Brock Lesnar drops from 4^th in December to 8^th in January following first round TKO loss to Alistair Overeem on December 30. Overeem remains 3^rd overall with the victory. With Lesnar’s drop, Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier move up from 5^th and 6^th last month to 4^th and 5^th in this month’s rankings. Frank Mir also improves from 9^th to 6^th with an impressive submission win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on December 10. Antonio Silva remains inactive with an injury and drops from 8^th to 9^th this month due to Mir’s upwards movement. Despite the loss, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira remains 10^th overall.

The weekend kicked off with STRIKEFORCE’s Challengers Series 20 from The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas. In only 28 seconds Lumumba Sayers knocked out Antwain Britt in the main event. Women’s MMA standout Ronda Rousey continued her reign of terror in the 145lbs division, with another first round arm bar submission victory. Rousey an Olympic Bronze medalist in the 2008 games has never gone past the first minute of each of her bouts improving to 4-0 with only 2:18 on cage experience. UFC 139 was headlined by an instant classic between two of the most respected and greatest fighters of all time in Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Emanating from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, Hendo and Shogun went the distance in a text book great MMA battle. There was great back and forth action between these two gladiators with both of them nearly finishing off the other on separate occasions. After five highly contested rounds Henderson got the nod from the judges with three rounds to two for the unanimous decision victory that many saw as a draw. The Axe Murderer Wanderlei Silva bounced back from his quick knockout loss to Chris Leben, with a very exciting striking match between he and Cung Le. Le made his UFC debut with the bout, and was out classed by the 15 year veteran, as Silva finished him off in the second round due to strikes. Also on the card, Urijah Faber punched his ticket to another title shot with his decisive victory over former WEC Bantamweight champion Brian Bowles, Stephen Bonnar out classed Kyle Kingsbury in a three round war, and Michael McDonald impresses with a 56 second knockout of Alex Soto. Bellator crowned a new Lightweight champion at Bellator 58 from the Seminole Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Hollywood, Florida when Michael Chandler submitted top 10 ranked Eddie Alvarez in the fourth round in what was a thrilling bout. Bellator Middleweight champion Hector Lombard continues to dominate the competition on the Bellator circuit with a TKO victory over Trevor Prangley in catch weight bout of 195lbs. Marlon Sandro made short work of Rafael Dias with an arm triangle submission in the first round. (Full Bellator 58 event results below.)

The new and improved Fedor Emelianenko returned to action with M-1 Global in mother Russia on November 20^th. The Last Emperor looked crisp with his technical striking and calmer demeanor inside the ring, leading him to break Jeff Monson’s leg on his way to a unanimous decision victory. Josh Barnett moves up from 7^th to 5^th ranked heavyweight in the world with a first round submission win over Sergei Kharitonov in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-finals on September 10. Daniel Cormier moves up from an honorable mention last month to 6^th in the world with a knockout victory over previously 5^th ranked Antonio Silva on September 10 in the other SF HW GP semi-final. With his loss, Antonio Silva drops from 5^th to 8^th, knocking Shane Carwin out of the 8^th spot and the top 10 due to his inactivity. Since his loss to Junior Dos Santos in June, Carwin has been inactive and has no opponent or date for his next bout.

Former DREAM featherweight champion, Bibiano Fernandes made a successful drop the bantamweight on September 24 at DREAM 17 with a submission victory over Takafumi Otsuka in less than one minute in the opening round of the DREAM bantamweight Grand Prix. Fernandes bumps Hideo Tokoro out of the 10^th spot, Tokoro suffered a decision loss to Antonio Banuelos on September 24 in another DREAM bantamweight quarter-final match.
