This Weekend in Fights! (May 25th, 2012) finally featured the conclusion of the STRIKEFORCE World Heavyweight Grand Prix, Bellator 69 took place with a premiere Women’s MMA bout, as well as tournament advances. UFC veteran were in action in various promotions, and Bob Sapp threw another fight.

Bellator 69 kicked off the weekend at L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort in Lake Charles, Louisiana airing on MTV 2 and Spike.com. Bellator concluded their Season 6 Middleweight tournament with Maiquel Falcao defeating Andreas Spang in a three round affair. Spang too control of the first round with a flurry of punches stunning Falcao. Falcao was able to recover by clinching with Spang. While pinning Spang up against the cage Falcao delivered an illegal knee which temporarily called a halt to the action and suffered a one-point deduction. For the final two rounds, Falcao was able to utilize his extensive ground skills to control Spang and avoid multiple guillotine attempts. Falcao earned himself $100,000 and the right to fight Alexander Shlemenko for the Bellator Middleweight World Title.

In the semifinal of the Season 6 Welterweight tournament Karl Amoussou squared off against David Rickels. Amoussou controlled Rickels in the first round with superior striking and Judo. The second round saw a lot of back and forth action, but in the third Rickels controlled the majority of the round with vicious ground-and-pound from the top position. Inevitably the bout went to the judges score cards, with Amoussou picking up the split decision victory. Amoussou will now take on Bryan Baker later this year to claim the $100,000 and to determine who will face Ben Askren.

In the premiere Women’s bout of the evening #1 ranked fighter Megumi Fujii squared off against the #2 ranked fighter Jessica Aguilar. Aguilar would take home the unanimous decision victory in a highly debatable call from the judges. All three rounds were very close, but Aguilar counter struck the Japanese phenom, with boxing to out point and avoid submission attempts.

Richard Hale punched his ticket into the Season 7 Light Heavyweight tournament with a 38 submission due to punches ever Josh Burns. Hale will face Beau Tribolet in the opening round on June 22nd at Bellator 71.

Mark Holata also punched his ticket into a Bellator tournament as qualified he qualified for the Bellator Season 7 Heavyweight Tournament when he submitted Abe Wagner midway through the first round with an achilles lock. In the other Heavyweight bout of the evening, one that was featured on the poster was Kevin Asplund versus Ron Sparks never took place. (Full Bellator 69 event results below.)

Also on Friday night Cage Fighting Championship held their 21st event in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The main event featured Bellator & MFC veteran Jesse Juarez versus Robert Whitaker in Welterweight action. After three rounds Juarez got the nod from the judges to take home the victory. Bob Sapp was featured on the card, his second fight in a week, and his second throwaway paycheck collecting under a minute TKO loss. Not only did he lose the bout in the first minute like he did last week, but lost the bout in 12 seconds. UFC, DREAM, STRIKEFORCE, Sengoku, and M-1 veteran Jeff Monson was also on the card. Monson fought for the second time in a month, picking up a unanimous decision victory over Jim Yorke. (Full CFC 21 event results below.)

UFC veteran Tim Hague headlined Prestige FC IV at the Casman Centre in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Hague display a huge amount of toughness against Mike Hackert in a three round war, but it was Hackert who would walk away with the “W”. Hackert used a variety of strikes to bloody up Hague, out striking him throughout all three rounds for the unanimous decision. Also on the card was Ringside MMA veteran David Lafond, who picked up his second career win with a rear-naked choke submission over Jon Cowan with only 12-seconds remaining in the first round. (Full Prestige FC IV event results below.)

The biggest attraction of the weekend was the STRIKEFORCE World Heavyweight Grand Prix form HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The tournament which began in February of 2011 finally concluded.

Daniel Cormier claimed the STRIKEFORCE Grand Prix title after a five round slugfest with Josh Barnett that went to the judges score cards. With Barnett breaking his hand in the first round, the bout was very one-sided in favor of Cormier. Despite Barnett’s attacks both standing and on the ground, Cormier was able to escape them, stay very active on his feet. Cormier bloodied up Barnett with some ground and pound and almost finished the bout with a high kick and a flurry of punches. After the five rounds ended Cormier was declared the victor unanimously.

STRIKEFORCE Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez had his rubber match with Josh Thomson. Both fighters went toe-to-toe with Thompson looking like he was going home with the strap. Thompson controlled the majority of the first round, poked Melendez in the eye three times during the bout, and almost submitted Melendez with a rear-naked choke in the fourth. However, Melendez was able to fight off and stay active enough with strikes and take downs to pick up the split decision.

