At UFC 136 in Houston, Texas the world finally got the “Answer” of who the best Lightweight fighter in the world is, when Frankie Edgar avenged his only blemishes on his record by knocking out Gray Maynard in the fourth round. Maynard repeated his aggressive style of coming out strong and dangerous in the first, but using his great striking Edgar proceeded to pick a part Maynard and dropped him in the fourth causing the referee to call the action when Maynard was not defending himself. UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo retained his championship against Kenny Florian by keeping the fight standing. It was evident that the weight cut took its toll on Florian as he was unsuccessful in his take down attempts. Trash talking Chael Sonnen racked up another win in his pursuit to get back in title contention over Brian Stann. After being away from the cage for over a year Sonnen showed no cage rust and submitted Stann in the second round. (Full UFC 136 event results below.)

This fight was supposed to be at Light-Heavyweight but Evan Nedd was over the 205 lbs. weight-limit. Stahinja Gavrilovic landed a heavy knee strike and Nedd landed a big punch in a first round that consisted of both fighters looking for a stand-up advantage.

Strahinja Gavrilovic landed some heavy strikes in the second stanza. Gavrilovic was controlling the action until he attempted a standing guillotine and was taken down and put on his back. Evan Nedd tried to land some ground and pound from side-control but Gavrilovic was able to get back to his feet and avoid any punishment.

Gavrilovic landed a huge uppercut in the third round but Nedd continued to move forward. Nedd managed to score a takedown and passed from side-control into full mount with 3 minutes remaining in the round. Gavrilovic rolled out of the dangerous position and got to his feet and landed a huge kick to the body. Evan Nedd continued to move forward and defended all takedown attempts but took the worst of the stand-up exchanges.

Strahinja Gavrilovic def. Evan Nedd via split-decision (30-27, 29-28, 28-29)

Alex Gutierrez (0-0) v. Jason Courchesne (1-0) (Welterweights)

Jason Courchesnse landed a flurry of knees from the Muay-Thai clinch and scored a takedown in the first round. Courchesne was able to pass into a full-mount and landed some big punches and elbows. Courchesne went for the arm-bar from the mount position and secured it tightly, forcing Alex Gutierrez into submission.

Jason Courchesne def. Alex Gutierrez via submission (arm-bar) at 3:15 in Round 1

Chris Kelades (4-0) v. Dimitri Waardenburg (7-5) (Bantamweights)

Waardenburg and Kelades spent a good portion of the first round clinching against the fence until Kelades scored a takedown. Waardenburg swept Kelades and landed in his guard but Kelades fought to get to his feet and took Waardenburg back down to the mat.

Waardenburg landed a big head kick that dropped Kelades early in the second round but Kelades composed himself and kept Waardenburg in his guard and managed to get back to his feet. Kelades scored a takedown of his own and worked some ground and pound from inside Waardenburg’s guard. Kelades attempted an anaconda choke but Waardenburg escaped and wound up in Kelades’ guard to end the round.

Waardenburg landed a solid kick to the body that was answered with a head kick by Kelades. Kelades scored a takedown and worked his ground and pound and attempted a rear-naked choke as time expired in the final round.

Chris Kelades def. Dimitri Waardenburg via split-decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)

Yannick Duval (0-0) v. Guy Poulin (0-0) (Welterweights)

This fight was originally scheduled for the preliminary card but was moved up due to time constraints. Yannick Duval attempted a standing guillotine and was taken down by Guy Poulin who improved into full-mount and landed some heavy punches to force the referee to intervene.

Guy Poulin def. Yannick Duval via TKO (punches) at 3:13 in Round 1

William Sriyapai (12-5) v. Martin Grandmont (11-5) (Welterweights)

Martin Grandmont scored a perfect head-kick that knocked out William Sriyapai and sent the pro- Grandmont crowd into a frenzy.

Martin Grandmont def. William Sriyapai via KO (head-kick) at 2:03 in Round 1

Travis Cox (6-9-1) v. Derek Gauthier (6-3) (Lightweights)

Cox scored an early takedown but Gauthier got back to his feet and landed some good punches and kicks. Cox scored another takedown but Gauthier again scrambled to his feet and controlled the stand-up exchanges.

In the second round, Gauthier continued to land solid leg kicks on Travis Cox. Cox clinched Gauthier against the cage and looked for a single-leg takedown. Gauthier reversed the position and locked in a kimura that forced Travis Cox to submit as soon as it was applied.

