Note: These rankings were compiled and debated on the September 30, 2011 episode of Ringside Report Radio. Results from October will be reflected in the November rankings.

Josh Barnett moves up from 7th to 5th ranked heavyweight in the world with a first round submission win over Sergei Kharitonov in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-finals on September 10. Daniel Cormier moves up from an honorable mention last month to 6th in the world with a knockout victory over previously 5th ranked Antonio Silva on September 10 in the other SF HW GP semi-final. With his loss, Antonio Silva drops from 5th to 8th, knocking Shane Carwin out of the 8th spot and the top 10 due to his inactivity. Since his loss to Junior Dos Santos in June, Carwin has been inactive and has no opponent or date for his next bout.

This is the second installment of the Ringside Report official MMA Top 10 rankings.

There was some movement in the heavyweight division rankings in August. Fedor Emelianenko drops out of the Top 10 with a loss to Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight champion Dan Henderson on July 30. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira moves back into the Top 10 Heavyweights in the world with an impressive knockout victory over Brendan Schaub. Nogueira had been absent from the octagon since February of 2010 when he lost to Cain Velasquez.

Heavyweights

Henderson’s victory bumps him up to 6th on the list while Miller drops to 7th. The fact that Anthony Pettis is one of the few men to hold a victory over Henderson is enough to move him from 8th ranked in August, to 5th in September. The fact that Clay Guida is one of the few to hold a win over Anthony Pettis will also earn him a boost in the rankings as he switches places with Jim Miller and goes from 7th to 4th. Shinya Aoki and Eddie Alvarez move from 5th and 6th respectively to 8th and 9th due to their lack of facing top 10 level competition.

Shane Carwin’s near year long return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship saw him leave the octagon a bloody mess after encountering the heavy hands of Junior Dos Santos at UFC: 131 in Vancouver, Canada.

The first round for Carwin was the complete opposite compared to his first round against Brock Lesnar. Dos Santos nailed some nasty ground and pound to close off the first round, so much so that Dos Santos looked to the official in amazement for not ending the fight right there. Carwin emerged with a crimson mask and looked like he was partially knocked out. Out of respect for Carwin’s ability to nail that one knockout punch, Dos Santos played it safe for the next two rounds as he punched and dodged to earn a title shot against UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Carwin’s original opponent before replacing Lesnar, Jon Olav Einemo battled Dave Herman in the fight of the night. Einemo looked like he rocked Herman just at the end of the first round and was able to secure a possible knockout victory, but the round ended just as Herman went down. In the second round Einemo continued to beat down on Herman with some serious knee shots and charging punches, but miraculously Herman nailed a strong knee that brought Einemo down. Einemo recovered to deliver a wicked slugfest back and forth with Herman that Herman got the best of in his UFC debut. Easily one of the most exciting fights of the year in the UFC.

Kenny Florian came back from being down a round to win an unanimous decision victory against Diego Nunes. Florian was awarded a title shot against UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo thanks to his win. Florian made his comeback by nailing a vicious elbow to the top of the head of Nunes. With Nunes dazzled, Florian was able to takedown Nunes and punish him on the ground. Nunes did not pass out, but was still beaten into a pool of his own blood.

The butterflies that fighters have before going through the entrance curtain, Florian explaining his drop to the featherweight division, and post fight comments are the features for the behind the scenes footage. Dos Santos explains that he was a bit nervous since there was a lot on the line in his fight, but he feels that he proved that he is quicker and has better boxing skills.

UFC: 131 was not the best UFC show this year, but there were a few moments that will definitely make the best of 2011 highlights. Best for fans that enjoy particular fighters or were anticipating one of the fights on the card.

For the first and perhaps only time, Lesnar opens up with Paul Heyman co-writing on his personal life in his memoirs Death Clutch: My Story of Determination, Domination, and Survival.

Lesnar explains how it was tough growing up poor on a farm in South Dakota. Lesnar dispels the rumours that he grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth, however credits his parents a lot for helping him early in life. Lesnar explains how he changed from a scrawny kid to a larger than life heavyweight in his college days.

Following his spectacular double overtime victory for the NCAA Heavyweight Championship in amateur wrestling, WWE talent scout Gerald Brisco saw Lesnar and signed him to the biggest WWE development deal of all-time, or at least from what they told him. After telling the WWE that “If you want me to get better, then you need to put me in the ring with better people!” WWE brought Lesnar to the main roster where he went on a path of destruction with Heyman.

The difficult road schedule and the politics of the WWE environment eventually started to wear down “The Next Big Thing.” Lesnar admits to drinking a bottle of vodka a day and taking a couple hundred pills of Vicodin became his only way to numb the pain he was going through, especially after he got a concussion from the Shooting Star Press at WrestleMania 19. Lesnar openly says that WWE pushed him to do the move even though he thought it was a dumb idea.

Lesnar did not want to become like Curt Hennig or Ric Flair, he wanted out and he wanted to move on. A major motorcycle accident stopped him from going further in his NFL career, but after a bitter contract dispute with WWE, Lesnar jumped the barricade at an Ultimate Fighting Championship event and got Dana White’s attention. Right away Lesnar said he wanted to face the best and he got to face the best. To those tradition MMA fans that believe he got a title shot too quickly he says, “Screw them.”

A lot of stories especially when it comes wrestling are not mentioned because Lesnar cannot remember thanks to all the drug and alcohol abuse he went through. While Lesnar is brief with a lot of his stories, fans still get an honest and aggressive opinion from the former UFC Heavyweight Champion. Bullying around the Big Show, questioning the honesty of The Rock and Kurt Angle, and criticizing Vince McMahon for the way he treats his superstars. Wrestling fans get more than enough shocking and bunt opinions from Lesnar.

Haters of Lesnar will only look at this book and find they were always right about how he was born with a wicked spirit. Lesnar sums himself up quite nicely though, “You can call it ego, or cockiness, or arrogance, or anything else you want, but I’m used to being in control. Some people were meant to lead, others were meant to follow. I was born to take charge. It’s not only what I do, it’s who I am.”
