TUF 16: Episode 7 notes and results

Episode 7- October 27, 2012- Roy Nelson told his team to pick numbers to see who will fight next. Dom Waters drew the winning number but asked Roy Nelson to pick his opponent. Nelson refused so Waters passed on his pick. Michael Hill instead gets to fight next for Team Nelson.
Roy Nelson selects Matt Secor (3-1, Team Carwin) to fight Michael Hill (4-0, Team Nelson). Hill was selected 2nd by Team Nelson, 4th overall in the draft while Matt Secor was selected 8th by Team Carwin, 15th overall.
Michael Hill says he picked to fight Matt Secor because he doesn’t like him. Secor calls Hill the “backstreet boy” of the house.
Forrest Griffin is shown training with Team Nelson. Griffin is guest coaching for Team Nelson.
Michael Hill is a personal trainer and nutritionist when he is not fighting.
Matt Secor is a member of the United States military. Secor’s brother was also in the military and died in Iraq. Secor has been training in jiu-jitsu for 4 years annd won the Pan-American games in blue and purple belt divisions. Secor’s father died a year ago, which he says he uses to motivate him.
Matt Secor (3-1, Team Carwin) v. Michael Hill (4-0, Team Nelson)- TUF 16 Welterweight Tournament Final 16
Round 1- Secor and Hill circle each other but land nothing in the first minute of the round. Secor lands a right hand but the fighters remain very apprehensive to engage in the first two minutes. Hill lands a takedown but Secor holds and controls him in half-guard. Hill throws short-punches to the body but Secor pushes him back into full-guard. Hill continued to land some punches to the body and head from inside Secor’s guard but did not score with anything significant. Hill defended a sweep-attempt by Secor but the fighters were stood up due to inactivity in the final 15 seconds of the round. Secor and Hill exchanged a punch each and Hill defended a takedown as the round came to a close. I would score Round 1 for Michael Hill: 10-9
Round 2- Secor landed a leg kick but Hill fired back with a counter-right hand early in the round. Hill defended a takedown attempt and managed to land on top of Secor in side-position. Secor rolled out of the position and was able to get to his feet and put Hill on his back. Secor improved his position from guard and took Hill’s back. Secor was able to bring one hook in as he attempted a rear-naked choke. Secor landed good elbows as he continued to try and squeeze in the choke. Hill defended the choke but Secor was able to put both hooks in and maintained positional control. Secor put Hill in a body-triangle as it became apparent that Hill was bleeding from his nose. Secor continued to control Hill from his back and landed punches while looking to secure the rear-naked choke. Secor was unable to grab hold of the neck and Hill survived the round. I would score Round 2 for Matt Secor: 10-9
The judges get it right and call it a draw after two rounds. We are going to a sudden-victory third round.
Round 3- Secor lands a counter-left hand a ducks a spinning back-fist into a takedown attempt. Hill defends the takedown attempt and lands in Secor’s guard after the scramble. Hill throws short hammer-fists from inside the guard. Secor looks for a submission from the guard and Hill gets to his feet to defend. Secor gets to his feet and lands the takedown to fall into Hill’s guard. Secor advances into half-guard and from half-guard into full-mount. Hill gives up his back and Secor secures a body-triangle to hold the position. Hill fights to get out of the position but Secor maintains excellent control to keep his back-mount. I would score Round 3 for Matt Secor: 10-9

Dana White says the Nevada State Athletic Commission should be embarrassed with their decision. Dana White clearly believes Matt Secor won Round 3.
Michael Hill says he doesn’t know if he did enough to win the fight. Matt Secor believes he won the fight.
Dana White tells the Team Carwin coaches that Matt Secor won rounds 2 and 3.
The judges in Nevada have been awful this season.
