This Weekend in Fights! (January 19th, 2013) featured the only two major WIF Jan 19North American based MMA promotions in Bellator and UFC, now that STRIKEFORCE is officially over. The weekend also featured TUF Alumni, Bellator, STRIKEFORCE, PRIDE, DREAM, and WEC veterans at Resurrection Fighting Alliance 6 in Missouri and Championship Fighting Alliance 4 in Florida.

Bellator will now be featured every Thursday night on Spike TV. Their debut episode kicked off this weekend with Bellator 85 from Bren Center in Irvine, California. The card featured two title bouts, including Lightweight champion Michael Chandler making his first defense against season 7 tournament winner Rick Hawn, and Featherweight champion Pat Curran defending his title against season 5 tournament winner Patricio Freire. The card also featured three of four season 8 Light Heavyweight tournament opening round bouts.

To open up the televised portion of the card was the Featherweight championship but. Pat Curran and Patricio Freire went the distance in a back-and-forth striking bout that saw Curran walk away with his title in a split decision. Curran and Friere landed a lot of single punches throughout the round, with few multi-strike combinations connecting. Curran threw a lot of head kicks that were mainly blocked, as Friere worked inside leg kicks. In the end, Friere’s face was swollen and damaged with  a cut under his left eye and a bloody nose. Two judges saw the bout 48-47 for Curran, while the other saw it 48-47 for Friere, for the split decision.

Michael Chandler made his first Lightweight title defense in the main event against former Welterweight Rick Hawn. Chandler took Hawn down in the first round and controlled the pace of the fight, even though Hawn was never in any real trouble. Hawn did make it to his feet near the end of the round and attempted to use judo unsuccessfully. In the second round, the two battled against the cage, where Chandler secured a takedown. Once on the ground Chandler began to throw elbows from Hawn’s guard. In an attempt to improve his position Hawn used the cage to wall walk, but with the opening Chandler took his back and sunk in the rear-naked choke for the win. Chandler is now 8-o in Bellator with six stoppages.

The third Light Heavyweight tournament quarterfinal matchup between M-1 Global veteran Mikhail Zayats and journeyman Renato “Babalu” Sobral.  In the closing minute of the first frame, Zayats landed a huge spinning back fist that damaged Sobral. Zayats attempted to take him down, and landed shots in close distance. Those shots sent Sobral crashing to the round, where Zayats pounded him out with hammerfists with 11-seconds remaining in the round to win the fight and advance into the semifinals.

The other two Light Heavyweight tournament quarterfinals saw Jacob Noe TKO Seth Petruzelli mid way through the first round, after Petruzelli got the better of him until a takedown attempt saw Noe land on top and end the bout when Petruzelli wasn’t intelligently defending himself. Noe advances into the semifinals. Emanuel Newton submitted Atanas Djambazov with a rear-naked choke  submission in the second round to snap Djambazov’s 10-fight win streak and advance. UFC veterans Mike Guymon and Jamie Yager were both unsuccessful in their Bellator debuts. Guymon was knocked out by Savant Young, and Yager suffered a TKO loss to Joe Williams. The Friday night fights were aired on AXS TV with Resurrection Fighting Alliance  6 from the Kansas City Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Missouri. The card featured UFC, Bellator, STRIKEFORCE, WEC, and M-1 Global veterans and TUF Alumni. The main event featured a Bellator 14 rematch between James Krause and Toby Imada. Unlike the first matchup which Imada submitted Krause in the second round with an armbar, the bout went to the judges score cards. Also different from their first bout Krause’s hand was raised. The three time Bellator tournament finalist was dominated for three rounds to lose a unanimous decision to Krause. Krause used a simple game plan of continuous jabs to keep his distance from Imada, winning 30-27 on all three judges score cards.

UFC and WEC veteran Brock Larson picked a third consecutive victory with a unanimous decision over M-1 Global and STRIKEFORCE veteran Eduardo Pamplona. The Minnesota Martial Arts team member used wrestling to keep Pamplona on the ground where he grinded his way to victory with ground and pound. With two rounds in the bag, Larson found himself almost losing the fight when he was on his back in the third and on the receiving end of ground and pound. Larson was able to tough it out and pick the decision 29-28 on all three judges score cards.

In another Bellator rematch Kevin Croom and Brian Davidson squared off once again. In their first bout at Bellator 26 Croom submitted Davidson in the second round. In this bout Croom knocked him out in 42-seconds. Croom is now 2-0 against Davidson.

