Weekend in Fights! April 21st Edition

This Weekend in Fights! (April 21st, 2012) finally saw the grudge match of this era, between UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and former teammate Rashad Evans. Bellator had a much anticipated super fight, between fromer Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and Japanese sensation Shinya Aoki, as well they held their semifinals of both the Middleweight and Lightweight tournaments. Quebec based MMA promotion WRECK MMA held their ninth event, crowning a new Bantamweight champion.

Bellator 66 kicked off the weekend’s festivities at the I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The event was headlined with a rematch three years in the making as former Bellator Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez squared off against DREAM Lighweight champion Shinya Aoki. On December 31, 2008, Aoki submitted Alvarez with a heel hook in 92 seconds. This time around it would be Alvarez that would get the first round victory with 134 second TKO. After dropping Aoki twice, Alvarez pounced on Aoki, delivering a relentless barrage of ground and pound strikes, forcing the referee to call a stop to the action. In what was to a very anticipated rematch, ended up being a very one sided bout.

In the first Middleweight tournament semifinal matchup, Maiquel Falcao took on Vyacheslav Vasilevsky in a three round war. Despite his good foot work and takedowns, Vasilevsky was unable to match Falcao on his feet and ultimately lost the fight in the eyes of the judges. The other semifinal Middleweight tournament bout had a shocking conclusion, as last minute replacement, Andreas Spang came back from near defeat to knockout Brian Rogers. Spang attempted to end the bout in the first round with a standing rear-naked choke, but Rogers was able to fight it off and connect with a series of strikes. Rogers continued his striking in the second round, rocking Spang, but unable to deliver the kill shot. Spang regained his composure, and came out swinging, connecting with a left hook that knocked Rogers out on his feet. As Rogers fell to the floor, Spang connected with another couple of shots, but the bout was over. Spang now moves into the finals against Maiquel Falcao.

The semifinals of the Lightweight tournament took place, and although, Lloyd Woodard had a spectacular performance in his quarterfinal matchup, the standup skill of the former Welterweight combatant Rick Hawn. During the second round, Hawn scored a 10 second knockout of Woodard, punching his ticket to the finals. In the other semifinal matchup, Brent Weedman edged out prolific kickboxer Thiago Michel. Michel did a fantastic job of damaging the eye of Weedman, but it was Weedman’s grappling that proved to be the deciding factor, as he picked up the split decision victory. Weedman will now take on Hawn in the finals.

Wreck MMA 9:  Road to Glory took place at Casino Lac Leamy, in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada on Friday night. The event was headlined with a bout between Randy Turner and Eric Perez to crown the inaugural WRECK MMA Bantamweight champion. Turner used his superior ground skills to control Perez on the ground for the majority of the bout, busting him open in the third, and continuing his ground and pound assault throughout the remainder of the bout for unanimous decision after five rounds.

Former BTT Canada standout Nabil Khatib was in action against Brandt Dewsbery. Dewsbery was on the receiving of a lot of takedowns from Nabil Khatib, but was able to pick up the victory with his wide variety of strikes.

After going 0-2 in the UFC Mark Holst retired from MMA action back in October of 2010, he returned to action in January of 2011 for WRECK MMA. 16 months later Holst would return to action once again for WRECK MMA to take on Stephane Lamarche. Holst would attempt a variety of submissions in the second round, including a rear-naked choke, omaplata, and finally a kimura that got him the victory midway through the second round.

Undefeated Women’s MMA 130lbs fighter Claudia Gadelha continued her streak, with a split decision victory over Quebec standout Valerie Letourneau. Gadelha was cut open during the bout, but used a lay and pray style to control the bout, in what can only be described as a very lackluster bout. Also on the card, former UFC, WEC veteran and MTV reality star Kit Cope ended his four fight losing skid with a first round  arm bar submission victory over  Jeff Harrison. (Full WRECK MMA 9: Road to Glory events results below.)

On Saturday night UFC 145 took place at the Phillips Arena, in Atlanta Georgia. The headliner was of course the much anticipated grudge match between fromer teammates turned bitter rivals, as UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones squared off against Rashad Evans. Although, the bout did not have a finish, Jones easily defending all of Evans’ takedown attempts and kept the former champion at bay with a variety of kicks and punches. Jones connected with a few big shots that cause Evans to fumble, but was unable to deliver the kill shot. Evans looked completely confused and out classed, as he had no answers for anything Jones threw his way. After five rounds, Jones was awarded the unanimous decision, picking up his third title defense.

