Weekend in Fights! March 10th Edition – Ringside Report + Wrestling Uncensored

This Weekend in Fights! (March 10th) featured the return of Bellator with their 6th Season, that included the opening round of the new Featherweight tournament, as well as the Featherweight championship match between champion Joe Warren and Season 5 tournament winner Pat Curran. Ken Pavia’s Super Fight League in India premiered their inaugural show with James Thompson and Bob Sapp in the main event. King of the Cage held two events this weekend, one in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the other in Edmonton, Alberta, and former UFC Lightweight competitor Rob Emerson picked up a win at Tachi Palace Fights. Mirko Cro Cop returned to kickboxing, and although not “official” fights, 16 bouts took place on the premiere  of The Ultimate Fighter Season 15 Friday night, one of which included former Ringside MMA Lightweight champion Daron Cruickshank. On Friday Bellator 60 took place at The Venue at Horseshoe Hammond, in  Hammond, Indiana and a new champion was crowned. Pat Curran dismantled Joe Warren in a very one-sided beat down that ended in the third round. Curran rocked Warren early in the first round with  knees, but Warren was able to regain his composure in the second. In the third, Curran cornered Warren against the cage and just unleashed with a relentless barrage of punch and knee combinations  that had Warren out on his feet. Curran is now the new Bellator Featherweight champion. His next challenge is to be determined with the conclusion of the new Featherweight tournament that started on the same card. Alexandre Bezerra and Marlon Sandro picked up rear-naked choke submission victories in their quarter final match ups. Bezerra defeated Kenny Foster with only three seconds left in the second round, and Sandro made short work of Roberto Vargas in the first round. Mike Corey upset Ronnie Mann in a three round war, to advance to the semi finals. Daniel Straus advanced as well with a decision over previously undefeated Jeremy Spoon. Former UFC Heavyweight Sean McCorkle made quick work of (Big Dick) Richard White with a neck crank in 1:02 of the first round; McCorkle is now riding a six fight win streak since being cut from the UFC. Also on Friday, former UFC Lightweight Rob Emerson (12-10) took on  Savant Young (10-9) in the co-main event of Tachi Palace Fights 12 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino, in Lemoore, Califormia. Emerson picked up the win with a rear naked choke submission late in the third round, with the victory Emerson is 3-1 since being cut from the UFC after losing to Nik Lentz in March of 2010. On Saturday Super Fight League held their premiere event at the Andheri Sports Complex, in Mumbai, India. The card was headlined with a Super Heavyweight bout between Bob Sapp (11-11) and James Thompson (17-14). Thompson would have an early night as Sapp submitted due to a leg injury in under two minutes. The card also featured another Super Heavyweight bout as Jimmy Ambriz (16-18) knocked out Satish Jamia in just 14 seconds. Former UFC Light Heavyweight Xavier Foupa-Pokam (22-17) picked up a TKO victory over Joey Guel, when the doctor refused to allow Guel to continue into the second round. (Full SFL 1 event results below.)
King of the Cage Breakthrough took place at the River Spirit Event Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday night. The event was headlined by former UFC Light Heavyweight David Heath (16-7) versus Sidiah Parker. Heath destroyed Parker in the second round by TKO. (Full KOTC – Breakthrough event results below.)
Just four weeks after picking up a first round submission victory over Elliot Duff at Aggression MMA 9 on February 11th, Canadian submission specialist Luke Harris (8-1) was back at it on Saturday night at the Mirage Banquet Hall, Edmonton, Alberta, for King of the Cage Canada – Infamy. Harris picked up another first round submission victory over Brandon MacArthur (6-19) with an arm bar late in the round. (Full KOTC-Infamy event results below.)
The legendary Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic retired from MMA in November 2011, after losing to Roy Nelson at UFC 137, but he didn’t retire from kickboxing. Cro Cop returned to his  kickboxing roots for the first time since 2003, in a final farewell bout in his home country of Croatia. The event was dubbed: “K-1 Cro Cop Final Fight” where he (Filipovic) took on another kickboxing legend, Ray Sefo. Filipovic defeated Sefo by unanimous decision, retiring with his head held high. He retires with a 17-7 Kickboxing and 27-10 MMA records.  (Full K-1: Cro Cop Final Fight event results below.)