TUF Alumni and gay porn star Dakota Cochrane picked up his third straight RFA victory with a third round TKO over Deivison Ribeiro. Cochrane withstood two low blows during the bout, but he’s use to that and finished the fight using his  elbows with only 28-seconds remaining in the round. On Saturday night the UFC return to Brazil with UFC on FX 7 from the Ginasio Estadual Geraldo Jose de Almeida in Sao Paulo. Stacked with Brazilian talent the main event featured Vitor Belfort versus Michael Bisping. Vitor Belfort only loses to the best fighters in the world, and that list doesn’t include  Michael Bisping. Belfort and Bisping really felt each other for the majority of first round until Victor landed a kick and rushed in cause Bisping to back pedal. In the second round Belfort rushed in with another high kick which rocked Bisping sending him reeling. Belfort pounced on Bisping and pounded him out.

The co-main event featured the UFC debut TUF Brazil alumni Daniel Sarafian who squared off in Middleweight action against C.B. Dollaway. Sarafian controlled the pace of the first round with impressive standup and takedown defense. Mid way through  second round Dolloway turn the tide of the bout  and landed a huge strike that hurt Sarafian but he was saved by the bell. In the third round Sarafian looked visibly fatigued and Dolloway took him down with ease. Sarafian was able to escape tough positions, but didn’t do enough to convince the judges. Dolloway wins a split decision 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.

In the Heavyweight bout of the night Gabriel Gonzaga submitted Ben Rothwell with a guillotine choke in the second round. The first round was very even feeling out process and clinching against the cage. To start the second round Gonzaga landed 3 flush punches to Rothwell’s face. Following the third strie the two to clinch, where Gonzaga slapped on a guillotine choke and pulled guard. After a few seconds of attempting to pull out of the submission Rothwell tapped. Gonzaga is now 2-0 since returning to the UFC in January of 2012.

Khabib Nurmagomedov destroyed Thiago Tavares with a first round TKO. Nurmagomedov landed a leaping uppercut that sent Taveres crashing to the mat. Nurmagomedov pounced on Tavares and pounded him out cold with a 17 ground and pound elbows. Referee Dan Miragliotta was very late on the stoppage, the second mistake he made tonight.  Nurmagomedov improves to 19-0, and 3-0 in the UFC, while Tavares’ 2-fight win streak is snapped, and he loses for the first time in Brazil.

On the FUEL TV prelims Godofredo “Pepey” Castro picked a split decision over  Milton Vieira in controversial fashion. Vieira decisively won the first round with wrestling. In the second Pepey landed a huge kimura sweep and connected with some ground and pound from full mount. As Vieira attempted to improve position Pepey took his back  and lock a body triangle. Pepey dominated the rest of the round with punches and rear-naked choke attempts. Vieira then connected with more strikes and takedowns in the third round, “winning” the round. However, the judges saw it differently and award Pepey his first UFC victory.

Ronny Markes handed Andrew Craig his first ever loss with a unanimous decision. Markes wrestling Craig to the ground and held him their for the first two rounds. Craig rebounded in the third round when he was in half guard landing a series of short elbows. Craig was unable to finish Markes before the bell, and lost the bout 1 round to 2. Markes remains undefeated in the UFC.

Nik Lentz picked up a unanimous decision over Diego Nunes by smothering him with his superior wrestling skills. Lentz hugged Nunes for the first round, sat on him for the second, and did both in the third while getting hit. Lentz threw the occasional punch in order to stay active and not be separated by the ref. He walks away with his second victory at Featherweight.

Edson Barboza made short work of the undefeated Lucas Martins with a first round submission due to strikes. Barboza landed a huge jab as Martins was rushing in, which caused his knees to buckle. Seeing his opponent was hurt Barboza pounced on him and rained down punches until Martins tapped out.

Yuri Alcantara was on his way to win his Bantamweight debut against the debuting Pedro Nobre. Alcantara was handling Nobre with a takedown into a kimura submission, which Nobre impressively escaped after his hand touched the back of his head. Alcantara transitioned in a back mount and was raining down punches until referee Dan Miragliotta stopped the action due to illegal strikes. All the strikes hit Nobre in the ear and not the back of the head. Nobre was unable to continue therefore the bout was declared a no contest. Alcantara’s brother Ildemar made his UFC debut prior to Yuri’s bout. Idlemar submitted Wagner Prado in the second round with an impressive knee lock.

