22 Nov TUF 16: Episode 10 notes and results
Episode 10- November 16, 2012- Mike Ricci says he doesn’t care if Michael Hill is upset that he picked him to fight in the quarter-finals. Ricci says the fighters are just numbers to him. Hill says Ricci is “a phony, he’s a fake.” Hil and Ricci had previously agreed not to fight until the finals as the only two Canadians in the house.
Bristol Marunde (15-7, Team Carwin) v. Neil Magny (7-1, Team Carwin) and Igor Araujo (22-6, Team Carwin) v. Colton Smith (3-1,Team Nelson) will be having their quarter-final bouts on this episode.
Marunde and Magny are both on Team Carwin but are training with different coaches and training partners on their team.
Neil Magny (7-1, Team Carwin) v. Bristol Marunde (15-7, Team Carwin)- TUF 16 Welterweight Tournament Quarter-Final
Round 1- Marunde connects with a straight right hand but Magny fires back with a solid leg kick and a jab. Marunde fires a leg kick back at Magny but eats a jab. Magny lands another jab as he circles out and out-boxes Marunde. Marunde shoots in and lands a takedown with 3 minutes remaining in the round. Magny gets back to his feet and lands two more jabs and a left hook. Magny slips when throwing a punch but recovers by throwing and landing an up-kick before getting to his feet. Marunde lands an uppercut but Magny scores again with the jab. Marunde pushes Magny against the fence but Magny defends the takedown and lands more punches. I would score Round 1 for Neil Magny: 10-9
Round 2- Marunde charges in with punches but cannot connect and Magny makes him pay with a knee to the body. Magny lands a solid body kick and a good right hand in the first minute of the round. Marunde lands a kick to the body but eats a jab and a hard right hand. Magny lands another straight right hand but Marunde catches a kick and takes him down. Marunde lands two big punches from Magny’s guard but cannot improve position and Magny is able to push away and get to his feet. Magny pushes Marunde against the fence but Marunde attempts a kimura and pulls Magny to the ground. Magny escapes the submission attempt and lands punches from the top position. Marunde is able to get to his feet and swings wildly with punches as time expires but cannot land anything. Magny lands another jab and pushes Marunde into the fence as the round comes to an end. I would score Round 2 for Neil Magny: 10-9

Colton Smith and Igor Araujo bump heads at the weigh-ins and Araujo tells Smith not to touch him. Smith tells him he’ll touch him tomorrow and Araujo pushes him. Shane Carwin gets in between them and Araujo appears to throw a knee at Carwin’s backside. The fighters are separated but are both very angry.
Colton Smith (3-1, Team Nelson) v. Igor Araujo (22-6, Team Carwin)- TUF 16 Welterweight Tournament Quarter-Finals
Round 1- Smith throws a body kick and Araujo charges in for a takedown. Smith reverses the position and takes Araujo down. Smith passes the guard into side-control and keeps Araujo down as he tries to sweep. Smith lands solid elbows and punches and continues to control Araujo as he tries to escape. Smith lands punches to the body and to the head as he continues to expertly keep Araujo grounded. Araujo manages to get to his feet but eats knees to the face by Smith. The fighters clinch against the fence and Smith lands another takedown. Smith lands punches and elbows from inside Araujo’s guard as time expires in the round. I would score Round 1 for Igor Aruajo: 10-9
Round 2- Smith lands jab and another takedown in the first 30 seconds of the round. Smith lands short elbows from half-guard and improves into side-control. Smith opens up with heavy punches and begins to do damage. Araujo cannot get out from under Smith and remains grounded. Araujo tries to roll out of the position but Smith demonstrates excellent wrestling and submission defense to stay on top. Smith lands solid knees to the body and hangs on as Araujo tries to escape. Smith sticks to Araujo like glue and hammers Araujo with punches as time expires. I would score Round 2 for Colton Smith: 10-9

Araujo and Smith make peace after the bout. Smith says it feels great to be in the final four.
