UFC 158 Card Update!

Send to Kindle

Only 70-days away from the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s return to ufc158-postersmallMontreal on March 16th, 2013 for UFC 158: GSP vs. Diaz. After the December 16th announcement of the main event of UFC Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (23-2 MMA, 17-2 UFC) defending his title for the eighth time versus former STRIKEFORCE Welterweight champion Nick Diaz (26-8-1 MMA, 7-5 UFC, 6-0 SF) was made official, the UFC has continued to stack this card.

Already announced, Rory MacDonald will receive a UFC 115 rematch against Carlos Condit, the title hungry Johny Hendricks will square off against Jake Ellenberger, and Patrick Cote will make his first drop to Welterweight to face STRIKEFORCE import Bobby Voelker.

The UFC has just added three more Canadian talent heavy bouts to the card with John Makdessi versus Daron Cruickshank, Chris Camozzi versus Nick Ring, and Jordan Mein versus Dan Miller.

After destroying the Canadian local scene, John “The Bull” Makdessi (10-2 Makdessi vs Cruickshank UFC 158MMA, 3-2 UFC) jumped into the UFC with two highlight reel performances going the distance with Pat Audinwood where he displayed his superb striking ability at UFC 124, and the famous spinning back fist knockout of Kyle Watson at UFC 129. Makdessi then suffered his first ever loss to Dennis Hallman at UFC 140 in an unfair bout as Hallman who was normally a Welterweight fighter dropped to Lightweight, but missed weight and came into the bout much larger than Makdessi. Clearly affected by his first loss, Makdessi loss his next bout to Anthony Njokuani at UFC 145. The Laval native then snapped his two-fight losing skid with a unanimous decision over Sam Stout at UFC 154. Since losing in the first episode of the Ultimate Fighter Live to James Vick via knockout, Daron Cruickshank (12-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has gone undefeated in the UFC with a unanimous decision over Chris Tickle at The Ultimate Fighter Live Finale, and a highlight reel knockout of Henry Martinez at UFC on FOX 5. Prior to joining the UFC, Cruickshank defeated Makdessi’s training partner Mike Ricci  for the Ringside MMA Lightweight championship at Ringside 12 in October of 2011.  The two will square off in a strikers dream match in a “Tristar’s revenge” bout.

A Middleweight showcase between Chris Camozzi (18-5 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and  Camozzi vs RingNick Ring has been added to the card. During his stint of the Ultimate Fighter season 11, Camozzi was forced to withdraw from the competition after suffering a broken jaw in his preliminary bout victory against Victor O’Donnell to get into the house. Camozzi was granted to opportunity to fight on the finale where he picked up a unanimous decision over James Hammortree, then a split decision over Dongi Yang at UFC 121. He was then submitted by Kyle Noke at UFC 127 and subsequently released from the promotion. Camozzi picked a split decision victory outside of the UFC against Joey Villasenor at Shark Fights 15, which granted him another shot in the UFC. Upon his return Camozzi lost a unanimous decision to Francis Carmont at UFC 137, losing two of three rounds, as Camozzi had Carmont in danger late in the third round with a kimura submission. Camozzi bounced back from the loss as he is currently riding a three fight win streak with a guillotine submission over Dustin Jacoby at UFC on FOX 2, a TKO victory over Nick Cantone at UFC on FX 4, and a unanimous decision over Luiz Cane at UFC 153. His opponent Nick Ring (13-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) also an alumni of season 11 of the Ultimate Fighter and also forced to withdraw due to ACL injury after defeating the winner of season Court McGee in the quarterfinals by majority decision. Ring officially made his UFC debut at UFC 127 in February of 2011 with a controversial unanimous decision victory over DEEP Middleweight champion Riki Fukuda. Ring “won” the first two rounds granting him the judges nod, but the MMA community, including UFC President Dana White were baffled by the decision. Ring then ensured that there was no controversy in his next UFC victory, as he submitted at UFC 131. Ring was then handed his first career loss to Tim Boetsch at UFC 135. Ring bounced back from his loss, defeating Court McGee by unanimous decision in a TUF 11 rematch at UFC 149. Undefeated on Canadian soil with 11 victories the Calgary native will attempt to remain that way and derail Camozzi’s win streak.