In the only Facebook prelim, Francisco “Massaranduba” Trinaldo ended his bout in impressive fashion with a belly to back suplex in an arm triangle choke submission, to submit C.J. Keith in under two minutes of the second round. (Full UFC on FX 7: Belfort vs. Bisping event results below.)

CFA 9 Saturday (Luis Palomino, Alexis Vila) – BankUnited Center, Coral Gables, Florida. The card featured the crowning of four championships, a Cage Fighting Alliance crowned inaugural champions in the Welterweight, Lightweight, Featherweight and Flyweight divisions. In the Lightweight title bout Pride & Dream veteran Luiz Buscape battled Bellator Luis Palomino for five rounds. The member of the Blackzillians camp Buscape the vacant CFA Lightweight championship title 49-46 on all three judges score cards. Another Blackzillian member became a CFA champion by decision as Sean Soriano won the interim Featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Victor Delgado. In the Welterweight Bellator and M-1 Global veteran Marcelo Alfaya knocked out Valdir Araujo in 25-seconds to win the vacant CFA Welterweight championship title. Josh Sampo won the inaugural CFA Flyweight title when he submitted Bellator veteran and Olympian Alexis Vila with a guillotine choke in the fifth round. This Weekend in Fights! (January 12th, 2013) marked Jan 12 WIFa sad day in MMA history, with final STRIKEFORCE event ever.

STRIKEFORCE was founded by Scott Coker in 1985 as a kickboxing promotion. In 2006 STRIKEFORCE transitioned into an MMA company with the featured bout between Frank Shamrock versus Cesar Gracie in the main event. Since that event they have produced 63 events since; 43 major cards and 20 challengers series. Crowning 25 champions or 26 if you count the World Heavyweight Grand Prix title during the last six years. One Heavyweight champion in Alistair Overeem. Six Light Heavyweight champions in Bobby Southworth, Renato Sobral, Gegard Mousasi, Monhammed Lawal, Rafael Cavalcante, and Dan Henderson. Five Middleweight champions in Frank Shamrock, Cung Le, Jake Shields, Ronaldo Souza, and Luke Rockhold. Two Welterweight champions in Nick Diaz and Nate Marquardt. Three Strikeforce logo 2006-2013Lightweight champions in Clay Guida, Josh Thompson, and Gilbert Melendez twice. One Women’s Featherweight champion in Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, and STRIKEFORCE 1-63four Women’s Bantamweight champions in Sarah Kaufman, Marloes Coenen, Miesha Tate, and Ronda Rousey. Josh Thompson is the only holder of both defunct U.S. Welterweight and U.S. Lightweight championships, and Daniel Cormier is the only STRIKEFORCE World Heavyweight Grand Prix champion. STRIKEFORCE held three MMA tournaments including the Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2011 through to 2012, the one night four fighters Women’s Bantamweight tournament in 2010, and the “Four Men Enter, One Man Survives” Middleweight tournament in 2007. STRIKEFORCE was a pioneer in MMA history for giving Women the opportunity to fight on the grand stage. With co-promotion with M-1 Global, the talent sharing deals with DREAM and the signing of MMA stars such as Fedor Emelianenko, Dan Henderson, Alistair Overeem, Gegard Mousasi and others, STRIKEFORCE was the number two promotion in the world to fight. In March of 2011 the promotion was bought out by the parent company of the UFC, Zuffa LLC, and continued to run as an independent organization, but with many of STRIKEFORCE’s top stars and champions  jumping ship and divisions dissolving it was evident that the company would eventually fold. Forced to cancel two cards during that final quarter of 2012, UFC officials officially announced that the January 12th, 2013 card was indeed the final event for the promotion.

The 63rd and final STRIKEFORCE event took place at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Saturday night. The main event featured the crowning of the last and final STRIKEFORCE Welterweight champion as Tarec Saffiedine defeated then champion Nate Marquardt in a five round affair. The bout had a slow start, but Saffiedine landed  a counter jab that buckled Marquardt’s knees, but he remained up fazed. Saffiedine picked Marquardt’s right leg apart throughout every round rendering a dark red from bruising. A lot of clinching and exchanging from both, but after three round Marquardt looked visibly winded, but carried on for the remaining two rounds, however, Saffiedine clearly controlled the pace. In the end Saffiedine would win a unanimous decision(48-47, 49-46, 49-46 to be capture the welterweight title.

