This St-Patrick’s Day Weekend in Fights! was jam packed with lots of MMA action. Including Bellator, Cage Warriors, Score Fighting Series, M-1 Challenge on Friday and  Ringside MMA, BAMMA USA, Kings of Kombat on Saturday.

 

MMAJunkie.com continued to air the series of Cage Warrriors events with Cage Warriors Fight Night 4, emanating from the Dubai World Trade Centre in the United Arab Emirates. The event was headlined with the Cage Warriors Heavyweight championship bout pitting Germain fighter Andreas Kraniotakes versus American fighter Mike Hayes. The bout never made itino championship rounds, as Hayes picked up the win and the title late in the third. With the win, Hayes (17-4) is now riding a five-fight win streak and is 9-1 in his past 10 fights. In an un-sportsman like conduct, Sheila Gaff  knockout Jennifer Maia in 10 seconds, as Maia attempted to touch gloves, but was met with a punch. (Full CWFN 4 event results below.)

On Friday night at Bellator 61 from The Horseshoe Riverdome in Bossier City, Louisiana, the quarterfinals of the Bellator Season 6 Middleweight Tournament took place with Maiquel Falcao, Vyacheslav Vasilevsky, Bruno Santos and Brian Rogers all picking up wins to advance to the semifinals. Of these four tournament battles, only Brian Rogers didn’t leave his decision in the hands of the judges, as he knocked out Vitor Vianna with vicious flying knee late in the first frame. The semifinal match ups will be Brian Rogers versus Bruno Santos, while Maiquel Falcao will battle Vyacheslav Vasilevsky at Bellator 66  on April 20th. On the under card of Bellator 61, contestant of WWE Tough Enough, Jeremiah Riggs return to MMA after alleging that he was “Blackballed” from wrestling. Unfortunately for him, his return to MMA and Bellator debut was not a successful one. Trey Houston, “upset” Riggs wih a first round submission victory. (Full Bellator 61 event results below.)

Canadian Sports Television Channel “The Score” continues their coverage, and promotion of local fight events with The Score Fighting Series 5. This event was held at Hamilton Place Theatre, in Hamilton, Ontario. The event was headlined by John Alessio and Ryan Healy. The back and forth bout saw both men unable to finish the other. Alessio wasn’t able to capitalize on his first round dominance, and lost the second round to Healy. The final round of the bout saw Alessio in top position, but again unable to finish, yet with the strong finish was able o get the nod from the judges. Forrest Petz defeated  Sergey Juskevic via TKO in the second round  in the fight of the night. In an exciting back and fourth bout, each fighter had chances to finish each other, as Juskevic dropped Petz in the first round. However,  Petz miraculously got back up and finished the bout in the second. Lyndon Whitlock picked up the knockout of the night when he dropped  Corey Houston with a counter right with only 32 seconds remaining in the first round. M-1 Challenge 31 took place at the Ice Palace, in St. Petersburg, Leningrad Oblast, Russia, with a Heavyweight main event of two grappling specialists in Jeff Monson and Alexey Oleinik. In a back a fourth battle, Monson came out the victor with a hard fought split decision. Rashid Magomedov captured his first champion in MMA, when he went the distance with Yasubey Enomoto. Brother of the greatest Heavyweight of all time, Aleksander Emelianenko picked a TKO victory early in the second round over Tadas Rimkevicius. Ringside MMA 13 – St-Patrick’s Day Beatdown was held at the Metropolis, in Montreal. Originally a nine bout card, was changed to seven. Kyle Nelson made his Pro MMA debut, in an action packed three round war against Mik Dufort in a very back and fourth bout. Dufort displayed an extremely tough chin, as he was on dream street multiple times during the bout, but continued. Olivier Aubain-Mercier return to action for his second bout, and just like his first ended in quick and impressive fashion with a rear-naked choke submission. Vladimir Starcencov pulled off an impressive Americana submission over Boxer Stephane Tessier. The hold was so wrenched back, it was a wonder why Tessier hadn’t tapped sooner. Mike Ricci bounced back from his championship loss at Ringside 12 in October. Ricci won a three round decision against Tony Hervey. During the first round, a stage light exploded, sending glass all over the mat, haulting the bout for several minutes. After losing the fight, Hervey grabbed the mic and told Ricci that he was a striker, and his lay and prey style sucked. In the main event of the evening, Paul Cheng made quick work of Eric Barrak, as he rushed him with strikes, took him down, and force him to verbally submit. BAMMA USA held their fifth event at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California, on Saturday with Bad Beat 5. Former 4-time UFC veteran, and assumed retired mixed martial artist Mike “The Joker” Guymon made his return to MMA, after announcing after his last UFC bout in January of 2011, that he was calling it quits. Guymon was successful in his return to the sport, with a second round TKO victory over Chris Leyva. Another former UFC combatant Gabe Ruediger continues his loosing skid to three, with he was knocked out by Scott Catlin in 36 seconds of the second round. Shamrock Events – Kings of Kombat 6  took place at the Springers Leisure Centre, Keysborough, Victoria, Australia. The event was a mix event that included MMA, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and Boxing bouts on the card. The event was headlined by former UFC Heavyweight/Light Heavyweight fighter James McSweeney versus Felise Leniu. McSweeney made shirt work of  Leniu, as he submitted him with a Rear-Naked Choke in the first round. (Full Shamrock Events – Kings of Kombat 6 event results below.)

