King Mo signs with both Bellator & TNA Wrestling

Send to Kindle

New York, NY, May 10, 2012 - In an unprecedented move – one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts, “King Mo” Lawal, has signed a deal to compete in Spike TV’s two major sports properties, Bellator Fighting Championships and TNA’s IMPACT Wrestling. King Mo will join the stars of TNA this summer and resume his mixed martial arts career next year when Bellator Fighting Championships moves to Spike TV from its current television home, MTV2.  The deal was jointly announced today by Kevin Kay, President, Spike TV along with Bjorn Rebney, Chairman & CEO, Bellator Fighting Championships and Dixie Carter, President, TNA Entertainment.

“King Mo is an incredible athlete and a great addition to the Bellator family. He immediately adds prominence and star-power to our light heavyweight division,” said Rebney.

“King Mo is the perfect athlete for this type of alliance.  He is the real deal in MMA, and his bold personality and world class wrestling accomplishments are unparalleled.  I’m confident he will have a major impact in both sports,” stated Carter.

Lawal (10-1-1) launched his mixed martial arts career in 2008, and after four straight wins, he faced off against his toughest challenge, renowned fighter Mark Kerr. King Mo knocked out Kerr in the first round, and eight months later he defeated Gegard Mousasi in a Light Heavyweight world title fight. Lawal also holds an impressive KO victory against multiple-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Roger Gracie in September 2011.

“This deal is a dream come true for me,” Lawal said. “Bjorn and Dixie have given me the opportunity to engage in my two great loves, mixed martial arts and professional wrestling, at the same time.  And, to have it all on Spike TV is really Buttercream icing on a big ole cake – not that whipped cream stuff either!”

King Mo rose to grappling acclaim as a NCAA Division I All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State University in 2003 and a three-time U.S. National Champion (2005, 2006, and 2008) in the 84 kilogram division.  In 2007, as a member of the U.S. National team, he brought home a gold medal at the Pan American Games and a silver medal at the World Cup.

A native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Lawal lives in San Jose, Calif. and trains with the prominent American Kickboxing Academy.

TNA: Immortal Forever? DVD review

Send to Kindle

Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff completely changed the landscape of Total Nonstop Action two years in a row and now fans can relive how it all began in TNA’s latest DVD release Immortal Forever?

Starting from Hogan’s announcement at Madison Square Garden that he was coming to TNA and ending with the dethroning of Jeff Hardy by Sting, Hogan along with his Immortals explains why he had to take over TNA in interviews shot in the same style as the ones on Impact Wrestling. Dixie Carter along with AJ Styles, Beer Money and Kazarian give their side of Hogan’s evil takeover. While Styles puts down Hogan all the time, the others do give Hogan his dues and explain how they went along with Hogan for a while.

This DVD set also takes you back to particular moments that stood out when TNA was on Mondays. The entire feud and matches Hogan had with Ric Flair are all shown along with the complete 2010 Lethal Lockdown match featuring Team Hogan against Team Flair. Hogan explains his problems with Sting that led to Sting completely destroying Jeff Jarrett and a future suspension. Unfortunately, matches like RVD VS. Abyss from Bound for Glory 2010 and Jeff Hardy against Mr. Anderson in a ladder match for the TNA World Title from Against All Odds 2011 are shown already in progress.

Despite a few times when the story gets sidetracked with Hogan-Flair and the introduction of EV2, the biography is mostly in chronological order. As much as this is a DVD about the Hogan-Bischoff regime it is also a DVD documenting Sting’s achievements in TNA and why he decided to stay for the last two years to battle the Hulkster. Despite Sting winning the World Title Hogan does get the final say at the end of both discs.

Hogan seems genuinely upset over Carter’s comments about EV2 being the 90′s equivalent to Hulk in the 80′s. Hogan goes on a decently long rant about how the guys in EV2 do not even compare to what he did. Hogan also seems genuine when he talks about how guys need to step up now that wrestling matters. He criticizes the TNA originals for having five-star matches that no one cares about because they are not following his guidance.

TNA could have also called this TNA: 2010-2011 Greatest Moments, as it feels a bit like a follow-up to last year’s Greatest Moments DVD. Considering you’re getting over six hours of storytelling and matches you definitely get your money’s worth for the low price this DVD goes for. The addition of complete matches to a DVD set like this makes it a lot more desirable than last year’s. Surprisingly the best wrestler in TNA, Kurt Angle, is rarely featured although his Bound For Glory match against Mr. Anderson and Jeff Hardy is shown.

TNA: Lockdown 2011 DVD review

Send to Kindle

Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett continued their feud of the year when they nearly killed each other in the most brutal steel cage match in the history of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling at TNA: Lockdown 2011.

Angle, looking to outdo his incredible steel cage matches of the past, attempted a few new maneuvers that did not go exactly as he hoped, but the end result gave fans an amazing show. Angle looked like he broke his neck once again when he attempted to reverse Jeff Jarrett’s powerbomb from the top rope. Jarrett looked like he lost all his wind when Angle landed on him after an attempted belly-to-belly suplex from the top rope. Although not the main event of the show, Angle-Jarrett was clearly the match of the night.

Lockdown started off strong with a No.1 Contender X-Division XScape Match which ended up as the last match for Jay Lethal in TNA. Lethal and Amazing Red had a nice exchange, but the match was mainly highlighted by former TNA talents Generation Me having problems working together. Sting defending the TNA Heavyweight Championship against Mr. Anderson and Rob Van Dam was an even back-and-forth bout until Hulk Hogan interfered and got involved in the match.

The Lethal Lockdown match was a contrast compared to last year where you had Fortune and Sting as the villains against Hogan’s heroes. This year Fortune are now the heroes against Hogan’s Immortals which consisted of Nature Boy Ric Flair, Matt Hardy, Bully Ray and Abyss. Both teams start off at ringside unlike everyone having their own entrance. The bloody destruction of Flair by Fortune is truly one fans of hardcore wrestling will love, but fans of the Nature Boy will be disgusted with Flair getting butchered in the ring and forced to tap out.

TNA stays ahead of WWE when it comes to giving wrestling fans a little extra on their DVDs. Not only do you get the entire Lockdown event, but TNA provides a bonus disc that includes the entire pre-show for Lockdown, post match interviews, a music video recap, and interviews from Lockdown’s fan interaction. Jarrett looks like he is completely out of it while doing his post match interview and Angle is sporting a huge ice pack on his neck in his. The Lockdown Fan Interaction is a different look at TNA stars as they interact with their fans and give their thoughts on their matches. Mickie James and RVD come across as two who are very approachable at the event.