STRIKEFORCE World Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier continued his undefeated streak on his path to the UFC with a second round TKO win over Dion Staring. A heavy favorite Cormier wasn’t looking past his final STRIKEFORCE opponent who came in swinging early. Initially Cormier struggled for the takedown but it wasn’t long before the fight was on the ground and he was raining down heavy shots. Surprising to many Staring made through the first frame, but the end would come in the near the end of the second round with ground and pound strikes from Cormier in full mount forced referee “Big” John McCarthy to call a stop to the action. In his post fight interview Cormier revealed that his UFC debut will be on April 20th at UFC on FOX 7 where he will be taking on Frank Mir, and the said he wants Jon Jones to beat Chael Sonnen so he can: “Kick his ass in the fall.”

Josh Barnett had two fights as he was battling the flu and  Nandor Guelmino. Guelmino was no match for Barnett as he took him down with ease right into a full mount and slapped on his signature arm-triangle choke to force the tap just over two minutes into the very first round. Barnett cut an awesome pro wrestling style promo at the end of the bout which was very entertaining.

After a 13-month lay off Gegard Mousasi returned to the STRIKEFORCE cage as a man possessed. Mousasi would pikced up his 33rd career victory by destroying Mike Kyle with a first round  rear-naked choke submission.  Mousasi took Kyle down and would proceed to transition from guard to, half guard, to mount with a flurry a devastating elbows. From that position Mousasi rained down punches, forcing Kyle to give up his back where Mousasi would cinch in the choke.

Ronaldo “Jacare”Souza made short work of UFC Middleweight import Ed Herman with a beautiful kimura submission in the first round. The dangerous submissions expert had Herman on the ground early but an illegal up kick baffling brought the fight back standing. Souza takes Herman down and is in side control where he quickly slaps on the kimura forcing the tap.

In the most baffling decision of the night Ryan Couture picked up a split decision victory over  K.J. Noons in a fight that one judge was clearly not watching. Couture and Noons measured each other up in the first round, but it wasn’t until the end of the round when Couture landed a spin kick, then tripped and was illegally kneed by Noons which was called. Noons the picked apart Couture in the second round, but failed to finish him of. The third round saw Noons counter strike a wobbly, yet aggressive Couture. In the end two judges saw the bout 29-28 for Couture and the other 30-27 for Noons. Noons was visibly upset post fight as he was robbed of a victory.

Also on the card war hero Tim Kennedy submitted Trevor Smith with a guillotine choke in the third round. Pat Healy earned his 29th career victory and sixth in a row by defeating a very game Kurt Holobaugh via unanimous decision after three rounds. Roger Gracie defeated Anthony Smith in the second round Gracie-Style with an arm-triangle choke submission. (Full STRIKEFORCE: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine event results below.)

Weekend in Fights! September 29th Edition

This Weekend in Fights! (September 29th, 2012) featured the opening round of Bellator season 7 Welterweight tournament at Bellator 74 in Atlantic City. UFC on FUEL TV 5 in Nottingham, England. XFO 20 from Knoxville, Tennessee, Shoot 10th Round in Tokyo, Japan, and M-1 Challenge 34 in Moscow, Russia. STRIKEFORCE Melendez vs. Healy was slated for Saturday night but do to STRIKEFORCE Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez pulling out of the fight, the entire event was scrapped.

Bellator 74 kicked off the weekend from the Caesars Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Friday night, with the event broadcast on MTV 2 and Spike.com. The event featured the opening round of Bellator season 7 Welterweight tournament. Lyman Good, Marius Zaromskis, Michail Tsarev, and  Andrey Koreshkov all advance into the in the semifinals with victories. Only Michail Tsarev didn’t leave his bout in the hands of the judges as he submitted Tim Welch with a rear-naked choke two minutes into the second round. All the other tournament bouts ended via unanimous decision as Lyman Good defeated Jim Wallhead, Marius Zaromskis defeated Nordine Taleb, and Andrey Koreshkov defeated Jordan Smith.

Also on the card, both Phillipe Nover and Alexandre “Popo” Bezerra  won their bouts with rear-naked chokes submission at 3:04 of the first round. Nover choked Derrick Kennington out cold, winning a technical submission. While Bezerra forced Matt McCook to tap out. In a last minute women’s MMA bout

Michelle Ould easily pikced up a unanimous decision over  Munah Holland by taking her to the ground and pounding her out. Holland had an active guard, but didn’t attempt to stand up where she is most dangerous. Although she had submission attempts and strikes from her back, the judges saw her on her back therefore awarded Ould the bout. (Full Bellator 74 event results below.)

