With only three title matches on the show, the Rumble match was once again the main attraction of the show. John Cena, Kane, Alberto Del Rio, Rey Mysterio, Sheamus, Big Show, were just a few of the competitors. As in past years, the Rumble featured surprise entrants as Booker T made his WWE return along with WWE Legend Diesel aka Kevin Nash.
Edge defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Dolph Ziggler starts off the DVD. With Edge’s ex-wife Vickie Guerrero in her boyfriend Ziggler’s corner it looked like Edge was going to get screwed out of his championship. Guerrero had been named the replacement general manager of Smackdown while Teddy Long recovered from an unknown attacker. While Edge and Guerrero have had little confrontations, this match-up was finally going to give fans the long awaited feud between the two.
Easily Edge and Ziggler had the match of the night, delivering a compelling battle inside and outside of the ring. A dramatic and shocking ending that does not necessarily end the rivalry quite yet. The Miz against Randy Orton for the WWE Championship was a different story.
For the second straight pay-per-view event, Orton challenged Miz for the title, but this time no table stipulation. Miz was out to prove to everyone that he is the greatest champion of all-time by defeating Orton and headlining WrestleMania. With his protégé Alex Riley constantly interfering in the contest, Orton is basically battling a handicap match. The arrival of the new Nexus at the end of the match completely stacks the odds against Orton.
A surprise fatal four-way match for the WWE Diva’s Championship featured Natalya defending against Eve Torres, Michelle McCool and Layla. In the DVD exclusive extras, Eve gives her thoughts on the match and getting the opportunity when not even scheduled to compete. The other DVD extra is the victory celebration following Alberto Del Rio’s Rumble win on Monday Night RAW the next night.
For those that missed out on the start of the road to WrestleMania, the Royal Rumble event always delivers exciting and shocking over-the-top mayhem. John Morrison jumping on the barricade and then on to the ring steps to avoid elimination was one of the greatest moments in Rumble history. Thanks to all the surprises and explosive action, this Rumble will be remembered for a long long time.
