UFC 124: St-Pierre v. Koscheck 2 DVD review – Ringside Report + Wrestling Uncensored

Georges St-Pierre broke Josh Kosheck’s right orbital bone after hard jabs for five straight rounds inside Montreal’s 23,000 plus packed Bell Centre at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s last event and fight of 2010.

UFC 124 occurred at the same time amateur wrestler and fighter Devon Hannibal Nicholson was choking out Total Nonstop Action star Tommy Dreamer in St-Leonard. For the UFC record setting attendance they got to leave their event satisfied with their hero coming out on top.

Koscheck disrespected GSP and French Canadians the last time he was fighting in Montreal and throughout the Ultimate Fighter season where GSP and Koscheck were coaches. On the first disc you get a chance to relive all the hype with the UFC 124 pre-show and on the second disc you get to see how GSP and Koscheck prepared mere days before the fight in the behind the scenes footage. You also get to see GSP and Koscheck when they arrived at the Bell Centre and GSP’s comments after the fight is over.

An awkward yet funny moment in the bonus footage is when Koscheck says how awkward it is being in the same elevator with GSP after they had their press conference. With GSP standing boldy in his dress suit with no emotion whatsoever on his face, Koscheck cannot help but laugh. Koscheck admits to the UFC cameras while he was hiding up in his Montreal hotel room that he was only insulting GSP and Canada in order for fans to want to buy the pay-per-view. However, Koscheck’s consistent teasing during the Ultimate Fighter season looked like it was really bugging GSP.

“His eye is FU##ED!” was yelled out by Koscheck’s corner only a few minutes into his fight. Koscheck believed he had an advantage if he stood up with GSP. The three-inch reach advantage GSP had and the explosive jabs he possesses were too much for Koscheck to stop. Throughout most of the 25-minute fight, GSP was able to land major punches right in Koscheck’s face even though Koscheck did his best to block them.

Credit to Koscheck for taking so many punches from GSP and Koscheck never once got knocked down because of his eye or because he got rocked. Koscheck was able to score a takedown on GSP to end the first round, but when it came to standing up Koscheck was completely dominated. GSP tried to finish the fight in the later rounds, but Koscheck was able to get up from GSP’s takedowns and he did not fall into any of GSP’s submission traps.

After the fight in the extras GSP is upset with himself for not ending the fight. GSP goes over strategy with his team on ways he could improve. GSP ends the behind the scenes segment by stating in a mocked fan’s voice that certain fans are going to think he is bad fighter because he could not finish the fight. GSP was not successful throughout 2010 to finish his fights, but he is still the defending welterweight champion.

The rest of the card featured a knockout, TKO and submission victory all on the main card. The majority of the prelims and the Thiago Alves against John Howard fight went to three round decisions. Definitely a healthy variety dose of mixed martial arts spread throughout the two-disc set.

With the first ever French language track added to a UFC DVD, it makes the DVD an instant collector’s item for GSP fans all over Quebec. Not the best GSP fight ever, but easily one that Montrealers will not forget anytime soon. Beating Koscheck so badly that he had to get surgery will forever be a defining moment in MMA history here in Montreal.