Also on Friday night was XFC 20 from the Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum in Knoxville, Tennessee, with the event broadcast on AXS TV. XFC Lightweight champion Eric Reynolds had a successful title defense with a second guillotine submission over  Lorenzo Borgomeo. In the co-main event of the evening Scott Holtzman picked up a TKO victory over Chris Coggins with 15-seconds remaining in the first round. (Full XFC 20: High Octane event results below.)

Saturday night featured multiple events, but none greater than UFC on FUEL TV 5 at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England. The card featured many U.K. and European fighters. The event was headlined with a Heavyweight clash between “The Huge Dude” Stefan Struve and undefeated knockout artist Stipe Miocic. Miocic may be a knockout artist, however it was the golden gloves boxer who was knocked out by Struve in the second round. Both heavyweights were connecting a series of power shots, but after what appeared to be an eye poke, Struve connected with a series of rights and uppercuts knocking Miocic out on his feet. With the victory Struve is now riding a 4-fight win streak, while Miocic drops his first pro fight in his career in the “Fight of the Night.”

In the co-main event of the evening Nottingham’s own Dan Hardy smashed  Amir Sadollah for three rounds. Hardy displayed an improvement in his wrestling taking down Sadollah with ease. Hardy busted Sadollah’s face up with elbows from the mount position.

Bad weekend all around for Tristar, as Tom Watson’s UFC debut was spoiled by Brad Tavares who squeaked out split decision. Yves Jabouin was knocked out by Brad Pickett with a devistating uppercut that dropped him. Pickett follwoed up with a few unnecessary shots to confirm his victory and claim the “Knockout of the Night” bonus.

In the “Submission of the Night”  Matt Wiman submitted submission specialist Paul Sass at his own game by taking him to the ground and slapping on an arm bar in the first round, handing Sass his first ever career loss.

Two impressive UFC debuts included Jimi Manuwa total destruction of Kyle Kingsbury and Gunnar Nelson submission of DaMarques Johnson. Manuwa connected with a series of punches, knees and kicks that shut Kingsbury’s eye forcing the judges to end the bout after the second round. Nelson connected with a head kick early in the round and brought the fight to the ground against the out of shape Johnson to finish it with a rear-naked choke. This long weekend of fights continued with two events on Sunday. Shooto (Japan) 10th Round emanated from the famous Korakuen Hall, in Tokyo, Japan. In the main event Mikihito Yamagami choked out Junji Ito with a rear-naked choke in the second round. UFC & DREAM veteran Caol Uno was in action. Uno loss a unanimous decision to Shintaro Ishiwatari. With this loss Uno drops two in a row, and is 2-7-1 in his last 10 outings. (Full Shooto – 10th Round event results below.) 

Sunday’s other event was in Moscow, Russia at the Druzhba Sport Hall for M-1 Challenge 34. The event was headlined by Fedor Emelianenko’s little brother Aleksander, who squared off against Konstantin Gluhov. The bout went the distance with Emelianenko picking up the unanimous decision victory, which was trend during the event as three of the eleven bouts ended by decision. Weekend in Fights! June 23rd Edition

This Weekend in Fights! (June 23rd, 2012) featured two UFC events, Bellator kicking off their Light Heavyweight tournament, XFC 18, ONE FC 4, Gladiator Challenge, and the retirement bout of “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emenlianenko.

Fedor kicked off the weekend on Thursday night for M-1 Global at the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. Emelianenko squared off against Pride, Affliction veteran and former UFC Heavyweight title contender Pedro Rizzo. In classic Fedor fashion the bout ended in 84-seconds. Missing his chance to end it early with a flurry of strikes, Emelianenko connected with some leg kicks that were followed up by a combination that ultimately put Rizzo to sleep. Arguably the greatest Heavyweight of all-time, Emelianenko ends his glorious career on a three fight win streak with a total MMA record of 34-4.

The M-1 Global Heavyweight title was unified on the card, as Interim champion Kenny Garner took on champion Guram Gugenishvili. Garner battled Gugenishvili to the point of exhaustion over three rounds. With a rear-naked choke attempt in the first and defensive leg kick combinations Gugenishvili controlled most of the first two frames. In the third Garner connected with a combination of an uppercut and multiple hooks to rock Gugenishvili, who was saved by the bell. With the extensive damage to his face and completely exhausted, Gugenishvili was unable to continue, snapping is 11-fight win streak and title reign. With the victory Garner unifies the titles and continues to ride a six fight win streak.