STRIKEFORCE import Jordan Mein (26-8 MMA, 2-1 SF) will be making his UFCJordan Mein vs. Dan Miller debut at UFC 158. Mein lost his MMA debut in 2006 to Rory MacDonald at the age of 16. Now 23-years-old, Mein has fought 34 times, racking up victories over notable fighters such as, Evangelista Santos, Marius Zaromskis, Joe Riggs, Josh Burkman, and Forest Petz. Mein made his STRIKEFORCE debut in September of 2011 with a TKO victory over Evangelista Santos. Mein then squared off against the much larger Tyron Woodley in a title eliminator bout, where Woodley spent three rounds sitting on Mein, who worked diligently off his back, but would lose a split decision. Mein then won a unanimous decision over Tyler Stinson in January of 2012. With two STRIKEFORCE events being cancelled in a the later part of 2012, Mein returned to the local scene to remain active on November 23rd for the Score Fighting Series 7. He destroyed Forrest Petz in 99-seconds with elbows and knees. His opponent, Brother of Top 10 ranked Lightweight Jim Miller, Dan Miller (14-6-1 MMA, 6-5 UFC) won his first three UFC bouts against Rob Kimmons at UFC Fight Night 15, Matt Horwich at UFC 90, and Jake Rosholt at UFC Fight Night 17. Miller would then go on to lose three consecutive decision bouts against Chael Sonnen at UFC 98, Damian Maia at UFC 109, and Michael Bisping at UFC 114. Miller snapped the losing streak with a ninja choke submission of John Salter at UFC 118, and a split decision over Joe Doerksen at UFC 124. Miller stepped back up in competition losing decisions to Nate Marquardt at UFC 128, and Rousimar Palhares at UFC 134. With the losses Miller made the decision to drop to 170lbs and submitted Ricardo Funch with a guillotine choke at UFC on FX 4 in his Welterweight debut to earn the submission of the night honors. Miller will attempt to remain undefeated at Welterweight and spoil Mein’s UFC debut.

Sarah Kaufman (15-2 MMA, 6-2 SF) will appear on Wednesday’s (Jan. 9th) Kaufman vs Tate UFC 158episode of Ringside Report Radio on TSN 690 with Dave Simon and Kevin McKough to discuss her potential involvement of UFC 158. The former STRIKEFORCE Women’s Bantamweight champion Kaufman has expressed to RingsideReportDOTNET that she would be interested in a rematch against Miesha Tate (13-3 MMA, 6-2 SF). The two fought at the first STRIKEFORCE Challengers card in May of 2009, where Kaufman won a unanimous decision. Both fighters lost first round submissions to UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. Tate losing the STRIKEFORCE title, and Kaufman attempting to regain it. Tate recently defeated Kaufman’s teammate Julie Kedzie with an armbar submission after being beat up for two rounds by Kedzie. Kaufman would like to avenge the loss by her teammate, and face Tate in a bout that has been brewing for some time now, as Kaufman and Tate both felt that Kaufman deserved the title shot over Rousey, when Tate was champion. With the UFC adding a Women’s Bantamweight division to the company, we at Ringside Report Radio/www.ringsidereport.net believe that Kaufman would make a great addition to the roster and should be added to the UFC 158 lineup. If you are interested in seeing Sarah Kaufman versus Miesha Tate at UFC 158 tweet “@mmasarah vs. @MieshaTate for #UFC158 #MakeItHappen” to @danawhite and @ufc.

Weekend in Fights! July 28th Edition

Send to Kindle

This Weekend in Fights! (July 28th, 2012) featured Invicta FC 2 in Kansas City, Elite 1 MMA in Moncton, & Gym Wars 7 in Burlington.

The all-women’s MMA promotion Invicta FC held their second event at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. The event was headlined by Olympic Silver medalist and undefeated mixed martial artist Sara McMann and 20-fight veteran Shayna Baszler. McMann avoided a near knockout and was able to keep her perfect record intact with a unanimous decision over Baszler. Baszler was the superior striker in the first round, but was out muscled by McMann’s prolific wrestling ability in the second, where she almost submitted McMann with a kneebar. McMann was saved by the bell in the final moments of the third round when she was tagged by Baszler with short hook. On wobbly legs McMann was able to clinch Baszler for the remainder of the round to edge Baszler out in a decision.

Alexis Davis dominated Japanese sensation Hitomi Akano with a second round rear-naked choke  submission. Davis bullied Akano in the striking game and stuffed takedown attempts throughout the first round. Davis knocked Akano down in the opening seconds of the second, and scored a takedown where she proceeded to pound away at Akano. Davis violently delivered a series of knees to the body on her way to taking Akano’s back, where she forced her to tap at the 3:41 mark of the round.

