This Weekend in Fights! (August 4th, 2012) featured The UFC’s return to FOX television with UFC on FOX 4, Xtreme Fighting Championship 19 in Charlotte, CES MMA 12 in Rhode Island, and Flawless Fighting Championship in Chicago.
Xtreme Fighting Championships or XFC kicked off the weekend on Friday with XFC 19: Charlotte Showdown at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.With multiple changes to the main event with fighters dropping out, Nicolae Cury faced Roger Carroll on one days notice. Cury edged out Carroll in very close decision that appeared to lean towards the hometown favorite Carroll. However the judges saw the bout for Cury, who stopped Carroll from winning like his brother Joey earlier on the card.
Felice Herrig continued her 2012 undefeated streak with a unanimous decision over Simona Soukupova in the co-main event of the evening. With a lot of clinching in the first round, Herrig displayed her striking skills in the second and third frame to earn the judges nod.
Congenital amputee with just one fully-formed arm, Nick Newell continues to remain undefeated with yet another dominating performance against David Mays. Newell knocked out Mays with a series of knees two minutes into their bout. At 8-0 Newell may face XFC Lightweight champion Eric Reynolds. (Full XFC 19: Charlotte Showdown event results below.)
Classic Entertainment & Sports or CES MMA held their 12th event titled Far Beyond Driven at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island on Friday. In the main event, UFC vet John Howard defeated Scott Rehm in under 90-seconds after Rehm injured his arm. WCF and WEC vet Mike Campbell picked up a unanimous decision victory over STRIKEFORCE and Bellator veteran Don Carlo-Clauss in the co-main event. UFC on FOX 4 emanated from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on Saturday night. The double main event of the card featured two potential Light Heavyweight title eliminator bouts, with former champions Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Lyoto Machida in action. Rua faced Brandon Vera, while Machida faced Ryan Bader, in a “Who ever wins most impressively gets a title shot.”  stipulation to their bouts. With the pressure on, both Rua and Machida refused to go to the judges decision by finishing their bouts. Rua had a back-and-forth battle with Vera, where he uncharacteristically utilized wrestling to score points throughout the fight. Both fighters took some vicious strikes, but in the end Rua would drop Vera and rain punches down forcing the referee to call the action in the last minute of the fourth round. Lyoto Machida had a easier night than Rua when he knocked out Ryan Bader 92-seconds into the second round. Machida used his classic counter striking style to catch Bader rushing in. As Bader stepped forward he ran into Machida’s fist knocking him out cold. With the more impressive victory of the two bouts, Lyoto Machida, who hinted at a potential drop to the Middleweight division, has been granted a title shot to the winner of champion Jon Jones versus Dan Henderson which takes place on September 1st at UFC 151.
In one of the fights of the night Joe Lauzon defeated last minute replacement fighter Jamie Varner. Lauzon spoiled Varner’s second UFC bout with a beautiful triangle choke submission. The action was very back-and-forth between the two fighters, but Lauzon who was tagged multiple times was able to submit a visibly exhausted Varner for the win.
Mike Swick returned to the UFC after 29-month layoff to face fellow Welterweight DaMarques Johnson. Swick ended the bout with a second round  knockout making his return a successful one. (Full UFC on FOX 4 event results below.)
Flawless Fighting Championship held their first event in Chicago, Illinois. In the main event Egidijus Valavicius made short work of  Eric Hammerich with an arm bar 58-seconds into the bout. The card featured UFC veteran Jake O’Brien who defeated  Miodrag Perkovic in a three rounder. The card was suppose to feature Bellator, WEC, and Dream  veteran Chase Beebe, and TUF Alumni, UFC, STRIKEFORCE, Bellator and M-1 veteran Shamar Bailey, but their bouts never took place.
