Episode 3- September 28, 2012- Team Nelson is upset because they lost the last fight and no longer have control over the fight match-ups. Julian Lane (Team Nelson) wants to fight.
Colton Smith (Team Nelson) tells Matt Secor (Team Carwin) that he wants to fight him.
Nic Herron-Webb (Team Nelson) decides to play pool and whistle at night. Eddy Ellis (Team Carwin) and Mike Ricci (Team Carwin) tell him to stop. Mike Ricci says Herron-Webb is nervous because he doesn’t know if he will be chosen to fight.
Matt Secor (Team Nelson) says that no one from either team likes Nic Herron-Webb.
Shane Carwin chooses Joey Rivera (Team Nelson) to fight Sam Alvey (Team Carwin). Alvey was selected 1st by Team Carwin, 1st overall in the draft. Rivera was selected 7th by Team Nelson, 14th overall in the draft.
Dana White predicts Alvey to win the fight by devastating knockout.
Michael Hill (Team Nelson) complains to Nic Herron-Webb about making noise at night. Hill says he is not only disturbing Team Carwin but his team as well.
Joey Rivera is from Arizona where he lives and owns a gym. Rivera is shown training and sparring with Roy Nelson.
Sam Alvey trains with Team Quest in Temecula, California. Alvey is from Wisconsin and his fiancée won America’s Next Top Model. Alvey is shown training with Nate Marquardt and being coached by Trevor Wittman. Wittman says Alvey has unique striking ability.
Colton Smith, Nic Herron-Webb and Julian Lane from Team Nelson decide to take Sam Alvey’s mattress and put it in the pool. Igor Araujo (Team Carwin) is upset but Alvey takes it in stride.
Joey Rivera says he likes to have sex with his wife before his fights but not ejaculate to keep his “spiritual energy”.
Joey Rivera (7-1) v. Sam Alvey (18-4) (TUF 16 Welterweight Tournament-Final 16)
Round 1- Rivera lands a head kick, snaps a body kick and scores a takedown. Rivera takes his back but Alvey gets back to his feet. Rivera takes Alvey down again but Alvey gets back to his feet. Rivera hangs on to Alvey in a standing head-arm triangle choke attempt. Alvey escapes the hold and pushes Rivera into the fence with a body lock. Alvey looks for a takedown but falls into a guillotine by Rivera. Alvey gets back to his feet but Rivera jumps guard while continuing to work for a guillotine choke. Alvey escapes the choke and Alvey lands punches in Rivera’s guard. Rivera looks for a triangle choke but Alvey postures up and escapes. Alvey looks to land punches while standing and drops a heavy hammer-fist as time expires. I would score Round 1 for Joey Rivera: 10-9
Round 2- Rivera lands a head kick and a leg kick and lands a good uppercut in the first minute. Alvey pushes Rivera against the cage and looks for a takedown while Rivera tries to defend with a guillotine. After some inactivity, referee Herb Dean separates the fighters. Rivera attempts a takedown but Alvey reverses and clinches Rivera against the fence where they are again separated due to inactivity. Alvey lands a solid punch but Rivera fires back with a huge head-kick that stumbles Alvey. Rivera charges in and scores a takedown. Alvey gets back to his feet while being held by Rivera. Rivera pushes Alvey against the cage and takes punches to the head. Alvey reverses the position and takes Rivera down and lands on top of him as time expires. I would score Round 2 for Joey Rivera: 10-9.

Dana White says the fight did not go as he expected. Shane Carwin thinks Alvey may have been stunned with the fight in Rivera. Alvey says he thought he had won the fight.