The undefeated Japanese sensation Ayaka Hamasaki made her North American debut in impressive fashion. Unlike many Japanese superstars who fail in transitioning to the North American style of MMA, Hamasaki submitted Lacey Schuckman with 15-seconds remaining in the bout. The Jewels champion Hamasaki, worked diligently to bring the bout to the mat as often as possible. Schuckman was able to fight off most of the takedowns and submission attempts, but was caught with an arm bar, forcing her to tap.

STRIKEFORCE veterans Amanda Nunes and Liz Carmouche both picked up rear-naked choke submissions in their bouts. Nunes avoided being submitted herself by Raquel Pa’aluhi, when Pa’aluhi attempted to transition from rear-naked choke to arm bar. Nunes was able to escape and lock in her own rear-naked choke for the win. Carmouche began her bout with Kaitlin Young in striking war, but ended the bout in the second via submission. Carmouche landed a beautiful striking combination, and slammed Young the ground, where she would transition multiple times to eventually get Young’s back. Once in that position Carmouche delivered some heel kicks to setup the rear-naked choke and force the tap. (Full Invicta FC 2 event results below.)

Elite 1 MMA Redemption took place at the Redball Internet Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick. In the main event Welterweight champion Richard Arsenault squared off against Instinct MMA, Ringside MMA, W-1 MMA, and Aggression MMA veteran Ricky Goodall. The two Welterweights went back and forth in an all out war for five rounds, with Arsenault picking up rounds one, two and five, and Goodall picking up round three and four. All three judges rendered a unanimous decision of 48-47 Richard Arsenault who retains the championship.

The card also featured many familiar names to the Canadian and Quebec MMA scene with  Nabil Khatib, Matt MacGrath, and Jesse Ronson on the card. Team Bushido & Tristar’s Nabil Khatib faced Canadian journeyman and recent Bellator fighter Matt MacGrath. From the minute that MacGrath scored an early takedown on Khatib it was evident that something was wrong. During a transition attempt from MacGrath, the referee halted the action to check on a Khatib’s condition. Khatib ensured the referee that he was fine and the action continued for a short period of time. While in side control MacGrath landed a few punches and elbows before Khatib tapped out due to injury at the 73-second mark of the first round.

In a rematch from his first pro bout in 2009 Jesse Ronson defeated Eric St-Pierre. The AM Ford Fight Night Lightweight champion Ronson repeated his actions from three years ago by ending the bout with a knockout at an Elite 1 MMA event. (Full Elite 1 MMA: Remdemption event results below.)

Gym Wars 7 was held at the UFAI gym in Burlington, Vermont on Saturday night. The card featured two amateur MMA, two submission grappling bouts, and four Muay Thai bouts featuring fighters from various fight camps including UFAI, Contenders Gym, Villari’s Gym, Underdog BJJ, Martial Way, Montpellier BJJ, VTMA and others. Each bout had a decisive winner as none of the bouts made it to the judges score cards. In the main event, featherweight Muay Thai fighters Jesse Mabe and Ben McAllister squared off in a contenders bout. Mabe forced the referee to call a halt to the action at 2:45 of the first round declaring him the winner via TKO. In the only pure knockout of the night, Welterweight Nic Gomez made short work of  Billy Walsh when he connected with a head kick 39 seconds into the bout, possibly breaking Walsh’s jaw in the process.

The submission grappling bouts are one 10 minute round. Of the two featured bouts, both Ricky Jorge  and Chris Gallipo choked out their opponents in the submission grappling bouts of the evening. Jorge submitted Billy Thurston at6:12, and Gallipo submitted Dennis Sherman in 61 seconds.
Both MMA bouts ended via submission as Joshua Davies defeated Bruce Richards with an arm triangle choke early in the third round, and Craig Bridge defeated Larry LaBreque, Jr. with a rear-naked choke in the opening frame of their bout. (Full Gym Wars 7 event results below.)

Anarchy 1: Exile July 14th

Send to Kindle

Xtreme Combat Promotion and UFAI LLC make Vermont MMA history on July 14th by being the first to co-promote an event. Cathy Fitzgerald (XCP) and Chris Ballard (UFAI LLC) have joined forces to produce a super card unlike their individual events. Anarchy 1: Exile takes place at Collins Perley Complex in Saint Albans, Vermont. The amateur MMA event features a stacked 15-bout card with championship bouts in the Bantamweight, Featherweight, Lightweight,  Middleweight, and Light Heavyweight divisions, and much more as the card promises an action packed night for MMA fans.