Mic Dufort (0-0) v. Kyle Nelson (0-0)- 155 lbs.

Round 1- Nelson attempted a guillotine and fell into a full-mount. Dufort reversed the position but landed in a triangle attempt. Nelson worked for the triangle but was unable to secure the hold. Dufort pushed out and got to his feet but ate some heavy punches with both fighters standing. Dufort landed a heavy right hand of his own but Nelson landed a nice head-kick. Nelson scored with good punches that wobbled Dufort but was then clinched. Nelson scored another takedown and landed in mount but Dufort reversed the position and tried to land some punches in guard. Nelson got to his feet and landed a heavy knee to a very wobbly Dufort as the round came to a close. We score Round 1 for Kyle Nelson: 10-9

Round 2- Nelson landed a left hand that dropped Dufort early in the round but did not want to exchange with Dufort on the ground. Dufort was able to take Nelson’s back with a body-triangle and landed some good punches to the head and body. Nelson got Dufort off his back and got back to his feet but a stiff jab. Dufort landed a crane-kick to Nelson’s face but did not rock his opponent. Dufort dropped Nelson with a punch and again worked some ground-and-pound from the back-mount. We score Round 2 for Mic Dufort: 10-9

Round 3- Nelson landed a knee to the face and some leg kicks as Dufort circled. Nelson landed a huge head-kick and some knees in a muay-thai clinch but Dufort escaped and continued to circle. Dufort shot for a single-leg takedown that was neatly defended by Nelson. Nelson landed a flurry of punches that rocked Dufort and a nice knee to the face. Dufort did not drop but was bloodied and continued to take big punches. Nelson beat Dufort against the cage and defended a takedown as the round came to a close. We score Round for Kyle Nelson: 10-9

Dave Pariseau (7-7-1) v. Louis-Christophe Laurin (4-3)- 155 lbs.

Round1- Pariseau landed an early takedown and worked some punches and elbows from side-control. Laurin was able to sweep Pariseau and land inside his guard. Laurin scored some punches and looked for a guillotine. Pariseau got to his feet but Laurin jumped guard for a guillotine attempt. Pariseau escaped the hold and worked some ground-and-pound from inside Laurin’s guard. We score Round 1 for Dave Pariseau: 10-9

Round 2- Pariseau landed another early takedown but Laurin swept him and worked some ground-and-pound. Pariseau looked for an arm-bar from bottom but Laurin escaped and looked for a heel hook. Pariseau avoided the hook and landed some punches from half-guard while Laurin continued to look for the heel hook. Pariseau managed to transition into a back-mount and land good punches but Laurin rolled out and back into Pariseau’s guard. Pariseau scored a beautiful sweep and landed in top position landing strikes as time expired in the second round. We score a very close Round 2 for Dave Pariseau: 10-9

Round 3- Pariseau scored another early takedown and landed punches to the head and body from inside Laurin’s guard. Pariseau continued to work his ground-and-pound from inside Laurin’s guard Laurin rolled to his stomach and gave up his back. Pariseau looked for a rear-naked choke but Laurin rolled him off his back and looked to reverse the position. Pariseau managed to avoid getting his back taken in the scramble and pushed Laurin over to finish the fight in his guard. We score Round 3 for Dave Pariseau: 10-9

Round 1- Starcenov scored a nice trip takedown in the first 10 seconds of the round. Starcenov looked for an Americana-style kimura arm-lock but was unable to secure the hold. Starcenov mounted his opponent and softened him up with punches before securing the Americana to force the submission.

Yohan Gariepy (2-3) v. Christ Franck (1-3)- 170 lbs.

Round 1- Gariepy and Franck exchanged solid leg kicks as they circled each other early in the first round. Franck clinched Gariepy against the cage but Gariepy scored a takedown. Franck got back to his feet and continued to look for knees to the body while pushing Griepy against the fence. Franck scored a takedown of his own and landed in Gariepy’s guard. We score a very close Round 1 for Christ Franck: 10-9

Round 2- Gariepy opened the round with a stiff kick below Franck’s belt. The fight was momentarily stopped but Franck returned to action and landed a solid punch when the bout resumed. Franck landed a solid body kick and another takedown to land inside Gariepy’s guard. Franck landed a solid elbow and improved to half-guard. Gariepy pushed Franck off and got to his feet. Gariepy pushed Franck against the fence and scored a takedown of his own. Gariepy advanced into side-control and laned some elbows but Franck quickly swept him and landed inside the guard of Gariepy. Franck landed solid elbows and hammer-fists that forced Gariepy to turn and give up his back. Franck looked for a rear-naked choke as time expired in the round. We score Round 2 for Christ Franck: 10-9

Round 3- Both fighters circled tentatively in the final round. Franck landed a solid jab and Gariepy responded with a leg kick. Franck landed a solid kick to the body but got caught and taken down. Gariepy landed in half-guard and landed some punches to the head and body. Franck attempted a kimura but got nailed with several solid punches to the body. Gariepy improved his position into a full-mount but got swept with Franck landing in his guard. Franck tried to land strikes but Gariepy was able to defend the majority of the punches. We score a close Round 3 for Yohan Gariepy: 10-9

Olivier Aubin-Mercier (1-0) v. Daniel Ireland (0-0) -155 lbs.

