Weekend in Fights! June 16th Edition

This Father’s Day Weekend in Fights! (June 16th, 2012) may not have featured any events from the UFC, Bellator, Strikeforce or any other major promotion, but featured many UFC veterans on local cards across the United States. Some of the veterans fighting this weekend included Tim Sylvia, Jorge Santiago, Karo Parisyan, John Gunderson, Drew Fickett, Kendall Grove, Derek Brunson, Lyle Beerbohm, Marcus Aurelio, Charles Bennett, Roli Delgado and many more.
Titan Fighting Championship started our weekend on Friday night, with TFC 23 “Fight for the Troops” in Fort Riley, Kansas, and airing on HDNet. Headlining the event was former Sengoku Middleweight champion and UFC veteran Jorge Santiago was originally set to face UFC and Bellator veteran Jay Silva, but for reasons unknown, Silva was pulled from the fight. Santiago was pitted  against the virtually Justin Guthrie, in a very lopsided bout that saw Santiago submit his opponent with an inverted heel hook in 94-seconds. Santiago snapped Guthrie’s four fight win streak, while improving his win streak to two at TFC since dropping two in the UFC and being released. Post fight Santiago hinted at a possible drop to Welterweight. (Full TFC 23 – Fight for the Troops event results below.)
New England Fights “FIGHT NIGHT III” kicked off their inaugural event at  the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine on Saturday night. Headlining the event was none other than the “Maine-iac” Tim Sylvia making his Maine debut. The former 2-time UFC Heavyweight champion was as Sylvia was in the cage for 12-seconds. Storming in quickly, Sylvia dropped Randy Smith with a right hand to the body and continued with a flurry of strikes that forced the referee to stop the bout. Sylvia was anxious to get back home to Iowa to spend Father’s Day with his 17-month-old son Maverick. Now improving to 31-7 Sylvia hopes to get another shot in the UFC. 16 more fights both pro and amateur rounded up the card with local fighters with lots of quick finishes. Also on Saturday night, ShoFIGHT debuted their first ever professional fight card with ShoFIGHT 20. Emanating form other Springfield, at the O’Reilly Family Event Center in Missouri. The ShoFIGHT 20 card was injury filled yet still featured a stacked card of UFC, STRIKEFORCE, Bellator, Pride and WEC veterans, and crowned two inaugural champions. Guest of Ringside Report Radio and Lightweight fighter John Gunderson captured the ShoFIGHT Welterweight title by submitting Karo Parisyan midway through the first round. Parisyan took Gunderson down early, but he was able to get back to his feet and connect with a devastating left knee. A little rocked and desperate, Parisyan shot in for another takedown where he was met with a guillotine choke that ultimately ended the bout.
Kendall Grove defeated last minute replacement Derek Brunson in a three round catchweight bout for the  ShoFIGHT Middleweight title. Brunson who took the fight on four days notice dominated Grove with his wrestling, but was unable to improve position, while Grove worked his ground offense from guard. Grove picked up a baffling split decision victory and the title delivering Brunson his first ever defeat.
Lyle Beerbohm worked his was to a victory over Marcus Aurelio with takedowns and ground and pound. Beerbohm bloodied up Aurelio midway through the fight and just continued to the end picking up the unanimous decision. Jonatas Novaes knocked out Drew Fickett in 51-seconds. This first round  knockout marks Fickett’s fifth in his last six bouts. Shonie Carter was slated to fight on the card but was unable to because he was hit by a car.
