11 Nov TUF 16: Episode 8 notes and results – Ringside Report + Wrestling Uncensored
Episode 8- November 3, 2012- Dana White is unimpressed with the quality of the Michael Hill- Matt Secor fight and the overall quality of the fights this season. White says the season is almost an “embarrassment.”
Roy Nelson tells Matt Secor (Team Carwin) that he won the fight. Nelson tells him not to listen to Dana White about the quality of the fight. Nelson stresses the importance of winning over entertaining.
Dana White arrives at The Ultimate Fighter house and talks to the fighters about the lack of finishes in the fights. White says that only one guy wins the show and being entertaining is a way to get into the UFC. White tells Michael Hill that he did not win his fight. White says none of the other fighters will get to fight in the finale.
Mike Ricci tells the fighters not to fight smart and not stupid because Dana White tells them to be more entertaining. Michael Hill and Julian Lane start to drink heavily.
Michael Hill drunkenly tells Neil Magny that they will fight in the quarter-finals. Magny questions Hill how he plans on beating him. Hill wants to fight him immediately but is stopped. Julian Lane is also drunk and decides he wants to fight Dom Waters. Lane tries to fight Waters and they have to be separated. Julian Lane says he is ready to go home and smashes his head against the wall. Lane has to be restrained by several men and goes on a rampage in the house looking for Dom Waters. Julian Lane tells Michael Hill to “let me bang,” repeatedly and begins to cry and hugs Hill.
Mike Ricci says guys like Julian Lane make him ashamed to be part of the sport. Lane punches the wall several times.
Dom Waters avoids Julian Lane while Lane tries to find him while being restrained. Lane is out of control.
The next day, a sobered Julian Lane says: “I kind of feel like a jackass.”
Roy Nelson selects Jon Manley (7-1, Team Nelson) to fight James Chaney (7-2, Team Carwin). Manley was selected 5th by Team Nelson, 10th overall in the draft. Chaney was selected 5th by Team Carwin, 9th overall in the draft.
Carwin says this will be a match-up between two “jiu-jitsu guys.”
Jon Manley is from Massachusetts. Roy Nelson says the game-plan will be to keep it standing until Chaney engages the grappling.
James Chaney is nicknamed “Snake.” He is from Oregon and lived in a trailer as a child and currently lives in a garage on a mattress. Chaney says he is very happy in the TUF house while others are missing their families. Shane Carwin says Chaney has made the biggest improvement while on TUF.
Dana White gathers Team Carwin and Team Nelson for the Coaches’ Challenge. The challenge will be track and field. Neither coach has any track and field experience. Dana says the winning coach will get $20,000 and each fighter on the winning team will get $1,500.
The events will be the javelin, the discus, the shot-put, the long jump, and the 400 meter run. White tells the coaches that every event they win, they get a 3-meter advantage in the run.
Shane Carwin wins the Shot Put event.

Carwin has a 12 meter advantage in the 400 meter race. Shane Carwin easily wins the race and destroys Roy Nelson in the Track-and-Field Coaches Challenge.
James Chaney (7-2, Team Carwin) v. Jon Manley (7-1, Team Nelson) TUF 16 Welterweight Tournament- Final 16
Round 1- Manley connects with a jab and a right hook but Chaney lands a right hand in a furiously paced first minute. The fighters clinch and Chaney jumps guard. Chaney goes for a triangle choke but Manley lifts him up and walks him into the fence. Chaney re-adjusts his triangle and pulls Manley back down to the mat. Manley tries to slowly escape while Chaney tries to hold on to the lock and find an opportunity to finish the choke. Manley throws some hammer-fists and manages to escape the position and work into a full-mount. Manley looks for a guillotine choke from the mount. Manley works for the choke and sinks it in to force the submission.
Jon Manley def. James Chaney via submission (guillotine choke) at 3:25 in Round 1 to advance to TUF 16 Welterweight Tournament Quarter-Finals
It appears that Chaney bit Jon Manley while in the submission. James Chaney admits to biting him out of desperation to escape the guillotine.
Mike Ricci (7-2, Team Carwin) will fight Dom Waters (4-1, Team Nelson) in the last Final 16 bout before the quarter-finals.