UFC Bantamweight/Flyweight competitor Chris “Kamikaze” Cariaso (@chriscariasomma) (13-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC, 1-1 WEC, 2-0 SF) will be fighting against Josh Ferguson on July 11th on UFC on FUEL TV 4. Cariaso will be on hand for the festivities for a meet & greet at 5:30om prior to the event and will serve as a special guest judge. Cariaso will also be doing a seminar at UFAI1891 Williston Rd, South Burlington on Sunday, July 15th from 3:30pm-6:30pm $75 per person.

In the main event, reigning Featherweight champion Matt Durling (5-0) will be defending his title against undefeated Christopher Johnson (5-0). Durling splits his time between Contenders Gym and FLOW BJJ under the tutelage of Dan Caulfield and his boxing coach Joe Solonzaski. The 2011 Vermont Golden Gloves winner combines his prolific standup with his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills and wrestling experience he gained while attending Keene High School to be the well rounded fighter he is. His challenger, 22-year-old Chris Johnson plans on bringing the fight to him. With a background in boxing, Johnson started boxing at the age of 10 at Steve’s School of Boxing in Pennsylvania. In order to pursue an MMA career, Johnson knew he needed to train in wrestling, Muay Thai, Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, so he joined Combat Fitness in Winooski. With only 4-years of BJJ training Johnson won two championships at the Vermont Open BJJ competition in the 140lbs-150lbs Gi division. With an unblemished record Johnson wants to test his skills in various fight circuits, and would eventually own and operate his own MMA gym, but isn’t worrying about that at this moment. “I will win the fight by knockout or submission.” said Johnson. With both fighters possessing great skill sets, and both having yet to taste defeat, nor do each of the want to, this championship bout promises to bring fireworks.

The other four Anarchy championship bouts on the card will be to determine  inaugural champions. The Middleweight championship is up for grabs as knockout artist Alex Laush squares off against reigning and defending Burlington Brawl Middleweight champion Eric Bruno. Laush, the VMTA 185lb State Thai Boxing Champion, is a product of UFAI and most recently American Top Team in Coconut Creek Florida. Winning all four of his amateur Muay Thai bouts by knockout, and a semifinalist in the 2010 Southeast Asian Grappling Games in Phuket, Thailand he’s ready for his second amateur MMA bout. Known as one of the best fighters in the area, his opponent Eric Bruno trains out of Rail City MMA in Saint Albans under the tutelage of Tom Murphy and Orlando Quiroz. With only one blemish on his record in seven fights, Bruno has defended his Burlington Brawl Middleweight championship three times and plans to add more gold to his collection when these two Middleweights collide.

A Lightweight champion will be determined  as Northeast Assassin’s Tyler Jacques will take on “The All American Nightmare” Daniel J. Carpenter. A huge fan of Mike Tyson, Carpenter has been boxing since he could stand. He has Spent the last five years kickboxing with John Paris, and is also proficient Shotokan Karate under the tutelage of Tim Goad at Dynamic Defense DoJo in Newport. With 3-0-1 record Carpenter plans on keeping his win streak alive and capturing gold.  “I want to be the next XCP Lightweight champ and hope to go pro some time after that.” said Carpenter.  When he isn’t training or bashing heads in, Carpenter a father of three enjoys playing with his children Jordan, Corine and baby Ryan. With his children as motivation, Carpenter championship aspirations are unstoppable, but standing across the cage from  him is Tyler Jacques, who has other plans. Training with Kiel Santelli and Kevin Coon and the Northeast Assassins MMA team in Bennington, Vermont,  21-year-old Jacques fighting on the amateur circuit for 15-months. With only two blemishes on his record coming by way of judges decision, Jacques will ensure that the bout ends before ends that in order to claim the title.

Current Bantamweight champion Shamel Tyler will be out of action for a year due to an injury sustained while jumping out of the cage during his post fight celebration. With Tyler unable to compete, he was forced to relinquish his title and a new Bantamweight champion will be crowned. Current Burlington Brawl Bantamweight champion Jay McLean is slated to face “King” James McMillan;  However this bout is not officially confirmed.

