Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins closed night two with the longest match of the weekend at 33 minutes, and it never came close to that same energy. In between, WWE SummerSlam 2026 crowned two new champions, installed one new interim champion, and left one of the promotion’s most obvious future stars sitting at home.

CM Punk Retains, But Randy Orton Wrote the Real Ending
The best match of the weekend happened on night one. CM Punk and Cody Rhodes worked with a level of tension the rest of the card never matched, trading real heat instead of choreography.
Punk retained the WWE Championship on night two, but not clean. Randy Orton returned and hit Cody with an RKO before Punk delivered the GTS for the pin, meaning the champion has not actually beaten Cody Rhodes in a fair fight yet. That sets up an obvious rematch, and it puts Kevin Owens next in line after his fatal four-way win, a matchup loaded with real history between the two men. That storyline has been building since our breakdown of CM Punk’s comments about wrestling being always business, and Friday’s SmackDown in Philadelphia should pick up right where SummerSlam left off.
It also completes a stacked SmackDown roster. Cody, Randy, Sami, Kevin, Finn Balor and Gunther are all former champions sharing the same brand as CM Punk, which is the deepest a WWE main event scene has looked in years, assuming the writers actually use it. Chelsea Green Finally Gets Her Moment
The loudest reaction of either night belonged to Chelsea Green. She survived a chaotic five-way ladder match to become the interim WWE Women’s Champion, a title that only exists because Rhea Ripley’s injury forced WWE’s hand a few weeks ago.
Green has been one of the most consistently entertaining performers on the roster for years without a singles title to show for it. Watching her finally get that moment, with the crowd fully behind her, was the single best storytelling beat of WWE SummerSlam 2026.
It also sets up a real question. When Rhea Ripley returns as the planned top babyface, does Chelsea Green get pushed into a heel run against her, or does the crowd’s affection for Green force WWE into a different direction? Either way, a formerly overlooked act just became appointment television.
Baron Corbin’s US Title Win Is the Real Controversy of WWE SummerSlam 2026
Not every decision at WWE SummerSlam 2026 was defensible. Baron Corbin, back from a run that did not work the first time, beat Trick Williams clean for the United States Championship.
Corbin is 41. Williams is 32 and coming off the kind of momentum WWE spends years trying to manufacture. Handing a returning veteran a win at the direct expense of a rising star is the kind of shortsighted call that this card’s booking problems predicted before the show even happened.
It gets worse when you consider who was not booked at all. Bron Breakker did not appear on either night of WWE SummerSlam 2026, despite being positioned as one of WWE’s next core stars less than a year ago. Prioritizing a 41-year-old’s comeback over a 32-year-old’s push, while a genuine future star sits at home, sends the opposite message from the one WWE claims to want.
Across two nights that were supposed to be WWE’s second-biggest show of the year, only two titles actually changed hands: Chad Gable’s Intercontinental Championship win over Penta, and Corbin’s United States Championship win. One of those two decisions is questionable at best.

Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins Deliver a Match Built for No One
The night two main event ran 33 minutes, the longest match of the weekend, and it was also the most predictable finish of either card. Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins traded finishers back and forth in a heavily choreographed style that telegraphed every kickout before it happened.
The match ended with Reigns retaining the World Heavyweight Championship, then the two men posing together like old friends, which raises more questions than it answers about where Seth Rollins goes from here. A man who spent years as wrestling’s most vocal Bloodline opponent embracing Roman Reigns after a loss is a swerve that only works if WWE actually follows through on it.
Compare that to Gunther’s win over Nick Aldis on night one, a tighter, more physical style that told a complete story in under twelve minutes. WWE SummerSlam 2026 proved that longer does not automatically mean better.
The Undercard Told the Better Story
Gunther’s match with Nick Aldis was the best in-ring performance most fans were not expecting to enjoy. Aldis, wrestling in his first match back since being reinstated as SmackDown General Manager, looked like he belonged in the ring with WWE’s best pure technician, and the match earned a legitimate ovation.
Oba Femi’s win over Brock Lesnar inside Hell in a Cell closed night one, and it read as a torch-passing moment more than a retirement. Lesnar hugged Femi and called him the future on the mic afterward, which sounds like a beginning for Femi rather than an ending for Lesnar. Our look at Oba Femi’s credibility heading into SummerSlam argued this match needed to matter, and it delivered.
Chad Gable’s Intercontinental Championship win over Penta carried real emotional weight too, an established veteran finally landing his first singles title in his hometown in front of family. WWE undercutting that moment with a sponsor mascot walking out immediately afterward was the kind of self-inflicted tonal whiplash that keeps turning great wrestling into an afterthought.
What WWE SummerSlam 2026 Says About Triple H’s Creative Ceiling
Two nights, two 7.5-out-of-10 grades, and two actual title changes for what is supposed to be the second-biggest show on the WWE calendar. That is not a disaster. It is also not remotely ambitious.
WWE SummerSlam 2026 confirmed something that has been building since WrestleMania. This creative regime plays it safe. Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes are still feuding. CM Punk is still champion. The broad strokes of WWE’s biggest storylines have not moved much since April, even with a full slate of premium live events in between.
Running a wrestling company well and booking one creatively are two different skills, and WWE SummerSlam 2026 is more evidence that having one does not guarantee the other.