Mike Kyle did a lot of bitching and complaining prior to this bout about getting a shot at the vacant STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight title, but now he won’t have to worry as he will not be getting that shot, because Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante submitted him in 33-seconds with a guillotine choke. (Full STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight Grand Prix: Barnett vs. Cormier event results below.)

Rumble Time Promotion or RTP held their ninth event at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, Missouri on Saturday night. The main event featured former UFC and WEC veteran Will Campuzano. The former Bantamweight competitor has since made the drop to Flyweight. Campuzano defeated Joshua Sampo with a third round knee to the head knockout. Campuzano is slated to take on Steve Gracia at Legacy Fighting Championship 12 for the inaugural Flyweight title on June 13th. (Full RTP 9 event results below.)

This Weekend in Fights! (May 12-15) is a very special weekend that is extended to Tuesday with the UFC holding their third event of FUEL TV midweek in Virginia. Friday’s events included Bellator in New Jersey and Legacy Fighting Championship in Texas. Saturday’s events included Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki in Poland and Pure MMA in Pennsylvania.

As always, Bellator kicked off the weekend with Bellator 68 in Atlantic City, New Jersey at the Palladium Ballroom of Caesars Atlantic City and broadcast on MTV2 and Spike.com. The event featured the finals of the Bellator Season 6 Featherweight tournament, and one half of the Bantamweight semifinals. In the Featherweight finals Daniel Straus seemingly submitted Marlon Sandro, but he was saved by the bell, but not from the judges. Straus took advantage of the hesitant Sandro, fighting off his submission attempts and landing more crisp strikes and controlled the bout. Straus picks up a $100,000 and a shot at current Bellator Featherweight champion Pat Curran.

In the Bantamweight semifinals, Marcos Galvao edged out Travis Marx for the unanimous decision victory. Galvao used his superior striking and takedown defense to stuff Marx’ attmpts to gain control. Galvao will face the winner of the Luis Nogueira vs. Hiroshi Nakamura later this year.

Prolific knockout artist Marius Zaromskis was on his was to losing a three round decision Waachiim Spiritwolf, but due to a nasty cut cause my Zaromskis in the first round the action was force to end after the second round, as Spiritwolf was not clearly to continue. (Full Bellator 68 event results below.)

Legacy Fighting Championship continued Friday nights action with their 11th event airing on HDNet at Arena Theater in Houston, Texas. The event had former WEC Lightweight Jamie Varner to take on Lee King, but due to Varner signing with the UFC he was replaced by undefeated fighter Evan Cutts, who continued that streak with a second round triangle choke submission over King. In the main event Clay Hantz replaced the injured Jesus Rivera on short notice to take on Jorge Patino for the vacant LFC Lightweight championship now that simultaneous LFC Lightweight and Featherweight champion Daniel Pineda signed with the UFC. Although stepping in last minute wasn’t a pre-fight problem for Hantz, he was knocked out in 64-seconds by Patino. Patino is now the new Legacy Fighting Championship Lightweight champion. Bellator veteran Chad Robichaux snapped his two fight losing skid with submission over two-time UFC veteran Joseph Sandoval in 50-seconds. After going 3-1 in the UFC including a knockout of the night honors, Gerald Harris who was surprisingly cut by the promotion picked up his fourth consecutive victory with a split decision over Mike Bronzoulis. (Full LFC 11 event results below.)

KSW 19 took place at the Atlas Arena in Lodz, Poland former World’s Strongest Man Mariusz Pudziannowski defeated Bob Sapp in the main event. The bout only lasted 39-second Pudziannowski rained down punches on Sapp. Sapp didn’t throw one punch, nor did he attempt to make it a fight, as it was evident that he showed up simply to collect a pay check. Unsigned European phenom Mamed Khalidov knocked out UFC veteran Rodney Wallace in under two minutes of the very first round. UFC & Bellator veteran Jay Silva lost a majority decision to Michal Materia. While UFC, Bellator, Shark Fights, IFL, and BAMMA veteran snapped a four fight losing skid Matt Horwich with a third round TKO of Antoni Chmielewski. (Full KSW 19 event results below.)