Also not officially confirmed is the Light Heavyweight championship bout between Ross Hennessy and Justin Fitzsimmons. The 15-bout card also features Vermont MMA scene standouts Connor McKenna and Chris Rooney as well as two students of TUF Alumni and STRIKEFORCE veteran Marc Stevens in Montoyia Swilling and Jake Bohn training out of Jiu Jitsu Nation in Watertown, New York.

Barre Vermont native Cathy Fitzgerald transitioned form a Offender Reentry Coordinator into an MMA Promoter & Matchmaker. Although Fitzgerald loved her job she had a different calling in life. Expand it she did, by creating Xtreme Combat Promotions to produce monthly MMA events to showcase local fighters, and expose MMA to the Vermont populous like never before.

Her partner in this venture is none other that United Fighting Arts Institute’s Kru Chris Ballard. Ballard is no stranger to martial arts or promoting on his own events. Inevitably the bout went to the judges score cards, with Amoussou picking up the split decision victory. Amoussou will now take on Bryan Baker later this year to claim the $100,000 and to determine who will face Ben Askren.

In the premiere Women’s bout of the evening #1 ranked fighter Megumi Fujii squared off against the #2 ranked fighter Jessica Aguilar. Aguilar would take home the unanimous decision victory in a highly debatable call from the judges. All three rounds were very close, but Aguilar counter struck the Japanese phenom, with boxing to out point and avoid submission attempts.

Richard Hale punched his ticket into the Season 7 Light Heavyweight tournament with a 38 submission due to punches ever Josh Burns. Hale will face Beau Tribolet in the opening round on June 22nd at Bellator 71.

Mark Holata  also punched his ticket into a Bellator tournament as qualified he qualified for the Bellator Season 7 Heavyweight Tournament when he submitted Abe Wagner midway through the first round with an achilles lock. In the other Heavyweight bout of the evening,  one that was featured on the poster was Kevin Asplund versus Ron Sparks never took place. (Full Bellator 69 event results below.)

Also on Friday night Cage Fighting Championship held their 21st event in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The main event featured Bellator & MFC veteran Jesse Juarez versus Robert Whitaker in Welterweight action.  After three rounds Juarez got the nod from the judges to take home the victory. Bob Sapp was featured on the card, his second fight in a week, and his second throwaway paycheck collecting under a minute TKO loss. Not only did he lose the bout in the first minute like he did last week, but lost the bout in 12 seconds. UFC, DREAM, STRIKEFORCE, Sengoku, and M-1 veteran Jeff Monson was also on the card. Monson fought for the second time in a month, picking up a unanimous decision victory over Jim Yorke. (Full CFC 21 event results below.)

UFC veteran Tim Hague headlined Prestige FC IV at the Casman Centre in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Hague display a huge amount of toughness against Mike Hackert in a three round war, but it was Hackert who would walk away with the “W”. Hackert used a variety of strikes to bloody up Hague, out striking him throughout all three rounds for the unanimous decision. Also on the card was Ringside MMA veteran David Lafond, who  picked up his second career win  with a rear-naked choke submission over Jon Cowan with only 12-seconds remaining in the first round. (Full Prestige FC IV event results below.)

The biggest attraction of the weekend was the STRIKEFORCE World Heavyweight Grand Prix form HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The tournament which began in February of 2011 finally concluded.

Daniel Cormier claimed the STRIKEFORCE Grand Prix title after a five round slugfest with Josh Barnett  that went to the judges score cards. With Barnett breaking his hand in the first round, the bout was very one-sided in favor of Cormier. Despite Barnett’s attacks both standing and on the ground, Cormier was able to escape them, stay very active on his feet. Cormier bloodied up Barnett with some ground and pound and almost finished the bout with a high kick and a flurry of punches. After the five rounds ended Cormier was declared the victor unanimously.

STRIKEFORCE Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez had his rubber match with Josh Thomson. Both fighters went toe-to-toe with Thompson looking like he was going home with the strap. Thompson controlled the majority of the first round, poked Melendez in the eye three times during the bout, and almost submitted Melendez with a rear-naked choke in the fourth.  However, Melendez was able to fight off and stay active enough with strikes and take downs to pick up the split decision.

Mike Kyle did a lot of bitching and complaining prior to this bout about getting a shot at the vacant STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight title, but now he won’t have to worry as he will not be getting that shot, because Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante submitted him in 33-seconds with a  guillotine choke. (Full STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight Grand Prix: Barnett vs. Cormier event results below.)

