title eliminator bout between the “Filipino Wrecking Machine” Mark Munoz and the undefeated Chris Weidman. Weidman dominated from the get go, taking down Munoz with easy controlling the first round from various positions with the fight on the mat. A little under 90-seconds in the second round, Weidman connected with a beautiful uppercut elbow, busting Munoz’s forehead and sending him crashing to the mat. Weidman pounced on Munoz with a flurry of ground and pound strikes to end the bout. Referee John Rosenthal made a poor judgement call by not stopping the fight earlier, as Munoz was victim to many unnecessary strikes. Weidman improves to 5-0 in the UFC and undefeated as a mixed martial artist.

Also on this card, Aaron Simpson made a successful drop to Welterweight with a dominate three round decision over Kenny Robertson. Tristar fighter Francis Carmont improved to 3-0 in the UFC with a second round rear-naked choke stoppage of Karlos Vemola, handing him his first loss at Middleweight. T.J. Dillashaw weathered the striking storm of Vaughan Lee with wrestling and a quick  submission midway through the first round. Dropping from Bantamweight to Flyweight Chris Cariaso out struck Josh Ferguson, winning all three rounds. (Full UFC on FUEL TV 4 event results below.)

On Friday night Legacy Fighting Championship held their 12th event at the Arena Theater in Houston, Texas. The main card was broadcast on the new AXS TV, which is the former HDNet. LFC had orginally planned on crowning their first Flyweight champion for the main event with Will Campuzano versus Chad Robichaux. Robichaux pulled out last minute due to medical reasons, and the bout was scrapped entirely. Former IFL Welterweight champion, UFC, WEC, STRIKEFORCE and Bellator Season 4 Welterweight tournament winner Jay Hieron stepped up to the plate to serve as the evenings main event. Hieron squared off against Romario Da Silva. Hieron choked out Da Silva with an arm-triangle choke early in the second round.

Jiu-Jitsu coach to many top MMA fighters Robert Drysdale displayed his grappling prowess with a 90-second arm bar submission of Isaac Villanueva. Drysdale continues to remain undefeated with four first round submissions to his credit.

Current Cage Warriors Heavyweight champion D.J. Linderman a veteran of Bellator and Instinct MMA squared off against Bellator veteran Dale Mitchell. Linderman picked a second round TKO over Mitchell, improving his win streak to three. (Full Legacy Fighting Championship 12 event results below.)

BAMMA USA Bad Beat 6 featured former UFC competitor Mike Guymon taking on Mike Dizak at Commerce Casino in Commerce, California. Guymon picked a unanimous decision over Dizak after three rounds. Guymon is now riding a two fight win streak since “retiring” after losing to DeMarques Johnson in January of 2011. (Full BAMMA USA Bad Beat 6 event results below.)

Also on Friday night,  Matrix Fights 6 took place at Sheet Metal Union Workers Hall in Philadephia. In the main event of the card Bellator veteran Wilson Reis got the judges nod after three rounds with Cody Stevens. Guest of July 11th Episode of Ringside Report Radio, Munah Holland knocked out Carina Damm mid way through the second round. Holland landed a huge right hand that dropped Damm, rendering her unconscious. (Full Matrix Fights 6 event results below.)

On Saturday night Strikeforce Rockhold vs. Kennedy aired on Showtime from the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. Two championship bouts took place at STRIKEFORCE Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold squared off against Tim Kennedy in his second title defense. Nate Marquardt and Tyron Woodley battle for the vacant STRIKEFORCE Welterweight title. Luke Rockhold and Tim Kennedy battled for five round with Rockhold winning four of five to get the unanimous decision to retain middleweight title.

After a year of absence Nate Marquardt returned to MMA. Marquardt made his STRIKEFORCE and Welterweight debut in impressive fashion by capturing the STRIKEFORCE Welterweight. Marquardt handed Tyron Woodley his first loss with a beautiful punch, elbow combination against the cage to knockout Woddley in the fourth. (Full STRIKEFORCE: Rockhold vs. Kennedy event results below.)

A second event took place in Oregon on Saturday night with United Combat Sports’ Caged Combat 6 at the Spirit Mountain Casino, Grand Ronde. Current ShoFight Welterweight champion but Lightweight fighter John Gunderson headlined the event with David Castillo. Gunderson who came off the biggest win of his career against Karo Parisyan last month looked to improve his win streak to three, but was unable to. His opponent Castillo forced him to tap in the fourth round with a rear-naked choke, retaining his title and extending his win streak to five. (Full UCS – Caged Combat 6 event results below.)

