This Weekend in Fights! (January 26, 2013) featured Bellator’s second fightWIF Jan26 card on Spike TV, and the UFC’s sixth FOX card.

Thursday night Bellator 86 took place at the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. The card featured a Belltor Welterweight title bout between champion Ben Askren and season six tournament winner Karl Amoussou. The fourth a final Light Heavyweight opening round tournament bout, and all four opening round season eight Welterweight tournament opening round bouts.

Bellator Welterweight champion Ben Askren put a three round one-sided beatdown on Karl Amoussou to pick up his eighth Bellator victory. Askren took Amoussou down with ease and proceeded to pound Amoussou’s face in with punches and elbows. After three rounds the doctor’s refused to allow Amoussou to continue into the fourth as his eye was swollen shut. This marked Askren’s second TKO victory, his third title defense. Askren will now face off against season seven tournament winner, undefeated 13-0 Andrey Koreshkov at some point in 2013 in a battle of the undefeated’s.

As expected Muhammed Lawal won his Bellator debut in the fourth and final Light Heavyweight tournament quarterfinal matchup. Lawal used improved boxing technique to dismantle Przemyslaw Mysiala for a first round knockout. Lawal landed a huge overhand right that sent Mysiala crashing to the mat. Lawal didn’t pounce on Mysiala as he has been vocal in the past about bad stoppages and fighter safety. Lawal joins Jacob Noe, Emanuel Newton and Michail Zayats in the semifinals.

Douglas Lima, Ben Saunders, Brent Weedman, and Raul Amaya all punched their tickets into the semifinals of the Bellator season 8 Welterweight tournament. That statement couldn’t be anymore true for Amaya, who dropped Jose Gomes mid way through the the first round to earn a TKO victory. Douglas Lima “kicked” his way into the semifinals over Michail Tsarev by beating up his legs so bad that that he could hardly stand. Tsarev attempted to continue but the damage was done, as Lima saw his opening and exploited it. Ben Saunders picked up a unanimous decision over a very tough and game Koffi Adzitso. Saunders used takedown defense and Muay Thai to win all three rounds 30-27. Brent Weedman defeated Marius Zaromskis with a 29-27 unanimous decision. Weedman controlled the first two rounds, but was met with Zaromskis’ flashy striking in the third. Zaromskis was unable to finish the well rounded fighter in the third and was already down two rounds, thus giving Weedman the victory. (Full Bellator 86 event results below.)

UFC on FOX 6 emanated from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday night. The main event featured the first title defense of UFC Flyweight title as champion Demetrious Johnson took TUF 14 winner John Dodson. In a five round war Johnson picked up the unanimous decision to retain his title. In the first three rounds Dodson was landing some good shots dropping Johnson a few times, but it was still back and forth. As the bout entered the championship rounds Johnson really took over in dominant fashion. The fifth and finale round especially as Johnson utilized the Muay Thai clinch and beat up the very tough Dodson’s face. Johnson made his first successful title defense and improves to 3-0-1 as a Flyweight.

In the co-main event Glover Teixiera handed Quinton “Rampage” Jackson another loss and his walking papers, as this was the last fight on his contract, and he was extremely vocal about not re-signing. Jackson displayed moments of greatness with explosive or desperation flurries. Unfortunately for Jackson Teixiera out classed him on the feet on the ground and in wrestling over the course of three rounds. In victory Teixiera proved that he is a forced to e reckoned with the Light Heavyweight division, and that Jackson is clearly past his prime. The unanimous decision improves Teixiera’s record to 20-2 with and 18-fight win streak.

Ryan Bader set a UFC record with the quickest submission victory in the Light Heavyweight division when he forced Vladimir Matyushenko to tap to a guillotine choke in 50-seconds.

Four very impressive KO/TKO victories took place at UFC on FOX 6. Anthony Pettis picked up a quick first round liver kick TKO over Donald Cerrone. T.J. Grant uses elbows and punches to drop Matt Wiman with nine seconds remaining in the first round. Ricardo Lamas spoiled the title shot aspirations of Eric Koch with ground and pound elbows in the second round. And Shawn Jordan came back from a tough first round to drop Mike Russow for his first UFC victory.

Also on the card, Clay Guida had a successful Featherweight debut with a split decision over Hatsu Hioki. Pascal Krauss bounced back from his first career loss with a great standup display in a unanimous decision over Mike Stumpf. Rafael Natal submitted a very game Sean Spencer, and David Mitchell defeated Simeon Thoresen in a great opening contest. (Full UFC on FOX 6: Johnson vs. Dodson event results below.)