Rumble Time Promotion or RTP held their ninth event at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, Missouri on Saturday night. The main event featured former UFC and WEC veteran Will Campuzano. Weekend in Fights! April 14th Edition

Send to Kindle

This Weekend in Fights! (April 14th, 2012) saw the return of the UFC for the first time in 43 days, with UFC on FUEL TV 2 in Stockholm, Sweden, a new Bellator Bantamweight champion was crowned in Atlantic City, as well as action from Cage Warriors in Jordan, EFC Africa in South Africa,  XFC in Tennessee, and Aggression Fighting Championship and AM Ford Fight Night 2012 in British Columbia.

Cage Warriors kicked off this weekend in fights on Thursday with Cage Warriors Fight Night 5: Brents vs. Linderman.  CWFN 5 took place at the New Boxing Arena in Amman, Jordan and was broadcast on MMAJunkie.com. In the main event of the card, D.J. Linderman, who lost two weeks ago at Instinct MMA 3, edged out Bobby Brents with a unanimous decision on two weeks notice. Even though he was giving up almost 25 pounds, Linderman bloodied the much larger Brents’ nose in the first round, but the action slowed down in the second. In the final frame, Linderman picked apart Brents with striking combinations to get the nod.

The Cage Warriors Middleweight tournament semifinals took place, with Pavel Kusch and Victor Cheng advancing to the finals for the vacant Cage Warriors Middleweight title. Kusch made short work of John Phillips with a 25 second heel hook submission, the submission specialist has 13 wins with 13 submissions. On the other side Victor Cheng went the distance against Faycal Hucin to  pick up the unanimous decision.  (Full Cage Warriors Fight Night 5: Linderman vs. Brents event results below.)

The action continued on Friday night with Bellator 65 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Emenating from Boardwalk Hall and broadcasting on MTV 2 and Spike.com, Bellator crowned a new Bantamweight champion in the main event. The main event featured the first title defense of Bellator Bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky, as he took on the winner of Bellator Season 5 Bantamweight tournament, Eduardo Dantas. Both fighters came out full throttle, in a bout that didn’t make it past the second round. Dantas completely dominated Makovsky, with an extremely impressive performance both off his back and in mount. Dantas was able to counter Makovsky’s take down attempt, and gain top position. From the mount, Dantas rained down on Makovsky, with a series of blows, followed up with an arm triangle choke. Despite his best efforts to grip his own leg and avoid the submission, Dantas was able to apply enough pressure to force Makovsky unconscious, and claim the title.

In the Featherweight tournament semifinal match up, Daniel Straus handed Mike Corey his first ever loss in Bellator. In the three round affair, Straus displayed his improved stand up, putting the beat down and bloodied up Corey in the first. However, Corey was able to regain his composure in the second, as he scored a take down and controlled most of the round. Straus continued to tee-off on Corey in the third, with punch and knee combinations. Both fighters ended the bout, swinging violently at each other, perhaps in desperation, or an attempt to woo the judges; ultimately, Straus was awarded the bout.

Bellator kicked off the Season 6 Bantamweight tournament with Luis Nogueira and Marcos Galvao both picking up unanimous decision victories to advance to the semifinals. Nogueira counter struck his opponent, Alexis Vila, staying away from his powerful right hand in order to pick the win. Glavao impose his will as he secured take downs, attempted submissions and connected with devastating power punches to pick up the win of Ed West. (Full Bellator 65 event results below.)

XFC 17: Apocalypse took place at the Oman Arena in Jackson, Tennessee and was broadcast on HDNet on Friday. In his second appearance for the promotion, American Top Team’s Eric Reynolds continued winning streak and snapped Luciano Dos Santos three fight win streak, in a three round stand up war, that saw Reynolds come out the victor in the main event.

Marlon Moraes had an early night when he came out swinging with devastating left hands, knocking out Jarrod Card in just 48 seconds. The one armed man, Nick Newell continued his miraculous undefeated streak, with a majority decision over Chris Coggins. The congenital amputee with just one fully-formed arm, Newell now improves to 7-0. Felice Herrig bounced back from her December 2, XFC 15 unanimous decision loss to Carla Esparza, with a unanimous decision victory of her own over Patricia Vidonic.  (Full XFC 17: Apocalypse event results below.)

