WWE: Greatest Superstars of the 21st Century DVD review

Send to Kindle

Relive the rise to super stardom in the WWE of John Cena, Rey Mysterio, Batista, Edge, Randy Orton, and the return of Shawn Michaels in WWE: Greatest Superstars of the 21st Century.

Like past WWE DVDs covering the greatest superstars of the 80′s and 90′s, WWE: Greatest Superstars of the 21st Century covers the WWE stars that made the biggest impact from 2000-2009. More than 20 stars of the past decade are featured in short highlight packages on the first disc while the two other discs are filled with matches. The majority of the commentary comes from the current WWE roster and officials.

Surprisingly WWE showcases talent that no longer works for the company. Brock Lesnar, Jeff Hardy and Kurt Angle all get their own video bios. Angle’s video does poke fun at Angle being a goof more than his abilities at being a great wrestler though. When it comes to Hardy and Lesnar they are both given their dues for their unique and memorable moments in WWE history. Eddie Guerrero is also given a respectable tribute for his five-year contribution to WWE.

Lesnar VS. Angle in a 60-minute Ironman match for the WWE Championship is the most exciting match on this DVD set as it was quite possibly one of the best WWE television matches of all-time. Great back-and-forth action with brilliant storytelling. Although Lesnar’s career in WWE was short, the Ironman match with Angle may have been his best match. Kane unmasking after his match with HHH is a noteworthy event as it spawned into Kane’s current demonic character.

For most WWE fans this is a trip down a very recent memory lane. New WWE fans will likely benefit from this history lesson if they only tuned in a few years ago. A little disappointed that they did not expand on some of the controversial moments a lot of superstars caused. While The Miz hints at how JBL is a bully and did not like him there was no in-depth reasons to why JBL treated new talent poorly. The WWE portrays a positive light on almost every aspect of their entertainers.

WWE: WrestleMania XXVII 2-disc DVD review

Send to Kindle

The Rock made his triumphant return to WWE home video guest hosting WrestleMania XXVII and laying the smackdown on John Cena and The Miz causing havoc in the main event.

Starting off the biggest WWE show of the year, The Rock promised to ‘bring it’ and he did so by hitting on Eve Torres, a face-off with long-time rival Stone Cold Steve Austin, and using his authority along with his move set against Cena and Miz. Fair to say that The Rock’s larger than life presence made this year’s Mania special.

The Undertaker putting his 18-0 WrestleMania streak on the line against HHH in a No Holds Barred Match was clearly the match of the night. HHH and Taker put on an exciting display of showmanship, athleticism, and dramatic pauses. HHH brought his brutal side that night, violently hitting Taker with numerous chair shots even a shot that nailed Taker on the head. HHH made sure that no matter the result Taker will no longer be the same ever again.

Jersey Shore’s Snooki made her WWE in-ring debut in a six-person tag team match as she teamed with Trish Stratus and John Morrison against LayCool and Dolph Ziggler. Surprisingly, Snooki displayed some impressive maneuvers that included a cartwheel handspring back elbow. This bout included a bit of controversy backstage as Morrison gave Stratus ‘the cold shoulder’ as their team celebrated. WWE announcer Michael Cole made his singles in-ring debut against Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler with Stone Cold Steve Austin as the guest referee. Almost every time Austin tries to talk audio is completely cut due to the amount he swears and WWE doing their best to keep their PG rating intact. Austin followed his own rules and raised hell like he usually does. This caused three announcers to go down allowing Jim Ross and Lawler to commentate on Taker-HHH, the six-person tag and Cena-Miz.

This is one of the rare WWE DVDs that has no extra content whatsoever. If you’re looking to watch the Hall-of-Fame ceremony, the United States Championship match between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan and quite a few more extras, you have to get the 3-disc Collector’s Edition. This edition only shows you the original broadcast that has been edited. Undertaker does not come out to Johnny Cash’s “Ain’t No Grave” just his WWE theme, HHH does not have Metallica’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls” for his special Mania entrance, Cole against Lawler was edited down due to the finger salute from Austin to Cole.

The 2-disc set is only recommended for those that only want relive the WrestleMania XXVII event. With Edge’s last ever WWE match defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Alberto Del Rio, the return of WWE Attitude stars The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, JR returning to the announcers booth and quite possibly one of the last matches ever for The Undertaker, WrestleMania XXVII has so many historic moments all jam-packed into one night.