Round 1- Mercier landed some solid punches and elbows early in the round and pushed his opponent against the fence. Mercier scored a takedown and landed some elbows. Ireland got back to his feet but Mercier landed a beautiful trip-takedown and landed in a full-mount. Ireland took some punches and gave up his back, allowing Mercier to sink in a rear-naked choke and force the tap-out.

Stephan Lamarche (8-10) v. Kevin Morin (5-4)- 155 lbs.

Round 1- Morin scored a takedown early in the round and landed in half-guard. Morin transitioned to side-control but Lamarche took the space to get back to his feet. The two fighters continued to clinch against the fence and Morin scored another takedown. Lamarche looked for a kimura with Morin in side-control but was unable to hold on. Lamarche got back to his feet but was taken down again. Morin landed some punches to Lamarche’s head while on the ground but Lamarche was able to scramble to his feet. Morin landed knees while clinching Lamarche against the fence and took him down again. Morin landed elbows from half-guard and maintained top position as the round came to an end. We score Round 1 for Kevin Morin: 10-9

Round 2- Morin scored a single-leg takedown in the first minute of the second round. Morin attempted an anaconda choke but Lamarche punched his way out of the hold. Morin maintained top position and improved from a modified half-guard into a full-mount. Lamarche rolled to his stomach and Morin sunk his hooks in to take his back. Morin worked for a rear-naked choke but Lamarche reversed the position and landed in Morin’s guard. Lamarche landed some punches from Morin’s guard but was unable to do significant damage. Morin got back to his feet and pushed Lamarche against the fence, looking for a double-leg takedown. Morin pulled Lamarche down and ended the round in his guard. We score Round 2 for Kevin Morin: 10-9

Round 3- Morin scored another takedown early in the final round to land inside Lamarche’s guard. Lamarche looked for an arm-bar from bottom but Morin escaped the attempt and transitioned to side-control. Morin worked to maintain his position and land strikes. Lamarche gave up his back and Morin sunk his hooks in to secure a back- mount. Morin looked to sink in a rear-naked choke and took punches from Lamarche as he tried to fight out of the hold. Lamarche escaped the position just as time ran out in the fight. We score Round 3 for Kevin Morin: 10-9

David Lafond (1-2) v. Tim Chessel (0-2)- 155 lbs.

This fight is canceled after a pre-fight medical revealed kidney stones for Tim Chessel

Mike Ricci (6-2) v. Tony Hervey (12-11) 155 lbs.

Round 1- Ricci shot in hard to score an early takedown and landed some punches. Hervey rolled over and Ricci sunk one hook in trying to take his back. Hervey scrambled to his feet but Ricci kept him in a clinch. Hervey pushed Ricci against the fence but Ricci reversed the position and landed solid knees to the body. Ricci landed another takedown and worked some punches from inside half guard. A light in the building dropped on a stage near the cage and shattered pieces of glass into the octagon. The referee was alerted and the fight was paused while the cleaning crew could sweep away the glass. After an over 5-minute break Tony Hervey refused to go back down to the mat into a half-guard, which was the position he was in before the break. The referee for some reason allowed that to happen and the fighters re-started standing up. Ricci looked for a takedown and clinched Hervey against the fence as time finally elapsed in the round. We score Round 1 for Mike Ricci: 10-9

Round 2- Ricci scored a takedown early in the second round and worked some ground-and-pound from inside Hervey’s guard. Hervey attempted an arm-bar but Ricci avoided the hold and transitioned to side-control. Hervey worked him back into half-guard where Ricci was able to land punches and elbows to the head. Ricci continued to work solid ground and pound but Hervey was able to get back to his feet and land a takedown of his own. Hervey landed in Ricci’s guard and was almost caught in a triangle choke and arm-bar but escaped as time expired. We score Round 2 for Mike Ricci: 10-9

Round 3- Ricci scored a takedown in the first-minute of the final round. Ricci worked punches to the head and body from inside Hervey’s guard and transitioned into half-guard. Ricci continued to work his ground-and-pound landing several solid punches to the head and body. Hervey was able to push Ricci off but Ricci stayed on him and took him down again. Ricci transitioned from side-control into a full-mount but Hervey scrambled and pushed Ricci back into his guard. Ricci continued to land punches as the fight came to a close. We score Round 3 for Mike Ricci: 10-9

Eric Barrak (1-0) v. Paul Cheng (1-1)- Heavyweights

Round 1- Paul Cheng charged at Barrak with a straight kick and wild punches. Cheng landed a takedown and scored some punches to Barrak’s head while transitioning to side-control. Cheng landed some strikes and the fight was stopped.