Vermont based Anarchy held their inaugural event at Collins Perley Complex in Saint Albans, Vermont on Saturday night.  Four championship bout took place as well as 9 other bouts. UFC Flyweight Chris Cariaso was on hand as a guest judge and Ringside Report Radio’s Kevin McKough manned the ring announcing duties. In the main event Featherweight champion Matt Durling retained his championship in the most peculiar way. Connect with a few soft strikes Durling was transitioning to take Christopher Johnson’s back, and Johnson tapped out.

The co-main event featured the crowning of the Lightweight title with Tyler Jacques versus Brett Trahan. In what was a very even match up, Jacques and Trahan went back and forth with take downs and strikeing combinations. After getting tagged a few times, Trahan looked to be a wobbly legs. Aware of his opponents condition, Jacques came rushing in with a flurry of punches to the head. Jacques connected with a big right hand that sent Trahan crashing to the mat to captured the title.

Alex Laush captured the Anarchy Middleweight title with a complete destruction of Burlington Brawl champion Eric Bruno. Laush connected with some powerful strikes through the first two rounds, busting Bruno over his right eye. Uncharacteristic of the kickboxer, Laush ended the bout with a arm-triangle submission against the crafty grappler. With his proficiency in Jiu-Jitsu Bruno held on to thinking he could fight through it, but was put to sleep.

North East Assassin’s Jay McLean captured the Bantamweight title by defeated “King” James McMillan via unanimous decision after five round. McLean controlled the bout with takedown attempts, he was unsuccessful in the majority of his attempts because McMillan repeatedly held on to the ropes. McMillan was deducted two points during the bout for holding the ropes.

Local favorite Connor McKenna made short work of Todd Duvall when he took Duvall down and proceeded to pound away until the referee was forced to step in.

In the most controversial moment of the night, Jiu-Jitsu Nation’s Jake Bohn was kicked in the face by Chris Rooney while he was down, and the referee didn’t call the illegal strike as it wasn’t visible to his vantage point. Bohn coach Marc Stevens freaked out and jumped on the ring apron yelling at the referee. Commissioners attempted to get Stevens down while the bout continued. Rooney connected with a punch that sent Bohn’s mouthpiece out of the ring. The referee continued to call the action and not halt the bout while many people searched for the month piece. This amplified Stevens rage who continued to throw a fit at ringside. Bohn continued into the second round without a mouth piece, but received a pep talk from Stevens that motivated his to end the bout in the second round by choking out Rooney with an arm-triangle. Marc Stevens and his Jiu-Jitsu Nation camp celebrated in poor sportsmanship manner, which cause Rooney’s Mad Coalition camp to get upset. The combination of the illegal kick to Bohn, and Bohn choking out Rooney the two camps began to argue in the crowd in a riot like manner, which cause security to split them apart and force them to exit the venue through separate exits.

The fight of the night goes to David Castro-Munoz and Jason Torres. The two fighters fought for three rounds of with Castro-Munoz picking up the unanimous decision, but from bell to bell this bout was a display of great striking, ground work, and overall skills from both competitors.

Scott and Dakota Gigure made Vermont MMA history by being the first father and son to compete on the same card. Dakota made his father proud when he forced the referee to step in during the first round to end his bout with Derek Chadwell. Scott however, was not a lucky as his son. Scott’s opponent Patrick Reardon rushed him immediately, busting him up and ending the bout in 55-seconds. (Full Anarchy 1: Exile event results below.)

Victory MMA 7 took place at the CEDA Community Centre in Montreal on Saturday night. In the main event Victory MMA Featherweight Champion Xavier Aloui successfully made his first title defense by submitting Kevin Walker with one second left in the fourth round.

Victory MMA Welterweight Champion Alex Fecteau retained his title and snapped Stephen Oppong’s six-fight win streak with an arm bar submission in the third round. Also on the card, Joe Elliott played spoiler for the returning Rob Rivest by edging him out with a split decision. Samuel Moisan was able to avenge his arm bar submission loss to Olivier Carrier by knocking him out in the third round. (Full Victory MMA 7 event results below.)