Also on Friday, African based promotion Extreme Fighting Championship held their thirteenth even at the GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World, in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. IN a 12 bout card, seven bouts ended with slick submissions, three by TKO and two decisions. One of the three TKO’s on the night came in the main event, which saw Jadyson Costa (8-12-1)captured the EFC Africa Welterweight title by defeating then champion Dallas Jakobi (6-3) with a fourth round TKO. (Full EFC Africa 13 event results below.)

The UFC kicked off Saturday’s fights in the afternoon, with UFC on FUEL TV 2, at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. Hometown hero, Alexander Gustafsson headlined the event against heavy handed Brazilian striker Thiago Silva. Due to the Swedish Athletic Commission rules, the bout was on three rounds, as opposed to the new UFC standard five round main events. After dropping Silva in the first round with an uppercut, Gustafsson landed some ground and pound, but was unable to finish Silva. However, the knockdown set the pace for the remainder of the bout, as Gustafsson was able to control Silva. Silva managed to land some heavy strikes, but none effective enough to give him control. Gustafsson’s conditioning proved to be better than Silva, as he continued to connect with punches and kicks. Silva attempted to finish the bout in the third round, chasing Gustafsson with some power punches to no avail. Gustafsson picked up the unanimous decision victory.

In the co-main event of the evening Brian Stann made short work of Alessio Sakara with a combination of knees punches to the head,  dropping Sakara to the mat. Stann began his ground and pound assault, only to be pulled into Sakara’s guard. Breaking free, Stann connected with three solid elbows rendering Sakara unconscious.

Dennis Siver made a successful debut at Featherweight with a unanimous decision victory over Deigo Nunes. In a very stand up heavy match up, both fighters connected with  numerous flurries of punches and knees threw the bout in the clinch. Even with his good take down defense, cutting Siver open, and dropping him to a knee, Nunes failed to win the bout in the eyes of the judges in a very close bout.

In a huge upset of the night Afghani born, product of Golden Glory, Siyar Bahadurzada knocked out Paulo Thiago in his UFC debut in just 42 seconds. Winning the “Knockout of the Night” honors, Bahadurzada landed a  big right hand that cause Thiago to hit mat face first.

The “Fight of the Night” went to Bantamweights, Brad Pickett and Damacio Page in an instant classic. Both fighters went at each other from the opening bell with Pickett ultimately getting the submission victory in the second round. The first round was highly contested back and fourth action with both connecting with heavy strikes. The fast pace action continued into the second round. With Page dazed from all on shots, Pickett took advantage,  sinking his hooks in and applying the rear-naked choke, forcing page to tap.

In a Welterweight match up, John “The One” Maguire squared off against DaMarques Johnson. Sporting the pink and black, cause Bret Hart is his hero, MaGuire was losing the stand up war, as he ate a lot a clearly painful leg kicks from Johnson. Taking it to the mat, Maguire worked his Jiu-Jitsu game and attempted an omoplata, armbar, guillotine choke and rear-naked choke, all unsuccessfully.  In the second round, Maguire took Johnson down with ease, but was on the receiving end of some elbows. Unable to get off his back, Johnson grabbed Maguire’s arm for a kimura, but Maguire snatched Johnson’s arm and wrenched a beautiful arm bar, forcing Johnson to tap in the “Submission of the Night.”

Tristar Gym’s Francis Carmont averted disaster, after being man handled in the first round by Magnus Cedenblad. With his hooks in, Cedenblad had Carmont’s back worked for the rear-naked choke in the first round. Early in the second round, after landing a take down, Carmont rained down on Cedenblad with relentless ground and pound punches and elbows from mount position forcing Cedenblad giving up his back. Carmont would take advantage and sink in a rear-naked choke to score the victory in under two minutes.(Full UFC on FUEL TV 2 event results below.)

The AFC was formed as a merger between three of Canada’s premier fight promotions Aggression MMA, Armageddon Fighting Championships, and AX Combat, to be known as Aggression Fighting Championship. With the win, Hayes (17-4) is now riding a five-fight win streak and is 9-1 in his past 10 fights. In an un-sportsman like conduct, Sheila Gaff  knockout Jennifer Maia in 10 seconds, as Maia attempted to touch gloves, but was met with a punch. (Full CWFN 4 event results below.)