Derek Gauthier def. Travis Cox via submission (kimura) at 2:25 in Round 2

Eric “Butterbean” Esch (14-8-1) v. Eric Barrak (0-0) (Heavyweights)

Butterbean and Barrak both displayed their boxing backgrounds with a first round that started as a boxing match. Butterbean eventually clinched up Barrak and attempted a standing guillotine but Barrak shook him off and Butterbean tripped down to the mat. Barrak attempted to finish the fight, landing some big punches but Butterbean managed to get back to his feet, much to the crowd’s delight. Barrak clinched Butterbean against the fence but was unable to do much damage. Butterbean chased down Eric Barrak and taunted him as he backpedaled in the closing seconds of the first round.

Butterbean continued to stalk Eric Barrak in the second round, amidst chants of “Butterbean! Butterbean!” Barrak scored some jabs that had little effect. Butterbean landed a big knee to the face of Barrak in a clinch but Barrak survived and pushed Butterbean against the cage. The referee separated the two fighters after some inactivity against the cage and Butterbean pushed forward looking to land a big punch. Barrak continued to land jabs on Butterbean that caused his nose to start to bleed.

The final round saw Barrak continue to land some jabs but Butterbean kept pressing forward and taunting his opponent. Butterbean clinched Barrak against the cage and worked his body and head with some dirty-boxing. After some inactivity, the fighters were separated but again found themselves clinched up. Barrak landed a punch that knocked Butterbean to the mat with just over two minutes remaining in the bout. Barrak synched in a guillotine choke and Butterbean tapped out.

Eric Barrak def. Eric “Butterbean” Esch via submission (guillotine) at 2:56 in Round 3

Crafton Wallace (18-5-1) v. Patrick Cote (15-7) (Middleweights)

Patrick Cote landed a solid uppercut early in the first round that rocked Crafton Wallace. Cote landed more punches before a big slam takedown. Cote landed in side-control but the referee quickly intervened as Wallace appeared to have broken his leg on the way down with the slam.

Patrick Cote def. Crafton Wallace via TKO (doctor stoppage/ knee injury) at 1:36 in Round 1

Houston Alexander (13-6) v. Steve Bosse (8-1) (Light-Heavyweights)

Steve Bosse landed some right hands in a clinch with Alexander in the opening minute of the bout. Alexander was able to score a takedown but Bosse quickly got back to his feet. Bosse landed some knees in the clinch and a solid right hand. Bosse controlled the pace, avoiding Alexander’s punches and landing some good punches to the head and knees to the body. Bosse and Alexander swung for the fences and landed some big punches as the first round came to a close.

Bosse landed some heavy punches in the first minute of the round. Bosse scored a takedown and landed some good left hands from half-guard. Houston Alexander escaped the position and got back to his feet to be met with another solid right hand by Bosse. Steve Bosse scored another single-leg takedown and landed more left hands on Alexander. Houston Alexander was able to get back to his feet and attempted a guillotine choke but Bosse pulled his head out and escaped. Bosse landed some elbows on top of Alexander. Inexplicably referee Philippe Chartier stood up the two combatants while Bosse was in a dominant position. Steve Bosse scored a huge punch that knocked Alexander off his feet and out of consciousness.

October 7th at the Centre d’Excellence Sports Rousseau in Boisbriand, just 35 minutes north of Montreal, Instinct MMA is planning to knockout Quebec fans with a star studded card. A fight card with a triple main event featuring UFC veterans Pat Cote, Houston Alexander and pop icon Eric “Butterbean” Esch is just the beginning.

Former North American Hockey League enforcer and Quebec MMA fan favorite Steve Bosse (8-1) who has fought in every promotion in Quebec, including TKO, Ringside MMA, W-1, and the MFL. With notable wins over Craig Brown, Mychael Clark, and Marvin Eastman, Bosse puts his six fight win streak on the line when he headlines the event against Houston Alexander.

Houston Alexander (13-6) may always be remembered for knocking out Keith Jardine in his UFC debut, but now outside of the octagon, he is riding a four fight win streak with notable wins over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, and Razak Al-Hassan in his last bout on August 13th in Albuquerque, New Mexico at MMA Fight Pit: Genesis. Alexander is definitely Bosse’s toughest test to date, but with two sluggers this bout promises to be nothing short of spectacular.