WWE: Elimination Chamber 2011 DVD review

Send to Kindle

The Rock made his triumphant return to World Wrestling Entertainment home video delivering a war of words against John Cena in the special features on the WWE: Elimination Chamber 2011 DVD.

A week before the last pay-per-view prior to WrestleMania, The Rock appeared on RAW to announce that he was going to guest host the biggest WWE event of the year. The Rock did not waste time stating his dislike for Cena dissing him while he was away from WWE. The Rock delivered classic and new material against Cena, who responded the following week on RAW with a freestyle rap against The Rock. WrestleMania is now a lot more intriguing thanks to this new storyline twist.

Canada’s own Trish Stratus also made her return to WWE, but it was at the Elimination Chamber event as she revealed her role on the new season of WWE’s Tough Enough show. Stratus did a hybrid of Booker T’s and The Rock’s catchphrases and delivered some Stratusfaction by saving Kelly Kelly from a beatdown from LayCool later on in the show.

Elimination Chamber starts off with a solid encounter between the no.1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship, Alberto Del Rio, against the Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston in a non-title match. Del Rio showed an aggressive streak throughout the match that Kingston had difficulty keep up with at the start. However, once Kingston got an opening he seized it and unloaded his typical offence against Del Rio. Del Rio though delivered a stunning neckbreaker with Kingston caught in the top rope and finished off Kingston soon afterwards.

The first Elimination Chamber of the night saw Edge defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Rey Mysterio, Big Show, Kane, Drew McIntyre and Wade Barrett. Despite Edge having to start the match he was able to outlast all five other competitors to move on to the WrestleMania showdown with Del Rio. Edge started off battling Mysterio until the big men got involved and started throwing the superstars into the glass pods. Carnage reigned supreme until Mysterio and Edge teamed up to take out the giants. Mysterio jumping off the top of the cage and the abuse Barrett took going through multiple pods was merely the start of the chaos to come.

While Barrett had a rough night, his teammates from The Corre had a better time against the WWE Tag Team Champions Santino and Kozlov. Capturing their second tag team titles, Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater continued their rise to fame in sports entertainment. The Miz also believed he continued his rise with a victory over WWE Hall-of-Famer Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler. When Alex Riley was ejected to the backstage Lawler got a fair fight, but it was not enough to beat Miz. Miz now believes he lived up to the claim of the greatest of all the world champions.

The main event saw John Cena, CM Punk, John Morrison, R-Truth, Sheamus and Randy Orton battle for the last chance for a WWE Championship match at WrestleMania. Sheamus and Morrison stood out the most in this match, putting their bodies on the line countless times. This allowed for Orton to come in and dominate until Punk came in. When it came down to Cena and Punk, Punk was badly beaten with blood coming down his leg and some bruising on his back following an Attitude Adjustment on the steel floor.

WWE is clearly picking up momentum as WrestleMania draws near. The return of ‘Attitude Era’ stars has been a great mix to the current batch of WWE superstars. The Rock and Cena confrontation is one that fans have been waiting for a while now. The Elimination Chambers delivered the price of admission, and if you missed it live, well worth the price of the DVD.

WWE: Wrestling’s Highest Flyers DVD review

Send to Kindle

Jimmy Snuka’s dive off the top of a cage, Jeff Hardy’s leap of faith at WrestleMania 2000, Evan Bourne nailing his Air Bourne maneuver, all just a small taste of a thrilling three-disc DVD set.

WWE: Wrestling’s Highest Flyers DVD takes a look at 20 superstars in the WWE video library that have dazzled, shocked, and innovated the WWE Universe with their aerial attacks. 27 matches are showcased on the three-disc set. The DVD features a great mix of WWE legends, alumni, current WWE high flyers and even former superstars that compete outside of WWE.

All 20 superstars get their own short bio package, some of them have segments showing a move with a camera strapped to their chest. The features on Steamboat, Pillman, Eddie Guerrero, all look similar to past clips shown on their own WWE documentaries, but the matches featured are not from their DVDs.

For Lucha Libre action, the six-man tag team match from WCW: Bash at the Beach 97 delivers an insane array of moves that you rarely see even in today’s Lucha Libre. Shelton Benjamin’s match is a great reminder that he had all the potential to be a main eventer in WWE.

For a compilation DVD set this is an excellent selection of the high flying wrestling style of North America, Japan and Mexico. While DVD collectors may already have Guerrero VS. Rey Mysterio from Halloween Havoc 97 and Edge & Christian VS. Hardy Boyz VS. Dudley Boyz from WrestleMania 2000, there are still plenty of matches to make this a worthy purchase.
