This Weekend in Fights! (January 21st) had UFC’s first appearance on FX, and the revived ProElite’s third event.

Friday night kicked off the weekend with the UFC on FX 1 from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee with the main event of Jim Miller versus Melvin Guillard. After coming off a tough three round war in August against Benson Henderson, Jim Miller looked like a man possessed when forced Guillard to tap out in just over two minutes of the very first round with a rear naked choke. The pace of the bout was set early on, but even with a change in camps Guillard’s ground skill were no match for New Jersey’s Miller.

Josh Neer made his comeback to the UFC with a Bang! Well sort of as he submitted Duane “Bang” Ludwig with a guillotine choke in the first round. Ludwig was striking hard and had appeared to rock Neer with a couple of strikes. Once the bout went to the ground, Neer slapped on a guillotine choking Ludwig out.

Mike Easton and Jared Papazian went toe-to-toe, literally with both fighters throwing tons of strikes in the Muay Thai clinch. The bout resembled a hockey with with both Featherweight throwing strikes at one another at a very intense pace. None of the strike were very effective as the bout lasted the full three rounds with Easton winning by majority decision, but definitely an impressive debut for Papazian.

Pat “HD” Barry displayed a very improved ground game in his bout against Christian Morecraft, and he was able to roll out of an arm bar early on. When the bout returned to a stand up war, Barry knockout out Morecraft with a left hook reminiscent of Mike Tyson.

On the under card Nick Denis destroyed Joseph Sandoval in 22 seconds with elbows knocking him out as the Ninja of Love gets his first UFC win. In his last UFC win Jorge Rivera picked a TKO victory over Eric Schafer in the second round, and retired post fight.(Full UFC on FX 1 event results below.)

ProElite continued the MMA action on Saturday night at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. The event was headlined by Kendall Grove taking on Ikuhisa Minowa in a lackluster three round unanimous decision. On the women’s side of things Sara McMann introduced herself to the world in a very one-sided beat down of Hitomi Akano.

In ProElite’s Hevayweight Grand Prix semi finals, Richard Odoms defeated Jake Heun in the first round with a rear-naked choke submission, and Ryan Martinez also advanced to the finals with a decision victory over Cody Griffin. (Full ProElite 3 event results below.)

Instinct MMA kicked off the weekend on Friday night with an amazing card at the Centre D’Excellence Sports Rousseau in Boisbriand, Quebec. Although he has spent some time away from the cage, Steve Bosse looked amazing in his main event bout against Houston Alexander with a knockout victory. The card also included Patrick Cote, Butterbean, Martin Grandmont, and a great win for Derek Gauthier.
At UFC 136 in Houston, Texas the world finally got the “Answer” of who the best Lightweight fighter in the world is, when Frankie Edgar avenged his only blemishes on his record by knocking out Gray Maynard in the fourth round. Maynard repeated his aggressive style of coming out strong and dangerous in the first, but using his great striking Edgar proceeded to pick a part Maynard and dropped him in the fourth causing the referee to call the action when Maynard was not defending himself. UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo retained his championship against Kenny Florian by keeping the fight standing. It was evident that the weight cut took its toll on Florian as he was unsuccessful in his take down attempts. Trash talking Chael Sonnen racked up another win in his pursuit to get back in title contention over Brian Stann. After being away from the cage for over a year Sonnen showed no cage rust and submitted Stann in the second round. (Full UFC 136 event results below.)

Bellator held the semi finals of their Season 5 Welterweight Tournament on Saturday at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma. Ben Saunders and Douglas Lima both advanced to the finals by finishing off their opponents. (Full Bellator 53 event results below.)

Victory MMA held their third event on Saturday night with 12 amateur action packed bouts including three kickboxing and nine MMA bouts. JKS’s Xavier Aloui captured the Victory MMA Bantamweight title in 25 seconds, when he submitted Josh Harley via arm bar and improves to 6-0. The night also saw some amazing knockouts with Mike McKenna ground and pounding his way to victory in 50 seconds and Chris Cleveland knocking out John Bryd in 18 seconds. (Full Victory MMA 3: Young Guns event results below.)

This is the second installment of the Ringside Report official MMA Top 10 rankings.

There was some movement in the heavyweight division rankings in August. Fedor Emelianenko drops out of the Top 10 with a loss to Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight champion Dan Henderson on July 30. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira moves back into the Top 10 Heavyweights in the world with an impressive knockout victory over Brendan Schaub. Nogueira had been absent from the octagon since February of 2010 when he lost to Cain Velasquez.

Henderson’s victory bumps him up to 6th on the list while Miller drops to 7th. The fact that Anthony Pettis is one of the few men to hold a victory over Henderson is enough to move him from 8th ranked in August, to 5th in September. Shinya Aoki and Eddie Alvarez move from 5th and 6th respectively to 8th and 9th due to their lack of facing top 10 level competition.

UFC Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz finally avenged his lone loss in MMA competition by dominating former WEC Featherweight champion/Pound for Pound great Urijah Faber in a one sided five round decision. On top of Cruz’s stellar performance, UFC 132 delivered some shocking knockouts and an unbelievable submission in a night of action packed fights. Four of the twelve scheduled fights ended in the first round by knockout.

Chris Leben ended The Axe Murderer Wanderlei Silva in under 30 seconds with multiple uppercuts, in what may possibly be the last outing in Silva’s glorious 15-year fight career.

Welterweight Carlos Condit has put himself in line for a title shot after finishing “the man that never loses” Don Hyun Kim in the first round with a beautiful flying knee, followed by some ground and pound.

Condit’s teammate Melvin Guillard also may have put himself in the long title shot line at lightweight after finishing his bout in impressive fashion as well. Guillard trampled through Shane Roller pushing the pace from the opening bell, dropping Roller twice with several strikes before the referee stepped in.

Underdog Rafael Dos Anjos returned to the octagon after a long layoff to make short work of former lightweight rising star George Sotiropoulos, by knocking him out in under a minute.

In the craziest story of the entire event heavy underdog Tito Ortiz submitted up and comer Ryan Bader in the first round. From the minute this bout was made no one gave Ortiz a chance to defeat the young prospect. Ortiz had not won a fight in the UFC since defeating Ken Shamrock in 2006, and many including Tito questioned his retirement post fight, but the former longest reigning and most defending UFC light heavyweight champion shocked the world and may just have a “Rocky” style comeback in the sport.