In the co-main event of the evening, Rory MacDonald outclassed Che Mills by taking him down, and delivering some vicious ground and pound rendering Mills a bloody mess. In the second round, MacDonald continued his ground and pound assault forcing the referee to call a stop to the action midway through the round.

“Big” Ben Rothwell picked up his 19th career knockout over  Brendan Schaub. Schaub seemed to have rocked Rothwell, and was moving in with wild strikes to finish him off. Rothwell however, connected with a counter left hook, dropping Schaub to the ground immediately for the victory in just 70 seconds.  In another first round knockout, Bantamweight Michael McDonald connected with a uppercut-jab-uppercut combo to knockout the former Bantamweight kingpin Miguel Torres.

Only two of the five Canadians of the card picked up victories, as Chris Clements went the distance for the first time in his career with a split decision over Keith Wisniewski. Mark Bocek picked up a unanimous decision over fellow Canadian John Alessio. While both Mark Hominick and John Makdessi suffered decision losses, with Hominick losing to a split decision to Eddie Yagin, and Makdessi losing a unanimous decision to Anthony Njokuani. UFC 145 Delayed!

Send to Kindle

The proposed UFC 145 on March 24th at the Bell Centre in Montreal has officially been delayed. During UFC 140 weekend it was announced by Welterweight competitor Rory MacDonald that he would be facing British slugger Che Mills in Montreal on the 24th. Since then the UFC has announced seven more bouts, but no main event. The UFC had recently added three more bouts to card including Mac Danzig versus Efrian Escudero, John Makdessi versus Anthony Njokuani, and the UFC debut of Ringside MMA Welterweight champion Chris Clements versus Keith Wisniewski.

Ringside Report (www.ringsidereport.net) has been keeping tabs on the scheduled bouts and speculating a possible main event for the card. With the process of elimination of champions the only possible conclusion the Ringside Report crew could come up with was a possible Light Heavyweight championship bout between champion Jon Jones versus either  Rashad Evans if he is successful and unscathed after his bout the Phil Davis on January 28th, or the STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight champion Dan Henderson.

The UFC is still planning on coming to Montreal in 2012 but is uncertain when that will be, but it will definitely not be on March 24th. The UFC attempted to secure a date in April for the Bell Centre, but was unsuccessful.

With the consideration of Montreal being the first Canadian city to host the UFC, and one of the promotions largest markets, it was reported that due to scheduling complications and a desire to bring a championship card is most likely the reasoning for the delay.

UFC 145 Card Update!

Send to Kindle

On March 24th, 2012 the UFC returns to the Bell Centre in Montreal with UFC 145. No main event has been announced for the card, but as previously reported here on www.ringsidereport.net Canadian Welterweight stand out Rory MacDonald  (12-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will meet heavy-handed Brit Che Mills (14-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC).

Four more match ups have been announced of an expected 12 bout card including a Heavyweight bout pitting runner up of Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter Brandan Schaub (8-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) takes on seasoned veteran Ben Rothwell (31-8 MMA, 1-2 UFC). Also in Heavyweight action former STRIKEFORCE fighter Chad Griggs (11-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes his UFC debut against undefeated Travis Browne (12-0-1 MMA, 3-0-1 UFC).

In Featherweight action Mark “The Machine” Hominick (20-10 MMA, 3-2 UFC, 3-2 WEC) looks to bounce back from a two fight losing skid against well rounded Eddie Yagin (15-5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) and in Lightweight action Mark Bocek (10-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) looks to use the momentum off his last win at UFC 140 against Nik Lentz, when he takes on the ever so tough Matt Wiman (14-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) who is also looking to use his momentum from his fight of the year candidate bout against Mac Danzig on October 1st.

UFC 129: St-Pierre VS. Shields DVD review

Send to Kindle

In front of an Ultimate Fighting Championship record crowd of 55,000 in Toronto’s Roger Centre, Canada’s own Georges St-Pierre for the second straight fight left jabbed his way to successfully defend his welterweight championship at UFC 129.

GSP was able to score a few takedowns, but pretty much the whole fight was kept standing. GSP was a lot more cautious against Jake Shields than his fight at UFC: 124. GSP did score the more impressive strikes, however out of respect for Shields’ ability to defend on the ground GSP did not go for the finish.

Shockingly in the fourth round Shields left GSP a bloody mess. Shields nailed a mean right that had GSP telling his corner, “I can’t seez out of my left.” With only a round left, GSP swag wildly with his right and missed quite a lot. While GSP did not win every round, he did more than Shields to get his hand raised. Surprisingly, fans booed near the end of the fight.

In one of the special features on the DVD, Super 7: Q & A with all UFC Champions, Joe Rogan questions Anderson Silva about the talk of a potential super-fight against GSP. Silva admits that GSP along with B.J. Penn are the best in the world and fights against them are Dana White’s decision, “not mine.”