Former UFC middleweight title challenger Patrick “The Predator” Cote (15-7)is riding a 2 fight win streak since being cut from the UFC, with victories over Kalib Starnes and Todd Brown for Ringside MMA. A man who still considers himself a UFC fighter, Cote signed a fight deal in hopes to return to the Octagon by December. Cote will take on UFC and STRIKEFORCE veteran Crafton Wallace (18-5-1) who may be coming off two tough loses in a row, yet both dangerous on his feet and on the ground, as he has only gone the distance twice in 24 fights.

5-o Heavyweight Boxing sensation Eric Barrak will make his MMA debut on the card, as Patry continues to use crossover athletes in his promotions (i.e. Steve Bosse) to appeal to the masses. Barrak’s opponent is none other that Bart Gunn’s Wrestlemania 15 opponent Eric “Butterbean” Esch! Super Heavyweight fighter Butterbean has done it all, he beat up Johnny Knoxville in a department store, and went 77-8-4 as a Pro Boxer capturing the IBA Super-Heavyweight Champion and the WAA Heavyweight title. He went 3-4 fighting in K-1 as a Pro Kickboxer, and is now strictly fighting in MMA he’s gone 17-8-1 since debuting in 2003. Butterbean has his own reality TV show debuting this month on the Discovery Channel entitled Big Law: Deputy Butterbean, where he is followed performing his duties as a Reserve Sheriff’s Deputy in hometown of Jasper, Alabama. Barrak has finished his last four boxing matches in the first round by stoppage, but it will be a tough test in the transition to MMA against the crafty veteran like Butterbean who has eight submissions to his credit.

The promotion plans on putting on many exciting bouts in every division from Flyweights to Heavyweights! This card however, will also feature a bantamweight showdown between stand up specialists Dimitri Waardenburg and Syd Barnier, and Travis Cox versus Derek Gauthier. Other rumored fighters on the card are Guillaume Vigneau, Guillaume Lamarche, Yan Pellerin, Shawn Davidson and many more.

In front of an Ultimate Fighting Championship record crowd of 55,000 in Toronto’s Roger Centre, Canada’s own Georges St-Pierre for the second straight fight left jabbed his way to successfully defend his welterweight championship at UFC 129.

GSP was able to score a few takedowns, but pretty much the whole fight was kept standing. GSP was a lot more cautious against Jake Shields than his fight at UFC: 124. GSP did score the more impressive strikes, however out of respect for Shields’ ability to defend on the ground GSP did not go for the finish.

Shockingly in the fourth round Shields left GSP a bloody mess. Shields nailed a mean right that had GSP telling his corner, “I can’t seez out of my left.” With only a round left, GSP swag wildly with his right and missed quite a lot. While GSP did not win every round, he did more than Shields to get his hand raised. Surprisingly, fans booed near the end of the fight.

In one of the special features on the DVD, Super 7: Q & A with all UFC Champions, Joe Rogan questions Anderson Silva about the talk of a potential super-fight against GSP. Silva admits that GSP along with B.J. Penn are the best in the world and fights against them are Dana White’s decision, “not mine.”

The behind-the-scenes extras show how UFC had to put together their biggest setup ever. Getting the venue ready in five days was quite tricky with about 1000 people working on the setup. GSP is shown arriving to the venue earlier in the day talking about how nervous he was but very honoured to be the main event of the biggest UFC show ever. There is no post-fight interviews with Shields or GSP, but there is footage of GSP’s trainer Firas Zahabi telling Shields he was the best challenge GSP ever had.

In what was deemed the Fight Of The Night, Mark Hominick was left bloody and a disgusting hematoma on his forehead after coming up short in his battle with UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Hominick did give Aldo his greatest challenge to date, but in the end Aldo proved that he is not only deadly on the ground and with his kicks, but his fists are also equally strong.

In his last fight in mixed martial arts, UFC legend Randy Couture went down to a devastating jump head kick by Lyoto Machida early in the second round. Couture looked frustrated early in round one trying to figure out how to takedown Machida. A slight opening was all Machida needed to deliver the same kind of knockout Silva delivered at UFC: 126.

Despite what many fans have said about the main event outcome, UFC 129 features some fantastic back-and-forth grappling battles, bloody wars and impressive submissions. UFC gives fans so much more with the addition of French commentating of the entire event with Patrick Cote and Jean-Paul Chartrand, all the prelim fights, and a special look into Couture’s training for his final fight.

If you’re an MMA fan this DVD should be in your collection.
