Quebec’s #1 amateur MMA promotion returns on Saturday February 16th, 2013 for Victory MMA 8: Bulletproof at the Theatre Plaza inVMMA 8 Montreal. The event will be hosted by Ringside Report Radio’s Kevin “Big Tuna” McKough. A 16-bout card is set with four championships on the line including a Bantamweight title defense and new champions in the Light Heavyweight, Lightweight and Featherweight divisions.

The Victory MMA Bantamweight champion Kevin Chauvette will be featured in the main event defending his title against Dwayne Durel. This will be Chauvette’s first title defense since winning the strap at Victory MMA 5 in March of 2012.

The co-main event will determine an interim Light Heavyweight champion now that former champion Adam Dyczka is unable to compete due to injury. McGowan’s MMA/Victory Training Centre’s Chris Cleveland squares off against Gladiateur Fight Club de Sorel’s  Mathieu Langlais.

After coming up short in his first attempt at the Lightweight title at Victory MMA 6 in May of 2012 in an armbar submission loss to then champion Alex Morgan, who vacated the title after the bout to go pro; Big Country MMA’s Joe Elliott gets other shot. Elliot racked up three victories since the loss including a huge win over Rob Rivest. Elliot faces Team Barbarian’s Maxime Martens who has only one blemish on his record in six bouts.

Kevin Walker also came up short in his championship aspirations when he failed to defeat then champion Xavier Aloui at Victory MMA 7 in July. With Aloui out of the picture Walker gets another opportunity at the gold when he faces Thomas Sumantri of Fighter Dream Team. All championship bouts are scheduled for five rounds.

UFC 158 Full Card

Send to Kindle

UFC 158 takes place on March 16th, 2013 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.

Since the last update five new matchups have been added to the UFC 158 lineup.  Mike Ricci versus Colin Fletcher, Antonio Carvalho versus Darren Elkins, Johnny Eduardo versus Yves Jabouin, Sean Pierson versus Rick Story, and Mitch Gagnon versus Issei Tamura.

The runner up of The Ultimate Fighter season 16 Mike Ricci (7-3 MMA, 0-1 Ricci vs Fletcher copyUFC, 0-1 BFC) may have come up short as a Welterweight, but will be making his Lightweight debut against the TUF: Smashes Lightweight tournament finalist Colin Fletcher (8-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC). Tristar’s Ricci made a name for himself fighting on the local scene here in Montreal, but really turned heads when he went to the finals of TUF 16 at a higher weight class than his own. Ricci lost a unanimous decision to a much bigger Colton Smith how possessed a superb wrestling game, and controlled Ricci for all three rounds. His opponent Colin Fletcher, made a name for himself in the United Kingdom before appearing on TUF: Smashes. Fletcher gained notoriety for his “Freakshow” persona. He lost in the finals to Northern Ireland’s Norman Parke by unanimous decision. Like Ricci in his bout with Smith, Fletcher was unable to impose his striking again against the grappler. Three months removed from their UFC debuts what game plan will these Lightweights bring into the octagon as it’s “The Martian” versus “The Freakshow.”

Both Antonio Carvalho (15-5 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and Darren Elkins (15-2 MMA, Elkins vs Carvalho5-1 UFC) were successful in their last bouts at UFC 154 in Montreal. Carvalho is riding a two-fight win streak, while Top 10 ranked Elkins is riding a four fight win streak. Both fighters are pretty much even as well rounded fighters with knockout, submission and decision victories. Elkins dominated Steven Siler in his last bout to win the unanimous decision, he also has notable victories over Tiquan Zhang, Diego Brandao, Michihiro Omigawa, and Duane Ludwig. Carvalho has notable victories over Rodrigo Damm, Daniel Pineda, Douglas Evans, Takeshi Inoue, and Hatsu Hioki. These two Featherweights will collide to rise the rankings and eventually earn a title shot.

Former Featherweight Yves “The Tiger” Jabouin (18-8 MMA, 3-2 UFC, 1-2Jabouin vs Eduardo WEC) fights for the fifth time at Bantamweight when he faces two bout UFC veteran Johnny Eduardo (26-9 MMA, 1-1 UFC). In a battle of Tristar versus Black House Jabouin looks to bounce back from a knockout loss to Brad Pickett in September, when Eduardo looks to continue his win streak after besting Jeff Curran in May of 2012. After fighting 14 of 26 bouts in Quebec, Jabouin returns with the UFC on March 16th in Eduardo’s fifth bout outside of Brazil in a striker versus submission expert bout.

Sean Pierson (13-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) squares off against Rick Story Pierson vs Story(14-6 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in the sixth Welterweight bout on the card. Pierson is coming off a unanimous decision win over Lance Benoist at UFC 152, and is currently riding his first UFC win streak with two victories. After back-to-back wins over Johny Hendricks and  Thiago Alves, Rick Story was once considered a top prospect in the Welterweight division. However, he suffered two consecutive losses, and suffered a first round submission loss to Damian Maia at UFC 153 in his last bout. The two will meet each other in challenging bout for both athletes.

Mitch Gagnon (9-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Issei Tamura (7-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC)Gagnon vs Tamura both step back into the octagon for their third bout in the UFC.  Former Ringside MMA Featherweight champion Gagnon had a rough start when he lost his debut against Bryan Caraway at UFC 149. Tamura on the other hand won his UFC debut with a knockout of Tiquan Zhang at UFC 144. Gagnon bounced back from the loss with an aggressive and impressive rear-naked choke submission win over Walel Watson at UFC 152. While Tamura suffered a TKO loss to Rafael Assunsao in his Bantanweight debut at UFC on UFC on FUEL TV in July. Of Gagnon’s nine wins all have come by way of submission. His opponent Tamura has knockout ability be mainly goes the distance. Gagnon will attempt to remain undefeated at the Bell Centre, when Tamura fights outside of Japan for the second time.

UFC returns to Montreal March 16th for UFC 158

Send to Kindle

The UFC will be returning to Montreal in 2013 on March 16th for UFC 158 at the Bell Centre.

With the event just 98-days away it is difficult to determine what the actual fight card may be, however two fights are rumored to take place on the card.

The rumored main event for the card is UFC Welterweight  champion Georges St-Pierre versus former STRIKEFORCE Welterweight champion Nick Diaz. UFC president Dana White has confirmed that contracts for the bout have been sent out, however it “isn’t done yet” White said, with signatures remaining outstanding. With his unanimous decision victory over Carlos Condit on November 17th at UFC 154, St-Pierre puts aside the “super fight” with Anderson Silva to settle “unfinished business” with Diaz.

Another rumored fight, which is set yet unofficial is the UFC 115 rematch between Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit. After a decisive victory over B.J. Penn on December 8th, 2012, MacDonald called out  Condit. Condit who failed to capture the Welterweight title on Nov. 17th against Georges St-Pierre  is he only fighter to defeat MacDonald, causing the only blemish on his record. MacDonald dominated Condit for two rounds, but with a relentless comeback, Condit was able to finish MacDonald with 7-seconds remaining in the round.

With these bouts rumored, it is only fair to assume that the UFC will stack UFC 158 with Canadian talent.
