WWE 2011- The Big Show: A Giant’s World DVD Review

A three-disc set on the career of The Big Show: A Giant’s World by World Wrestling Entertainment is long-awaited. WWE documents his wrestling career starting in 1995 when he won the World Championship Wrestling heavyweight championship from Hulk Hogan in Show’s first match with WCW. While learning about Big Show’s fortunate break into professional wrestling is intriguing, The Big Show’s growing up as a large kid is even more amazing.

Known as ‘The World’s Largest Athlete,’ The Big Show Paul Wight stands over seven feet tall, dominating his opponents in the squared circle like former fighting champion Brock Lesnar and Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather.

At first, Show did not realize he had acromegaly; he thought he was just gifted and was able to eat a lot of food every day. Show had a promising basketball career that came to a tragic halt when his father passed away. His aunt, uncle, sister and friends give insightful impressions on his demeanour growing up with his handicap and dealing with his father’s passing. Show’s venture as a car salesman shortly afterwards is brief but important as that helped open the doors to WCW.

Show’s WCW career lasted over four years, and right away, due to his size and presence, he was made into one of the top stars in the company. With HHH, Terry Taylor and William Regal guiding him along, Show was main eventing pay-per-views in a few short months. However, Hogan only wanted to build Show into a star, so eventually, Hogan would come back and destroy Show.

In this period, Show displayed his extraordinaire athletic ability, such as a dropkick off the top, and a frog splash.

Show’s arrival in WWE also made a considerable impact, but many hardships followed. Show explains that becoming WWE champion less than a year in made him lazy. Show was sent to WWE’s development league for him to realize that star status can disappear very quickly. The Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin and HHH mentored him, hazed him for being fat, and gave him the fundamentals to be a complete wrestler instead of having a legend carry him through a match. Show’s run as the champion of WWE’s Extreme Championship Wrestling, his return to the ring to wrestle Mayweather, and his new training regime wrap up the documentary.

Fans who read the Rey Mysterio autobiography will get the same satisfaction from the Big Show DVD. Show has had an amazing career, although some major moments are skipped over or mentioned briefly. Nothing is mentioned about Kevin Nash nearly breaking his neck, no details are given for his absence following his ECW days. While a great variety of matches is shown on the second and third disc, WWE could easily come out with another disc set just on Show’s matches alone.

Regardless of how much more this DVD set could be, Show has had a phenomenal career, and you at least see a good portion of his many highlights for his nearly two-decade career. Although a bit mean, HHH’s roast of the Big Show is unbelievably funny as he describes how hilarious Show can get when he is angered over his weight issues.