Pure MMA took place at the Sports Dome in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the event was headlined by MMA journeyman Din Thomas, who had two stints in the UFC. Since being cut in 2008, Thomas has gone on the fight in local promotions, and picked up his fourth consecutive victory and the Pure MMA Featherweight title with a first round arm bar submission over Cody Bollinger. Another championship bout took place on the card as Pete Martin defeated Michael Byrnes. Oddly enough in a three round decision for the Pure MMALightweight title, which is odd for a title bout. Also on the card were UFC veterans Waylon Lowe & Jason Dent. Lowe picked up his third KO/TKO when the referee was forced to call a halt to the action in the third round over Mike Diggs. After going 1-1 in the UFC, Dent has yet to recover from his UFC 106 loss to George Sotiropoulos, as he continues his losing ways, added a fourth consecutive loss to his record with a unanimous decision loss to Rustam Khabilov. (Full Pure MMA event results below.)

UFC on FUEL TV 3 took place at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia on Tuesday night. The 11 bout card was headlined with the Featherweight title eliminator bout between Dustin Poirier and the Korean Zombie Chan Sung Jung. Jung displayed an extremely evolved MMA game, with a combination of ground work and crisp striking. Both fighters went toe-to-toe for 16 minutes, as Jung scored a fourth round D’Arce choke submission choking Poirier out cold. Jung who was primarily a striker in previous bouts, took Poirier to the ground early, delivering both ground and pound strikes and submission attempts. Poirier was outclassed both on the ground and standing, as he was unable to fight off the persistent Jung throughout the highly contested three rounds.

In the only knockout of the card, Tom Lawlor, who was celebrating his birthday knocked out Jason MacDonald in 50-seconds.

Although he was getting manhandled by Marcus LeVesseur; Cody McKenzie, who was sporting a new look, pulled off his trademark guillotine submission for a first round victory.

Tristar’s Yves Jabouin picked up the third straight victory in the UFC as a Bantamweight when he won a clear cut unanimous decision over Jeff Hougland. Jabouin used a variety of spin kicks to drop Hougland early in the first round, but was unable to finish him off with ground and pound. Jabouin continued his assault throughout the next two rounds, with a combination a kicks, and ground and pound.

Nova Scotia’s TJ Grant won his second fight since dropping to Lightweight, with a unanimous decision victory over Carlo Prater. Doing some training over a Nova Uniao, Grant showed off his much improved ground work over the Brazilian fighter with ground control and submission attempts.

Very good fight card with most of the bouts going the distance, but entertaining in the process. Donald Cerrone kickboxed his was to defeating boxer Jeremy Stephens, who could never find his range. Igor Prokrajac and Fabio Maldonado had one hell of a slugfest over, that seemingly saw Prokrajac the winner. Finally the opening bout of the card saw Francisco Rivera beat up a very tough Alex Soto with kicks and punches. (Full UFC on FUEL TV 3 event results below.)

This Cinco de Mayo Weekend in Fights (May 5th, 2012) was jam packed with four events on Friday, UFC and Floyd Mayweather on Saturday, and Super Fight League on Sunday.

Bellator 67 kicked off the weekend at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario with a Super Fight between reigning Bellator Lightweight champion Michael Chandler Japanese MMA star Akihiro Gono. For a second consecutive week a Bellator Lightweight made short work of a Japanese fighter. Chandler rendered Gono unable to continue in under a minute with a first round TKO.

In the Season 6 Welterweight tournament semifinal Bryan Baker was able to escape Ben Saunders’ submission attempts and crafty Muay Thai to pick up the unanimous decision to advance into the finals. Baker is now set to take on the winner of the Karl Amoussou vs. David Rickels.

Damian Grabowski picked up his second consecutive win in a weeks time with a decision victory over Dave Huckaba.

Canadian standouts on the card included Ryan Ford, Will Romero, and Tristar’s Nordine Taleb all picking up second round TKOs. The debuting Ford defeated Luis Santos, Romero defeated, and Taleb defeated Matt MacGrath. (Full Bellator 67 event results below.)

MFC 33 went down at the Mayfield Inn Trade and Conference Centre, in Edmonton, Alberta. The event was headlined with STRIKEFORCE veteran Nathan Coy challenging MFC Welterweight champion and TUF 13 alumni Ryan McGillivray. Coy took home the Welterweight title after blooding up McGillivray so bad that the bout was ended following the third round. The real drama however, was when McGillivray’s coach Greg Jackson was seen slapping McGillivray across the face after the third round in an attempt to motivate him. Broadcaster Pat Militech was vocal in expressing his disgust for Jackson’s actions.

UFC and Affliction veteran Edwin Dewees continued his two fight losing skid, when he was submitted with a guillotine choke in the first round by co-founder of Hayabusa brand training gear Luke Harris. Harris (9-1) has not loss since his MMA debut in 2007. (Full MFC 33 event results below.)

