30 Jan TUF 17: Episode 2 notes and results
Episode 2. January 29, 2013- The fighters enter the TUF house and are generally impressed with their surroundings.
Josh Samman (Team Jones) doesn’t think Gilbert Smith (5-1, Team Jones) versus Luke Barnatt (5-0, Team Sonnen) was a good first pick from Team Jones. Samman says Smith’s cardio is not up to par. Smith v. Barnatt will take place on this episode in the first TUF 17 MW Tournament Final 14 bout.
Team Jones is shown training. Former UFC HW champion Frank Mir is one of the coaches for Team Jones. The coaches are concerned about Gilbert Smith’s chances in the fight. Assistant coach John Wood expresses his doubt about Smith.
Gilbert Smith asks his team why he was picked to fight first and says he is disappointed with his teammates and coaches lack of faith in him. Smith cries in the backyard over a flag signed by his friends and family. Smith’s teammates question whether he is ready for his fight.
Team Sonnen is shown training. UFC LHW and BJJ black belt Vinny Magalhaes is one of the coaches. Mike Dolce is also a Team Sonnen coach.
Bubba McDaniel (Team Jones) tells Frank Mir that he is worried about losing the fight for Team Jones and losing the control of the next fight selection. Smith’s teammates confront him in the locker room and he says he is going to fight his best. Jon Jones is listening at the door and enters the room after a while. Jones tells Smith to accomplish his goal and not let others get in his head.
Clint Hester (Team Jones) says he has confidence in Smith to beat Barnatt. Adam Cella (Team Jones) also says he thinks Smith will win.
Chael Sonnen and his coaches arrive at the TUF house for dinner with his team. Chael Sonnen says tells Uriah Hall (Team Sonnen) he wants him to move into the next round because of his exceptional skill. Hall tells Sonnen that he is ready to fight the best on the other team right away. Sonnen is impressed and they shake hands.
Chael Sonnen has Luke Barnatt has great heart and conditioning.
Dana White questions Jon Jones picking Gilbert Smith to fight Luke Barnatt because of Barnatt’s extreme height advantage.
Luke Barnatt tells his team he plans to take Smith down and land elbows. Barnatt says he fights to finish not just to win. Gilbert Smith says he is ready to die in the cage.
Luke Barnatt (5-0, Team Sonnen) versus Gilbert Smith (5-1, Team Jones)- TUF 17 MW Tournament-Final 14
Round 1- Barnatt throws a kick that lands low in the first 20 seconds of the fight but action quickly resumes. Smith shoots against the cage for a single-leg takedown and is able to score after some defense from Barnatt. Barnatt is able to get back to his feet quickly and score a takedown of his own. Smith gets to his feet and pushes Barnatt against the fence. Barnatt scores some knees in a Muay-Thai clinch but is taken down again. Barnatt gets to his feet and looks for a takedown but Smith defends and they continue to clinch against the cage. Barnatt lands a takedown but is unable to keep him down. Smith shoots in for a takedown but Barnatt defends and lands on top. Barnatt lands some punches but Smith gets back to his feet and pushes Barnatt into the cage. Barnatt pushes away and lands a jab but Smith fires back with a leg kick. Smith pushes Barnatt into the fence and tries to get the single-leg takedown but Barnatt defends and pushes away as the round comes to an end. I would score Round 1 for Luke Barnatt: 10-9
Round 2- The fighters exchange a punch each and Smith pushes Barnatt into the fence again in search of a single-leg takedown. Barnatt defends and lands on top. Barnatt is able to score an elbow but Smith gets back to his feet and continues to work for a single-leg takedown. Barnatt attempts to roll into a kimura but Smith escapes and lands in Barnatt’s guard. Barnatt is able to get to his feet and land a trip takedown. Barnatt lands an elbow from half-guard but struggles to keep Smith on his back. Smith gets to his feet and lands some good punches before again clinching against the fence. Barnatt lands a knee to the body but Smith pushes in with punches to the body. Smith moves in for a takedown and gets blasted with a flying knee that knocks him unconscious.
Luke Barnatt def. Gilbert Smith via KO (knee) at 3:14 in Round 2 to advance to TUF 17 MW Tournament Quarter-Finals
Dana White tells people after the fight that it was a bad match-up and that Jon Jones had made it.
Bubba McDaniel (Team Jones) challenges Kevin Casey (Team Sonnen) after the fight. Casey says that he feels disrespected by McDaniel.
Gilbert Smith is crying and disappointed after the loss. Jon Jones tells his team that he hates losing and wanted to set a standard of excellence throughout the season. Jones says he did not want to lose any fight and his team should be pissed off.
Chael Sonnen selects Uriah Hall (7-2, Team Sonnen) to fight Adam Cella (4-0, Team Jones) to fight in the next TUF 17 MW Tournament Final 14 bout.