Victory MMA 7 July 14th

Send to Kindle

Quebec’s #1 amateur MMA promotion Victory MMA returns on July 14th with another stacked card from promoter Jamie McGowan. Originally slated for the Victory MMA Headquarters of Academie Sportive Parc, the event has been moved to the new location of the CEDA Community Centre, 2515 Delisle, Montreal.

In the main event,  Featherweight Champion Xavier Aloui (8-1) defends his title against McGowan MMA standout Kevin Walker. Uncharacteristically of a fighter to move up a weight class, the former Victory MMA Bantamweight champion, Aloui relinquished that title to capture  the promotions Featherweight title when Michael Dufort turned pro. Aloui defeated Mathieu Boisvert twice in two fantastic bouts for both the Bantamweight and Featherweight titles. Aloui and Walker have a similar opponent in Samuel Moisan who knocked out Aloui his only loss, but was submitted in 23-seconds by Walker. Walker (4-1) suffered his first defeat at the hands of Steve Rossignol in a controversial decision that is under appeal at Victory MMA 6 on May 26th. Walker plans on redeeming himself by taking the strap from Aloui in what will be a great bout.

In the co-main event newly crowned Victory MMA Interim Welterweight champion Alex Fecteau squares of against Stephen Oppong.  With current Victory MMA Welterweight champion O’Denva Phillips going pro, Fecteau’s interim championship has now become the official title. Nordik Fight Club’s Fecteau (7-3) captured the championship on May 26th with a first minute arm bar submission Matthew Richardson. While his opponent Stephen Oppong (6-1) picked up his a unanimous decision victory over Benjamin Dionne-Houle. With six victories in a row, Oppong has earned himself a shot and now the two will meet in possibly five three minute rounds for the strap.

Samuel Moisan (3-2) and Olivier Carrier (4-3) will meeting again in a rematch from Ring Extreme 19 in October of 2011. Carrier submitted Moisan is the second round with an arm bar. Eight months later, can  Carrier top Moisan again and improve his win streak to three or will Moisan return to his winning ways? With fight night rapidly approaching we can only imagine a great bout from the two Featherweights climbing the ranks to a title shot.

After semi-retirement, Brazilian Top Team Canada’s Rob Rivest returns to action for the first time since December of 2010 to take on Victory MMA Lightweight title contender Joe Elliott.  Rivest (4-1) lost his last amateur MMA bout to now pro fighter Kyle Nelson at Battle at GAMMA 3, but returned to his winning ways at Battle at GAMMA 4 in February 2011 in a Muay Thai fight.  Although losing is his last outing, Elliot brought the fight to Alex Morgan, and is looking to play spoiler for Rivest’s return.

Victory MMA 7 also includes notable amateur fighters from McGowan’s MMA, Tristar, Nordik Fight Club, Orion, Big Country MMA, Toronto BJJ, Xtreme Couture Toronto, Long Thai Mauy That and many more.

For more info visit the official Victory MMA website: www.victorymma.tv and Facebook Group. All bouts will be available on the website and YouTube channel following the event.

Advance tickets are $25 and are available at Thai Long Muay Thai, from the fighters directly or from the promoter Jamie McGowan at 514-239-5616. Tickets at the door are $30.

Weekend in Fights! March 24th Edition

Send to Kindle

This Weekend in Fights! (March 24th) was jam packed with awesome fights from Bellator & Xplode Fight Series in the U.S., BAMMA in the U.K., Strength & Honor Championship in  Switzerland, and Victory MMA here in Montreal.

On Friday night, Bellator 62 took place at the Lerado Energy Center in Lerado, Texas. Season 6 Lightweight tourney kicked off its opening round with Thiago Michel, Rick Hawn, Lloyd Woodard and Brent Weedman all advancing to the semi finals.Michel edged out Rene Nazare with a split decision in the only bout going the distance. Woodard and Weedman both picked up submission victories. Woodard submitted Patricky “Pitbull” Freire with a cringing kimura trapping Freire’s head between his legs in a crucifix position causing a small fracture. While Weedman pulled off an extraordinary Von Flue choke over J.J. Ambrose in the second round. Rick Hawn was the sole tournament competitor to score a TKO victory, as he did it over Ricardo Tirloni in the first round. (Full Bellator 62 event results below.)