After losing the fight, Hervey grabbed the mic and told Ricci that he was a striker, and his lay and prey style sucked. In the main event of the evening, Paul Cheng made quick work of Eric Barrak, as he rushed him with strikes, took him down, and force him to verbally submit. Weekend in Fights! March 10th Edition

Send to Kindle

This Weekend in Fights! (March 10th) featured the return of Bellator with their 6th Season, that included the opening round of the new Featherweight tournament, as well as the Featherweight championship match between champion Joe Warren and Season 5 tournament winner Pat Curran. Ken Pavia’s Super Fight League in India premiered their inaugural show with James Thompson and Bob Sapp in the main event. King of the Cage held two events this weekend, one in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the other in Edmonton, Alberta, and former UFC Lightweight competitor Rob Emerson picked up a win at Tachi Palace Fights. Mirko Cro Cop returned to kickboxing, and although not “official” fights, 16 bouts took place on the premiere  of The Ultimate Fighter Season 15 Friday night, one of which included former Ringside MMA Lightweight champion Daron Cruickshank. (TUF 15 Episode 1 results click here.)

On Friday Bellator 60 took place at The Venue at Horseshoe Hammond, in  Hammond, Indiana and a new champion was crowned. Pat Curran dismantled Joe Warren in a very one-sided beat down that ended in the third round. Curran rocked Warren early in the first round with  knees, but Warren was able to regain his composure in the second. In the third, Curran cornered Warren against the cage and just unleashed with a relentless barrage of punch and knee combinations  that had Warren out on his feet. Curran is now the new Bellator Featherweight champion. His next challenge is to be determined with the conclusion of the new Featherweight tournament that started on the same card. Alexandre Bezerra and Marlon Sandro picked up rear-naked choke submission victories in their quarter final match ups. Bezerra defeated Kenny Foster with only three seconds left in the second round, and Sandro made short work of Roberto Vargas in the first round. Mike Corey upset Ronnie Mann in a three round war, to advance to the semi finals. Daniel Straus advanced as well with a decision over previously undefeated Jeremy Spoon. Former UFC Heavyweight Sean McCorkle made quick work of (Big Dick) Richard White with a neck crank in 1:02 of the first round; McCorkle is now riding a six fight win streak since being cut from the UFC. (Full Bellator 60 event results below.)

Also on Friday, former UFC Lightweight Rob Emerson (12-10) took on  Savant Young (10-9) in the co-main event of Tachi Palace Fights 12 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino, in Lemoore, Califormia. Emerson picked up the win with a rear naked choke submission late in the third round, with the victory Emerson is 3-1 since being cut from the UFC after losing to Nik Lentz in March of 2010. (Full TPF 12 event results below.)

On Saturday Super Fight League held their premiere event at the Andheri Sports Complex, in Mumbai, India. The card was headlined with a Super Heavyweight bout between Bob Sapp (11-11) and James Thompson (17-14). Thompson would have an early night as Sapp submitted due to a leg injury in under two minutes. The card also featured another Super Heavyweight bout as Jimmy Ambriz (16-18) knocked out Satish Jamia in just 14 seconds. Former UFC Light Heavyweight Xavier Foupa-Pokam (22-17) picked up a TKO victory over Joey Guel, when the doctor refused to allow Guel to continue into the second round. (Full SFL 1 event results below.)

King of the Cage Breakthrough took place at the River Spirit Event Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday night. The event was headlined by former UFC Light Heavyweight David Heath (16-7) versus Sidiah Parker. Heath destroyed Parker in the second round by TKO. (Full KOTC – Breakthrough event results below.)

Just four weeks after picking up a first round submission victory over Elliot Duff at Aggression MMA 9 on February 11th, Canadian submission specialist Luke Harris (8-1) was back at it on Saturday night at the Mirage Banquet Hall, Edmonton, Alberta, for King of the Cage Canada – Infamy. Harris picked up another first round submission victory over Brandon MacArthur (6-19) with an arm bar late in the round. (Full KOTC-Infamy event results below.)

The legendary Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic retired from MMA in November 2011, after losing to Roy Nelson at UFC 137, but he didn’t retire from kickboxing. Cro Cop returned to his  kickboxing roots for the first time since 2003, in a final farewell bout in his home country of Croatia. The event was dubbed: “K-1 Cro Cop Final Fight” where he (Filipovic) took on another kickboxing legend, Ray Sefo. Filipovic defeated Sefo by unanimous decision, retiring with his head held high. He retires with a 17-7 Kickboxing and 27-10 MMA records.  (Full K-1: Cro Cop Final Fight event results below.)