In other action on Friday night, brother of UFC Lightweight Anthony Pettis, Sergio Pettis picked up a unanimous decision victory over Chris Haney for the North American Fighting Championship’s seventh event entitled “Colosseum” at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Full NAFC – Colosseum event results below.)

Former UFC Heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez (48-18) fought on the inaugural show of Dubai FC in a loss to Stav Economou (13-2) at the Habtoor Grand Beach Resort, in Dubai. (Full Dubai FC 1 – The Beginning event results below.)

Ringside Report Radio’s Kevin McKough made the trek down to East Rutherford, New Jersey for UFC on FOX 3 which took place at the IZOD Center. The card was headlined with Lightweights Nate Diaz taking Jim Miller. Diaz outclassed Miller on all fronts, in classic Diaz fashion, taunting him in the second round before submitting him with a guillotine choke. With the win Diaz now earns himself a shot at the winner between UFC Lightweight champion Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar, which takes place on August 10th in Denver, Colorado at UFC 151.

Johny Hendricks also punched his ticket to a title shot, with a split decision win over Josh Koscheck. Both fighters threw bombs at each other, with Hendricks creating a hematoma over Koscheck’s right eye. Although the action was very back and forth, and close, Koscheck was robbed by the judges.

Alan Belcher displayed some amazing Jiu-Jitsu against Rousimar Palhares, as he attempted to wrench a twister on Palhares. Belcher escaped every leg lock attempt from Palhares and eventually pounded him out for the TKO victory.

Lavar Johnson escaped from near submission as Pat Barry had a americana wrenched far back. Barry was displaying his ever improving ground skills, but was unable to finish Johnson off. Back to their feet, Johnson rushed Barry with relentless combos, rendering Barry unable to continue with 20 seconds left in the round.

Also on UFC on FOX 3, John Hathaway delivered Pascal Krauss his first ever loss, by outclassing him in three for the unanimous decision. Michael Johnson defeated an unimpressive Tony Ferguson by unanimous decision.

Flyweight action went down with two exciting fights as winner of The Ultimate Fighter 14, John Dodson made his division debut against flashy striker Tim Elliott in a three round war that saw Dodson get the judges nod. In a striking fiesta Louis Gaudinot squared off against John Lineker. Both fighters stood toe-to-toe throwing bombs at each other throughout the bout, until Gaudinot slapped on a guillotine choke to end it with sic seconds left in the second round. (Full UFC on FOX 3 event results below.)

In boxing, Floyd Mayweather squared off against Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The two fighters went the distance in a 12-round dog fight, that saw a very game Cotto bloody up Mayweather’s mouth and nose. In the end Mayweather walked away with the decision, and the WBA Super Light Middleweight Title and 36 million dollars.

21-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez dominated 40-year-old Shane Mosley with his speed and counter striking to take a unanimous decision victory to retain the WBC super welterweight title. (Full Mayweather vs. Cotto event results below.)

India based promotion Super Fight League wrapped up the weekend om Sunday night with SFL3 – Thompson vs. Lashley at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. Like most Bobby Lashley fights, it started in his favor, but with the bout going into the later rounds it was all Thompson. Thompson would get the nod and improve his win streak to four.

Trevor Prangley avoided his fourth loss by snapping his skid with a third round TKO victory over Russian fighter Baga Agaev. After taking a lot a heavy shots from Agaev, Prangley dropped him with a devastating right hook. (Full SFL 3 event results below.)

————————————————————————————————–

This Weekend in Fights! (April 28th, 2012) the UFC and Bellator were absent, but the MMA scene continued across the world in a four day weekend of MMA action. The debut of North America’s first ever all Women’s MMA promotion, Invincta FC, as well as UFC and Bellator veterans fighting in Poland, Ireland, New Jersey, California, and a special country versus state card in Minnesota.

King of The Cage kicked off the weekend with an event dubbed “Hardcore” at the San Manuel Casino in Highland, California. The event featured three KOTC championship bouts, in the Heavyweight, Middleweight and Welterweight divisions. KOTC Super Heavyweight and Heavyweight champion Tony Lopez made his third successful Heavyweight title defense against Jason Walaven with a first round TKO at the mid point of the round. KOTC Middleweight champion and guest of Ringside Report Radio Brandon Hunt, attempted to defend his championship and avenge his December 17th loss, in a rematch against Sean Strickland. Strickland however, repeated history with another first round TKO victory over Hunt, this time claiming the KOTC Middleweight championship in the process. KOTC also crowned a new Welterweight champion, as David Gomez and Mat Conte squared off in the cage. Gomez would make short work of Conte with a first round TKO in just over two minutes to claim the championship for the second time in his career. (Full KOTC: Hardcore event results below.)

