Weekend in Fights! June 9th Edition

This Weekend in Fights! (June 9th, 2012) saw only two events take place with the UFCon FX 3 and Aggression FC 9.

Kicking off the Friday night of fights was UFC on FX 3 from BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. The headliner was a Flyweight tournament semifinal rematch from March 3rd, where the mistakenly tallied up the scores incorrectly, initially giving the bout to Johnson after three rounds. After the event the scores were recounted and the bout declared a draw prompting this rematch. Johnson and McCall returned to FX, with another three round affair that should have been five because of its main event status. Nonetheless, the two Flyweight competitors went the distance again with Johnson emerging as the victor taking the bout 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28 on the judges score cards. Johnson  controlled the fight early landing a takedown in the first minute of  the opening round setting the pace for the fight. Johnson landed a big punch sending McCall to the ground and worked in McCall’s guard. Reminiscent of the first bout, McCall too control in the second round with a flurry of strikes, a takedown, and a suplex after connecting with an accidental low blow. In the third round, Johnson was able to get a takedown and control the fight on the ground and stifle McCall’s stand up offense. Johnson will now square off against Joseph Benavidez in the inaugural Flyweight tournament to determine the first ever UFC Flyweight champion later this year.

Welterweights Erick Silva and Charlie Brenneman battled in a very exciting one round bout. High octane from the get go, Brenneman shot in for the takedown immediateley but was me by the fists and knees of Silva. Brenneman eventually got the takedown but was unable to keep Silva down for long. Brenneman was adamant about scoring another takedown pushing Silva against the cage forcing the referee to break it up numerous times. Silva connected with spin kick to the body dropping Brenneman to his knees and exposing his back. Silva jumped on the opportunity and secured a rear-naked choke for the win with four seconds remaining in the first round.

Three extremely impressive knockouts took place on this card as Mike Pyle knocked out Josh Neer with four seconds remaining in the first round. With lots of back and forth action from both fighters, Pyle only needed one punch to end it. Pyle controlled the majority of the bout and even played possum luring Neer in for the kill shot. With an exchange of knees and body shots Pyle connected with a huge right hand dropping Neer to the mat face first.

Eddie Wineland scored a second round knockout of Scott Jorgensen picking up his first UFC victory. Wineland was able to stuff the takedown attempts and turn this bout into a striking war. In the second round Jorgensen connected with a big knee as they broke apart from brawling busting Wineland’s face up something awful. Wineland ignored the blood pouring down his face and continued his assault. Wineland then threw two jabs that didn’t reach its mark, but the straight right that followed did dropping Jorgensen and ending the fight.

And finally Tim Means continued his 11-fight win streak with a 66-second TKO over Justin Salas. Means rushed forward dropping Salas with a big left hand followed by some ground and pound. Salas made it back to his feet where he was met with a right hand that dropped him. A combination of astonishingly bad reffing and toughness, Salas made it back to his feet to eat a series of three Muay Thai clinch knees to the face, dropping him once against which was followed by some ground and pound that ultimately ended the fight.

This wasn’t the only bout that either had bad referees or bad judges for that matter. In two baffling decisions Mike Pierce who dominated Carlos Eduardo Rocha for three rounds easily winning the bout 30-27 all around; won the bout via split decision with one judge giving all three rounds to Rocha. Seth Baczynski also stole a win over Lance Benoist, winning a split decision that was likely a unanimous decision for Benoist. (Full UFC on FX 3 event results below.)

Aggression FC 9 emanated from the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. This was the second event produced by the promotion since the merger earlier this year. Undefeated Stephen Beaumont captured the Aggression FC Lightweight title with a unanimous decision victory over  Evan Sanguin.

Fists were flying as four of the nine bouts on the card ended with first round knockouts. Zach Blaber took 10-seconds to knockout Andrew Buckland. Tito Jones took 21-seconds to knockout Deven Jones. Nick Dragich took exactly half a round to pick up his TKO victory over Michael Swimmer, and KB Bhullar landed a huge punch to drop Ben Snyder at 2:46 of their bout.