Former UFC title contender Jeff Monson was also featured on the card, much like Fedor in the main event ending his fight is classic fashion, Monson did the same. Monson used his signature north-south choke to submit Denis Komkin in under two minutes. Scoring his eighth north-south choke submission victory of his carrer, the highly decorated grappler shot in quickly, avoided a guillotine choke attempt from Komkin, only to place himself in position to squeeze in his choke for the force tap. UFC on FX 4 took place at the Revel Atlantic City in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Friday night. Top 10 Ranked Lightweights Clay Guida (#7) and Gray Maynard (#3) met in the five round main event. The two very strong wrestlers had a striking war, that saw Maynard find his range in the later rounds on a very energetic Guida. Guida mostly bounced around the cage throwing various combinations, but once Maynard was able to close the distance he was able to connect. After the full five rounds the two judges saw the bout for Maynard and one for Guida, handing Maynard the split decision victory.

With one a piece Spencer Fisher and Sam Stout had their trilogy bout in the co-main event. In his UFC debut at UFC 58 in 2006, Stout won their first meeting with a split decision. The two would meet again 14-months later at UFC Fight Night 10, where Fisher got the judges nod. Five years later they would conclude their trilogy in yet another decision bout, with Stout finalizing it unanimously. In what Fisher was claiming could possibly be his final fight, he was out classed in a three rounds with the much improved wrestling game of Stout who won each round 10-9.

Ricardo Lamas played spoiler to potential title contender Hatsu Hioki with a unanimous decision. Lamas spent the majority of the bout on his back, holding Hioki in a head lock attempting to sink in a guillotine choke. Hioki was in the mount position and was never in an considerable danger, yet was not active enough while on top to get the judges nod and now loses his opportunity at the Featherweight Champion.

Also on UFC on FX 4 Cub Swanson picked up an impressive TKO victory over British Slugger Ross Pearson. Pearson controlled Swanson with wrestling, but got caught with his unorthodox striking ability. Swanson connected with a front kick, followed by two straight rights to drop Pearson who was met with a left hook across the chin to end the bout. The Immortal Matt Brown picked up his third straight victory in 2012 with a second round TKO over Luis Ramos. Brown used his superior Muay Thai skills to dismember Ramos forcing the referee to stop the bout while they were both standing. Finally in his first drop to Welterweight a struggling Dam Miller went toe-to-toe with a very desperate Ricardo Funch. In a very evenly matched up bout that could have gone either way, Miller force Funch to tap out in the third not allowing it to go to the judges. Funch suffered his fourth UFC loss, while Miller bounced back from a two fight losing skid. (Full UFC on FX 4 event results below.)

Airing on MTV2 and Spike.com Bellator 71 took place at the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort in Chester, West Virginia. Bellator began their Summer Series with the opening round of the Light Heavyweight tournament.Travis Wiuff, Attila Vegh, Emanuel Newton and Tim Carpenter all advanced in the the semifinals by all finishing their fights. Wiuff was the only man to TKO his opponent, as he put Chris Davis away with a little more than 45-seconds in the first round. Meanwhile, the other tournament bouts ended via submission with Vegh submitting Zelg Galesic a rear-naked choke, as did Emanuel Newton over Roy Boughton. Tim Carpenter stepped in for Richard Hale as he and Carpenter’s original opponent John Hawk were inexplicably not present. Carpenter submitted Beau Tribolet with a second round  armbar to wrap up the tournament quarterfinals. The Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament will continue on July 20th from The University of South Florida as Travis Wiuff will battle Tim Carpenter while Attila Vegh will take on Emanuel Newton for an eventual shot at current Bellator Light Heavyweight champion Christian M’Pumbu.

Brett Rogers made his Bellator debut on the card defeating Kevin Asplund in two rounds. After taking a vicious assault, Asplund was unable to continue into the third round, giving Rogers the TKO doctor’s stoppage victory. (Full Bellator 71 event results below.)

Also on Friday night, UFC and STRIKEFORCE veteran John Salter headlined XFC 18: Music City Mayhem at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Salter’s claim to fame came at the hands of Jason MacDonald at UFC 113 in Montreal. During a takedown attempt MacDonald’s ankle snapped in a gruesome manner while sprawling, ultimately giving Salter the TKO victory; his lone victory in the promotion.  Salter’s opponent was Reggie Pena (9-5) came to fight improving his win streak to two with a second round guillotine choke, snapping Salter’s three fight win streak. Pulling double duty with a card on FX, the UFC returned on Saturday night with UFC 147: Silva vs. Franklin II from the Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Originally the main event was to be the coaches of Ultimate Fighter Brazil  facing off against each other, but due to injury Vitor Belfort was replaced by Rich Franklin to face Wanderlei Silva in a rematch from UFC 99 back in June of 2009; where Franklin picked up a controversial decision. Franklin would do it again, this time over five rounds. Franklin defeated Silva 49-46 on all three judges score cards.