MMAA or MMA Attack held their second event took place in Spodek, Katowice, Poland on Friday. The event was headlined with some Heavyweight action, as former UFC and Bellator veteran Eddie Sanchez squared off against Bellator Heavyweight Damian Grabowski. Sanchez, who went 3-3 in the UFC and 2-1 in Bellator recently picked up a split decision victory over STRIKEFORCE veteran Brett Rogers for Titans Fighting Championship, and was looking to ride that momentum coming into this bout. However, Grabowski who’s only loss comes at the hands Bellator Heavyweight champion Cole Konrad had different ideas. Grabowski submitted Sanchez in the second round with a kimura. Another former UFC veteran battled on this card, as Peter Sobotta picked a rear-naked choke submission victory over Juan Manuel Suarez in the first round. Sobotta is now 2-0-1 since being released from the UFC in 2010, after three consecutive losses. (Full MMAA 2 event results below.)

New Jersey based Ring of Combat presented their 40th event on Friday, April 27, 2012, at the Tropicana Resort and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. With dual ROC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight champion Tom Deblass leaving the promotion for the UFC, the promotion held a few title eliminator bouts to set up new champions. Of those title eliminators, UFC veteran Marvin Eastman punched his ticket to a title shot by outpointing Dmitry Zabolotny in a three round war. Carlos Brooks placed himself in Light Heavyweight title contention with a 51 second Danny Babcock. (Full ROC 40 event results below.)

Cage Fighting Xtreme held their 33rd event at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Saturday. The event was dubbed “Japan vs. Minnesota”, even though only four of 20 bouts on the card featured Japanese fighters. The main event saw UFC and Bellator veteran Yoshiyuki Yoshida improve his win streak to three, with a third round rear-naked choke submission victory over STRIKEFORCE and W-1 MMA veteran Jeremy Hamilton. WEC & Bellator veteran and cast member of The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 Heavyweights, Zak Jensen was also in action on the card. Jensen lost a decision to undefeated Brett Murphy, who improves his record to 4-0, while Jensen suffers his third consecutive loss. In a happy note form CFX 33, undefeated mixed martial artist, Anthony Martin after picked up his second career victory with a first round triangle choke submission over Kuchlong Kuchlong, Martin brought his girlfriend into the cage and proposed to her, to a nice reaction from the crowd. (Full Cage Fighting Xtreme 33: Japan vs. Minnesota event results below.)

Ireland based promotion Cage Contender held their thirteenth in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The event was headlined with a Heavyweight rematch, pitting UFC veterans Neil Wain against Colin Robinson. Wain had picked up the majority decision over Robinson back in October. This time around the bout wouldn’t go to the judges score cards, as Wain dropped Robinson early in the first round to retain his Cage Contender’s Heavyweight championship. Another UFC veteran Dean Lister returned to action for the first time since December 2009. Lister who has lost all of his bouts via decision refused to let this bout go to the judges score cards, as he submitted Rodney Moore with a devastating heel hook in the third round. (Full Cage Contender 13 event results below.)

All Women’s MMA promotion Invicta FC held their inaugural event on Saturday night at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas; streaming the event on the organization’s website. Headlined by former STRIKEFORCE Women’s Bantamweight champion Marloes Coenen squaring off against Romy Ruyssen in a 2008 rematch. Although, Coenen was unable to finish Ruyssen, as she did in their 2008 bout, the result was the same. Coenen dominated Romy Ruyssen with elbows and kicks over three rounds, picking up the unanimous decision 30-26 on all three judges score cards.

Bellator veteran Jessica Penne was able to finally fight in her proper weight class of 105lbs known as Atomweight, as her only career loss comes at the hands of Bellator 115lbs champion Zoila Grugel. Penne picked up her ninth career victory in an action packed bout with a third round TKO over Lisa Ellis.

Former Strikeforce title challenger and U.S. Marine Liz Carmouche snapped her two fighting losing skid with a first round TKO victory in a lopsided bout against the inexperienced Ashleigh Cury. With Cury stepping into the cage for the second time in her career, Carmouche quickly took Cury to the mat and unleashed a barrage of ground and pound strikes to end the bout in less than two minutes.

2008 Olympic bronze medalist in wrestler Randi Miller made her MMA debut against Mollie Estes. Estes used her size advantage to deliver a number of knees to Miller’s face during the first round. Miller bounced back in the second and third round with her superior wrestling techniques to pick up a third round ground and pound TKO. (Full Invicta FC 1 event results below.)