The behind-the-scenes extras show how UFC had to put together their biggest setup ever. Getting the venue ready in five days was quite tricky with about 1000 people working on the setup. GSP is shown arriving to the venue earlier in the day talking about how nervous he was but very honoured to be the main event of the biggest UFC show ever. There is no post-fight interviews with Shields or GSP, but there is footage of GSP’s trainer Firas Zahabi telling Shields he was the best challenge GSP ever had.

In what was deemed the Fight Of The Night, Mark Hominick was left bloody and a disgusting hematoma on his forehead after coming up short in his battle with UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Hominick did give Aldo his greatest challenge to date, but in the end Aldo proved that he is not only deadly on the ground and with his kicks, but his fists are also equally strong.

In his last fight in mixed martial arts, UFC legend Randy Couture went down to a devastating jump head kick by Lyoto Machida early in the second round. Couture looked frustrated early in round one trying to figure out how to takedown Machida. A slight opening was all Machida needed to deliver the same kind of knockout Silva delivered at UFC: 126.

Despite what many fans have said about the main event outcome, UFC 129 features some fantastic back-and-forth grappling battles, bloody wars and impressive submissions. UFC gives fans so much more with the addition of French commentating of the entire event with Patrick Cote and Jean-Paul Chartrand, all the prelim fights, and a special look into Couture’s training for his final fight.

If you’re an MMA fan this DVD should be in your collection.

UFC 124: St-Pierre v. Koscheck 2 DVD review

Send to Kindle

Georges St-Pierre broke Josh Kosheck’s right orbital bone after hard jabs for five straight rounds inside Montreal’s 23,000 plus packed Bell Centre at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s last event and fight of 2010.

UFC 124 occurred at the same time amateur wrestler and fighter Devon Hannibal Nicholson was choking out Total Nonstop Action star Tommy Dreamer in St-Leonard. For the UFC record setting attendance they got to leave their event satisfied with their hero coming out on top.

Koscheck disrespected GSP and French Canadians the last time he was fighting in Montreal and throughout the Ultimate Fighter season where GSP and Koscheck were coaches. On the first disc you get a chance to relive all the hype with the UFC 124 pre-show and on the second disc you get to see how GSP and Koscheck prepared mere days before the fight in the behind the scenes footage. You also get to see GSP and Koscheck when they arrived at the Bell Centre and GSP’s comments after the fight is over.

An awkward yet funny moment in the bonus footage is when Koscheck says how awkward it is being in the same elevator with GSP after they had their press conference. With GSP standing boldy in his dress suit with no emotion whatsoever on his face, Koscheck cannot help but laugh. Koscheck admits to the UFC cameras while he was hiding up in his Montreal hotel room that he was only insulting GSP and Canada in order for fans to want to buy the pay-per-view. However, Koscheck’s consistent teasing during the Ultimate Fighter season looked like it was really bugging GSP.

“His eye is FU##ED!” was yelled out by Koscheck’s corner only a few minutes into his fight. Koscheck believed he had an advantage if he stood up with GSP. The three-inch reach advantage GSP had and the explosive jabs he possesses were too much for Koscheck to stop. Throughout most of the 25-minute fight, GSP was able to land major punches right in Koscheck’s face even though Koscheck did his best to block them.

Credit to Koscheck for taking so many punches from GSP and Koscheck never once got knocked down because of his eye or because he got rocked. Koscheck was able to score a takedown on GSP to end the first round, but when it came to standing up Koscheck was completely dominated. GSP tried to finish the fight in the later rounds, but Koscheck was able to get up from GSP’s takedowns and he did not fall into any of GSP’s submission traps.

After the fight in the extras GSP is upset with himself for not ending the fight. GSP goes over strategy with his team on ways he could improve. GSP ends the behind the scenes segment by stating in a mocked fan’s voice that certain fans are going to think he is bad fighter because he could not finish the fight. GSP was not successful throughout 2010 to finish his fights, but he is still the defending welterweight champion.

The rest of the card featured a knockout, TKO and submission victory all on the main card. The majority of the prelims and the Thiago Alves against John Howard fight went to three round decisions. Definitely a healthy variety dose of mixed martial arts spread throughout the two-disc set.

With the first ever French language track added to a UFC DVD, it makes the DVD an instant collector’s item for GSP fans all over Quebec. Not the best GSP fight ever, but easily one that Montrealers will not forget anytime soon. Beating Koscheck so badly that he had to get surgery will forever be a defining moment in MMA history here in Montreal.