The event was the third visit to Brazil for the UFC since being under the Zuffa banner, and was also the conclusion of the first international version of The Ultimate Fighter. The UFC crown the first two “TUF: Brazil” champions in the Middleweight and Featherweight division. For the Middleweight Cezar “Mutante” Ferreira decisioned his replacement fighter Sergio “Serginho” Moraes over three rounds to be the first “TUF: Brazil” Middleweight tournament winner. While Rony “Jason” Mariano Bezerra defeated Godofredo “Pepey” de Oliveira, also with a unanimous decision for the “TUF: Brazil” Featherweight tournament honors.

Fabricio Werdum picked up his second win in the UFC since returning fro STRIKEFORCE. Werdum made short work of Mike Russow with a first round TKO, handing Russow his second ever loss and snapping his 10-fight win streak. In the TV show grudge match the much more serious Rodrigo Damm defeated the show’s clown Anistavio “Gasparzinho” Medeiros very quickly with a rear-naked choke submission  midway through the first round. One FC held their fourth event Destiny of Warriors at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday. UFC, Bellator and STRIKEFORCE veterans Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Roger Huerta were featured on the card. Sobral who was slated to fight for Instinct MMA this month until Steve Bosse injured himself, returned to the cage for the first time after losing to Dan Henderson in December of 2010 for STRIKEFORCE. Sobral’s comeback was very impressive as he picked up 31-second armbar submission over Tatsuya Mizuno. Huerta saw his losing skid expand when Zorobabel Moreira connected with a second round soccer kick to the face rendering him unconscious. (Full One FC 4: Destiny of Warriors event results below.)

UFC & STRIKEFORCE veteran Scott Smith returned “home” to Gladiator Challenge, the promotion he fought 6 of his first 8 bouts with. In an attempt to snap his 4-fight losing streak, Smith took 9-18-1 fighter Marcus Gaines on Saturday night at Gladiator Challenge’s 142nd event at the Thunder Valley Casino Resort, Lincoln, California. Gaines was  riding a 3-fight win streak after a staggering 10-fight losing skid, but improved that streak to four handing Smith his fifth loss in a row. Smith was not even a challenge for Gaines who scored a first round TKO. (Gladiator Challenge event results below.)

Tune in Alert! UFC 147 Preview Following NHL Draft on TSN Radio 990

Be sure to tune into Ringside Report Radio on TSN Radio 990 following the NHL Draft (approx 10:15-10:30ish) this evening for a full UFC 147 preview. Dave & Kevin will be breaking bout each and every bout on the card. UFC 147 takes place at Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and airs on Facebook, FX, and Pay-Per-View on Saturday June 23rd. Headlined with the second meeting of Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva, and will featuring the crowning of the first TUF: Brazil champions in the Middleweight and Featherweight divisions.

Also on tonight’s program, Dave and Kevin will be discussing yesterday’s M-1 Global event that featured the retirement bout of Fedor Emlenianenko, as well as the ongoing results of both UFC on FX 4 and Bellator 71. All this and much more in approximately 2 hours on MMAgic.

Weekend in Fights! March 17th Edition

This St-Patrick’s Day Weekend in Fights! was jam packed with lots of MMA action. Including Bellator, Cage Warriors, Score Fighting Series, M-1 Challenge on Friday and  Ringside MMA, BAMMA USA, Kings of Kombat on Saturday.

 

MMAJunkie.com continued to air the series of Cage Warrriors events with Cage Warriors Fight Night 4, emanating from the Dubai World Trade Centre in the United Arab Emirates. The event was headlined with the Cage Warriors Heavyweight championship bout pitting Germain fighter Andreas Kraniotakes versus American fighter Mike Hayes. The bout never made itino championship rounds, as Hayes picked up the win and the title late in the third. With the win, Hayes (17-4) is now riding a five-fight win streak and is 9-1 in his past 10 fights. In an un-sportsman like conduct, Sheila Gaff  knockout Jennifer Maia in 10 seconds, as Maia attempted to touch gloves, but was met with a punch. (Full CWFN 4 event results below.)