BAMMA 9 took place at National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England. Tristar/Jackson’s MMA fighter and BAMMA Middleweight champion Tom Watson successfully retained his championship, with a second round TKO victory over Jack Marshman. Watson is now riding a three fight and three title defense streak.  Another member of Jackson’s MMA Jake Murphy, who submitted David Round with a rear-naked choke in under two minutes of the second round. Instinct MMA veteran Patrick Vallee picked up a arm bar submission win over Andrew Punshon in the second round. (Full BAMMA 9 event results below.)

Former TKO & WEC Featherweight veteran Danny Martinez, who now competes at Flyweight was successful on Saturday for California based promotion Xplode Fight Series. Martinez made short work of debuting Rich Bonafidini with a first round TKO victory. The match making for this bout was questionable, as Martinez is a veteran of 19 bouts, while his opponent Bonafidini never fought before on the professional level. Why would the California State Athletic Commission approve of this match making considering the large discrepancy of experience between each fighter? After looking at the results of this card, with many fights ending in under 20 seconds and 8 of 15 bouts not making out of the first minute, the Martinez bout doesn’t seem like it was the only bad job. (Full Xplode Fight Series – Disarm event results below.)

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Goran Reljic picked up an impressive first round TKO over Rogent Llorent in a Heavyweight bout, at Strength & Honor Championship in Geneva, Switzerland on Saturday. With this win Reljic is now riding a two fight win streak since being released from the UFC after three consecutive losses in the promotion in 2010. (Full Strength & Honor Championship event results below.)

Victory MMA returned on Saturday night with Victory MMA 5: Strikers Collide at Academie Sportive in Montreal. Three new champions were crowned, as former Bantamweight champion Xavier Aloui took on his last Bantamweight challenger Mathieu Boisvert for the Featherweight crown. Reminiscent of their last bout, this fight was action packed with great grappling and heavy strikes. During the third round, Aloui pulled off a beautiful inverted triangle choke, forcing Boisvert to tap. Aloui is still undefeated in amateur action, and claims his second Victory MMA title in two weight classes. Kevin Chauvette and Alex Baez went toe-to-toe in a five round war, that saw Chauvette squeak by with a split decision to claim the Victory MMA Bantamweight title. In the main event Team Bergeron’s Remy Bussieres took home the Victory MMA Middleweight title against Domenic Ruccolo with a rear-naked choke submission in the third round. Also on the card, Christophe Alfonzo continued his undefeated streak with a controversial split decision victory over previously undefeated Merouane Ghalmi. (Full Victory MMA 5: Strikers Collide event results below.)

Victory MMA Returns Saturday March 24th

Send to Kindle

Quebec’s best amateur MMA promotion, Victory MMA returns to Academie Sportive Fight Club, on Saturday, March 24 for Victory MMA 5: Strikers Collide. Hosted by Ringside Report Radio’s Kevin “Big Tuna” McKough, the action will began at 7pm with a 14 bout fight card, including 3 championship bouts.

Of those championship bouts, fans will get to see a championship rematch from Victory MMA 4, but not in the same weight class. Bantamweight champion and product of JKS, Xavier Aloui (7-0), has relinquished his championship in order to capture the promotions Featherweight crown; and will be doing so against his Victory MMA 4 opponent, Fight Club de St-Jean’s Mathieu Boisvert (8-4). Boisvert and Aloui only fought for a mere two minutes when the last met, yet was an amazing display of submission grappling. The two will meet on Saturday for the vacant Victory MMA Featherweight champion, as former champion Michael Dufort recently made his Pro MMA debut at Ringside 13.

With Xavier Aloui jumping up to Featherweight, Victory MMA will crown a new Bantamweight champion. Kevin Chauvette (4-2) of Drummondville’s Ultimaction gym, will take on McGowan’s MMA product, Alex Baez (5-2) in five, three minute rounds.

In the crowning of the inaugural Victory MMA Middleweight champion Member of Team Bergeron, in Drummondville, Remy Bussieres (8-2) takes on product of  Revolution Gym and McGowan’s MMA, here in Montreal, Domenic Ruccolo (6-1).

In one of the Kickboxing bouts of the evening, two undefeated fighters step in the ring, as Long Thai Muay Thai’s Merouane Ghalmi (3-0) takes on  Academie Sportive’s  Christophe Alfonzo (6-0) in what should be a fantastic stand up war.
