10 Apr Weekend in Fights! April 7th Edition – Ringside Report + Wrestling Uncensored

This Weekend in Fights! (April 7th) was a slow week for MMA. Most likely due to it being Easter & Passover, the MMA scene was quite. With this being the final week of absence for the UFC, only two major promotions, Bellator and the Super Fight League held events; with no a local promotions holding any bouts of note.
Bellator 64 to place at Caesars Windsor in Windsor, Ontario on Friday night. Bellator made their first trip to their second Canadian city. The card featured the Bellator Welterweight championship match, with champion Ben Askren squaring off against Season 5 Welterweight tournament winner Douglas Lima. Askren fought a hard, yet dominant bout against Lima, winning all five rounds 10-9, for the unanimous decision victory for his second title defense. Askren now awaits the conclusion of Season 6 Welterweight tournament winner, as the semifinals are set to take place on May 4th at Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario with Ben Saunders taking on Bryan Baker, while Karl Amoussou will take on David Rickels.
The first semifinal fight of the Bellator Season 6 Featherweight Tournament, was a battle of fellow countryman as Brazilian fighters Marlon Sandro and Alexandre “Popo” Bezerra squared off to determine the first finalist. Sandro was awarded the bout because of his performance in the first two rounds. The third round saw a much more aggressive Bezerra forcing Sandro to back peddle throughout the round. However, for Bezerra  it was too little too late, even with the impressive third round, the judges gave the split decision bout to Sandro.
Bellator also had kicked off their Bantanweight tournament, with Travis Marx and Hiroshi Nakamura became the first two to advance to the semifinal round in the first leg. Both fighters won their bouts via unanimous decision, with Marx defeating Masakatsu Ueda and Hiroshi Nakamura defeating previously undefeated Rodigo Lima.
On the undercard, two Canadian fighters were in action, as Team Tompkins’ Chris Horodecki suffered a devastating first round knockout at the hands of Mike Richman. Tristar/Zahabi MMA prospect Nordine Taleb put a serious beat down on Matt Secor in his Bellator debut. Taleb won the bout with a unanimous decision in impressive fashion with two judges scoring the 30-27, and one judge scoring the bout 30-24, giving Taleb three 10-8 rounds. Streaming live on YouTube, India based Super Fight League held their second event in T-Box Mobile Arena in Chandigarh, India on Saturday. The event was headlined by Todd Duffee and Neil Grove. Once highly touted prospect in the UFC Heavyweight division, Todd Duffee, who went 1-1 with the promotion picked up a victory for the first time in three years, and for the first time since being dropped from the company. Duffee who hand made his UFC debut in impressive fashion, knocked out Tim Hague in August of 2009. Following a knockout loss to Mike Russow, Duffee was released, and found himself in DREAM taking on Alistair Overeem, in December of 2010, in a losing effort to capture the DREAM Heavyweight title. Now training at American Kickboxing Academy, Duffee picked up a quick 34 second TKO victory over UFC and Bellator veteran Neil Grove; who is now riding a three fight losing skid.
Bellator Season 2 and 5 Middleweight tournament winner, Alexander Shlemenko remains  active outside of the promotion while awaiting his next title shot, against Bellator Middleweight champion Hector Lombard. Shlemenko took on Japanese superstar Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa, in a very short fight. Connecting with a knee and punches to the body, Shlemenko sent Minowaman down  to the mat to pick up  a TKO victory midway through the first round.
In the opening bout of the card Ryan Healy bounced back from his March 16th loss to John Alessio for the Score Fighting Series, with a win over UFC veteran Paul Kelly. This bout being Kelly’s first bout since being released from the UFC back in February of 2011, after losing to Donald Cerrone at UFC 126. Healy used a ground based game plan to pick up the unanimous decision victory. (Full SFL 2 event results below.)
