20 Aug Weekend in Fights! August 18th Edition
This Weekend in Fights! (August 18th, 2012) featured to much anticipated STRIKEFORCE Women’s Bantamweight championship bout between champion Ronda Rousey and Sarah Kaufman. As well as, Legacy Fighting Championship 13 in Texas, Xtreme Fighting Organization 45 in Illinois, MEZ Sports in California, Deep in Tokyo, Japan, and Xtreme Combat Promotions’ event in Middlebury, Vermont.
Legacy Fighting Championship kicked off the weekend with their 13th event emanating from the Dallas Covention Center in Dallas, Texas with the bouts airing on AXS TV. In the main event, Derrick Lewis scored a second TKO of Jared Rosholt to capture the vacant Legacy Fighting Championship Heavyweight Title. Rosholt controlled the majority of the action with his wrestling game plan. With little action multiple times the referee was forced to stand them up often. During one of those moments Lewis capitalized by connecting with a right hand hand, which allowed him to unleash a flurry of strikes dropping Rosholt. Lewis improves his win streak to 4, while handing Rosholt his first career loss.
Ultimate Fighter 15 alumni Chris Tickle picked up his first victory outside the UFC. Tickle made short work of Douglas Frey with a 63-second TKO. Tickle bounced Frey’s head off the mat multiple times with a combo of punches and elbows. (Full Legacy FC 13 event results below.)
Saturday afternoon Xtreme Fighting Organization (XFO) held their 45th event and their eighth outdoor event at the Sideouts Bar and Eatery in Island Lake, Illinois. UFC, STRIKEFORCE, Bellator, WEC veteran and XFO main stay Jeff Curran was slated to headline the card against Dustin Ortiz, however the bout was scrapped for undisclosed reasons. The outdoor card featured four professional bouts and 11 amateur bouts. The main event of the afternoon was UFC and WEC veteran Mackens Semerzier versus Guillermo Serment. Semerzier made short work on Serment with a 62-second d’arce choke submission to end the event, picking up his first win since being released from the UFC in March of this year. On Saturday night STRIKEFORCE held the most important bout of the entire weekend with a STRIKEFORCE women’s Bantamweight title bout between Champion Ronda Rousey and Sarah Kaufman at the Valley View Casino Center in San Deigo, California on Saturday night. It took Rousey 54-seconds to defeat Kaufman with her signature arm bar submission. Rousey rushed Kaufman up against the cage, took her to the mat and slapped on the submission. Kaufman did her best to defend the arm bar by grasping her bicep, but once the arm was extended the bout was of over. Rousey remains undefeated at 6-0 with six first round arm bar submissions, and has called out Christiane Cyborg Santos.
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza may have earned himself a Middleweight title shot by picking up his first ever knockout victory. Souza only took 41-seconds to put away Derek Brunson with a counter right hand that sent Brunson stumbling to the mat. Brunson attempted to get get back up but the damage was done, and Souza added a few more strikes to force the referee to intervene.
Another wicked knockout of night was Ovince St. Preux versus T.J. Cook. Both fighters went back-and-forth with devastating strikes throughout the first two frames. St. Preux appeared to have Cook put away in the first, but Cook fired back almost drop St. Preux himself. At the opening on the third and final frame St. Preux walked right up to Cook and knocked him out with a one-punch left hook at 20-seconds into the round.
In other Women’s MMA bout of the evening, Meisha Tate and Julie Kedzie squared off. Kedzie dominated Tate throughout the first two rounds. It appeared that Tate was thrown off guard by the very game Kedzie, who beat her up in the stand up portion. Tate did attempt two rear-naked chokes that Kedzie was able to escape and dominate in the stand up. In the third round Tate was able to slap on an arm bar, and although Kedzie fought hard, eventually she would tap. (Full STRIKEFORCE: Rousey vs. Kaufman event results below.)
