16 May Weekend in Fights! May 12th-15th Edition
This Weekend in Fights! (May 12-15) is a very special weekend that is extended to Tuesday with the UFC holding their third event of FUEL TV midweek in Virginia. Friday’s events included Bellator in New Jersey and Legacy Fighting Championship in Texas. Saturday’s events included Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki in Poland and Pure MMA in Pennsylvania.
As always, Bellator kicked off the weekend with Bellator 68 in Atlantic City, New Jersey at the Palladium Ballroom of Caesars Atlantic City and broadcast on MTV2 and Spike.com. The event featured the finals of the Bellator Season 6 Featherweight tournament, and one half of the Bantamweight semifinals. In the Featherweight finals Daniel Straus seemingly submitted Marlon Sandro, but he was saved by the bell, but not from the judges. Straus took advantage of the hesitant Sandro, fighting off his submission attempts and landing more crisp strikes and controlled the bout. Straus picks up a $100,000 and a shot at current Bellator Featherweight champion Pat Curran.
In the Bantamweight semifinals, Marcos Galvao edged out Travis Marx for the unanimous decision victory. Galvao used his superior striking and takedown defense to stuff Marx’ attmpts to gain control. Galvao will face the winner of the Luis Nogueira vs. Hiroshi Nakamura later this year.
Prolific knockout artist Marius Zaromskis was on his was to losing a three round decision Waachiim Spiritwolf, but due to a nasty cut cause my Zaromskis in the first round the action was force to end after the second round, as Spiritwolf was not clearly to continue. Legacy Fighting Championship continued Friday nights action with their 11th event airing on HDNet at Arena Theater in Houston, Texas. The event had former WEC Lightweight Jamie Varner to take on Lee King, but due to Varner signing with the UFC he was replaced by undefeated fighter Evan Cutts, who continued that streak with a second round triangle choke submission over King. In the main event Clay Hantz replaced the injured Jesus Rivera on short notice to take on Jorge Patino for the vacant LFC Lightweight championship now that simultaneous LFC Lightweight and Featherweight champion Daniel Pineda signed with the UFC. Although stepping in last minute wasn’t a pre-fight problem for Hantz, he was knocked out in 64-seconds by Patino. Patino is now the new Legacy Fighting Championship Lightweight champion. Bellator veteran Chad Robichaux snapped his two fight losing skid with submission over two-time UFC veteran Joseph Sandoval in 50-seconds. After going 3-1 in the UFC including a knockout of the night honors, Gerald Harris who was surprisingly cut by the promotion picked up his fourth consecutive victory with a split decision over Mike Bronzoulis. KSW 19 took place at the Atlas Arena in Lodz, Poland former World’s Strongest Man Mariusz Pudziannowski defeated Bob Sapp in the main event. The bout only lasted 39-second Pudziannowski rained down punches on Sapp. Sapp didn’t throw one punch, nor did he attempt to make it a fight, as it was evident that he showed up simply to collect a pay check. Unsigned European phenom Mamed Khalidov knocked out UFC veteran Rodney Wallace in under two minutes of the very first round. UFC & Bellator veteran Jay Silva lost a majority decision to Michal Materia. While UFC, Bellator, Shark Fights, IFL, and BAMMA veteran snapped a four fight losing skid Matt Horwich with a third round TKO of Antoni Chmielewski. (Full KSW 19 event results below.)
Pure MMA took place at the Sports Dome in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the event was headlined by MMA journeyman Din Thomas, who had two stints in the UFC. Since being cut in 2008, Thomas has gone on the fight in local promotions, and picked up his fourth consecutive victory and the Pure MMA Featherweight title with a first round arm bar submission over Cody Bollinger. Another championship bout took place on the card as Pete Martin defeated Michael Byrnes. Oddly enough in a three round decision for the Pure MMALightweight title, which is odd for a title bout. Also on the card were UFC veterans Waylon Lowe & Jason Dent. Lowe picked up his third KO/TKO when the referee was forced to call a halt to the action in the third round over Mike Diggs. After going 1-1 in the UFC, Dent has yet to recover from his UFC 106 loss to George Sotiropoulos, as he continues his losing ways, added a fourth consecutive loss to his record with a unanimous decision loss to Rustam Khabilov. (Full Pure MMA event results below.)
UFC on FUEL TV 3 took place at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia on Tuesday night. The 11 bout card was headlined with the Featherweight title eliminator bout between Dustin Poirier and the Korean Zombie Chan Sung Jung. Jung displayed an extremely evolved MMA game, with a combination of ground work and crisp striking. Both fighters went toe-to-toe for 16 minutes, as Jung scored a fourth round D’Arce choke submission choking Poirier out cold. Jung who was primarily a striker in previous bouts, took Poirier to the ground early, delivering both ground and pound strikes and submission attempts. Poirier was outclassed both on the ground and standing, as he was unable to fight off the persistent Jung throughout the highly contested three rounds.
In the only knockout of the card, Tom Lawlor, who was celebrating his birthday knocked out Jason MacDonald in 50-seconds.
Although he was getting manhandled by Marcus LeVesseur; Cody McKenzie, who was sporting a new look, pulled off his trademark guillotine submission for a first round victory.
Tristar’s Yves Jabouin picked up the third straight victory in the UFC as a Bantamweight when he won a clear cut unanimous decision over Jeff Hougland. Jabouin used a variety of spin kicks to drop Hougland early in the first round, but was unable to finish him off with ground and pound. Jabouin continued his assault throughout the next two rounds, with a combination a kicks, and ground and pound.
Nova Scotia’s TJ Grant won his second fight since dropping to Lightweight, with a unanimous decision victory over Carlo Prater. Doing some training over a Nova Uniao, Grant showed off his much improved ground work over the Brazilian fighter with ground control and submission attempts.
Very good fight card with most of the bouts going the distance, but entertaining in the process. Donald Cerrone kickboxed his was to defeating boxer Jeremy Stephens, who could never find his range. Igor Prokrajac and Fabio Maldonado had one hell of a slugfest over, that seemingly saw Prokrajac the winner. Finally the opening bout of the card saw Francisco Rivera beat up a very tough Alex Soto with kicks and punches. (Full UFC on FUEL TV 3 event results below.)