On Friday night at Bellator 61 from The Horseshoe Riverdome in Bossier City, Louisiana, the quarterfinals of the Bellator Season 6 Middleweight Tournament took place with Maiquel Falcao, Vyacheslav Vasilevsky, Bruno Santos and Brian Rogers all picking up wins to advance to the semifinals. Of these four tournament battles, only Brian Rogers didn’t leave his decision in the hands of the judges, as he knocked out Vitor Vianna with vicious flying knee late in the first frame. The semifinal match ups will be Brian Rogers versus Bruno Santos, while Maiquel Falcao will battle Vyacheslav Vasilevsky at Bellator 66  on April 20th. On the under card of Bellator 61, contestant of WWE Tough Enough, Jeremiah Riggs return to MMA after alleging that he was “Blackballed” from wrestling. Unfortunately for him, his return to MMA and Bellator debut was not a successful one. Trey Houston, “upset” Riggs wih a first round submission victory. (Full Bellator 61 event results below.)

Canadian Sports Television Channel “The Score” continues their coverage, and promotion of local fight events with The Score Fighting Series 5. This event was held at Hamilton Place Theatre, in Hamilton, Ontario. The event was headlined by John Alessio and Ryan Healy. The back and forth bout saw both men unable to finish the other. Alessio wasn’t able to capitalize on his first round dominance, and lost the second round to Healy. The final round of the bout saw Alessio in top position, but again unable to finish, yet with the strong finish was able o get the nod from the judges. Forrest Petz defeated  Sergey Juskevic via TKO in the second round  in the fight of the night. In an exciting back and fourth bout, each fighter had chances to finish each other, as Juskevic dropped Petz in the first round. However,  Petz miraculously got back up and finished the bout in the second. Lyndon Whitlock picked up the knockout of the night when he dropped  Corey Houston with a counter right with only 32 seconds remaining in the first round. M-1 Challenge 31 took place at the Ice Palace, in St. Petersburg, Leningrad Oblast, Russia, with a Heavyweight main event of two grappling specialists in Jeff Monson and Alexey Oleinik. In a back a fourth battle, Monson came out the victor with a hard fought split decision. Rashid Magomedov captured his first champion in MMA, when he went the distance with Yasubey Enomoto. Brother of the greatest Heavyweight of all time, Aleksander Emelianenko picked a TKO victory early in the second round over Tadas Rimkevicius. Ringside MMA 13 – St-Patrick’s Day Beatdown was held at the Metropolis, in Montreal. Originally a nine bout card, was changed to seven. Kyle Nelson made his Pro MMA debut, in an action packed three round war against Mik Dufort in a very back and fourth bout. Dufort displayed an extremely tough chin, as he was on dream street multiple times during the bout, but continued. Olivier Aubain-Mercier return to action for his second bout, and just like his first ended in quick and impressive fashion with a rear-naked choke submission. Vladimir Starcencov pulled off an impressive Americana submission over Boxer Stephane Tessier. The hold was so wrenched back, it was a wonder why Tessier hadn’t tapped sooner. Mike Ricci bounced back from his championship loss at Ringside 12 in October. Ricci won a three round decision against Tony Hervey. During the first round, a stage light exploded, sending glass all over the mat, haulting the bout for several minutes. After losing the fight, Hervey grabbed the mic and told Ricci that he was a striker, and his lay and prey style sucked. In the main event of the evening, Paul Cheng made quick work of Eric Barrak, as he rushed him with strikes, took him down, and force him to verbally submit. BAMMA USA held their fifth event at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California, on Saturday with Bad Beat 5. Former 4-time UFC veteran, and assumed retired mixed martial artist Mike “The Joker” Guymon made his return to MMA, after announcing after his last UFC bout in January of 2011, that he was calling it quits. Guymon was successful in his return to the sport, with a second round TKO victory over Chris Leyva. Another former UFC combatant Gabe Ruediger continues his loosing skid to three, with he was knocked out by Scott Catlin in 36 seconds of the second round. Shamrock Events – Kings of Kombat 6  took place at the Springers Leisure Centre, Keysborough, Victoria, Australia. The event was a mix event that included MMA, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and Boxing bouts on the card. The event was headlined by former UFC Heavyweight/Light Heavyweight fighter James McSweeney versus Felise Leniu. McSweeney made shirt work of  Leniu, as he submitted him with a Rear-Naked Choke in the first round. (Full Shamrock Events – Kings of Kombat 6 event results below.)
