This Weekend in Fights! (December 10th) was one of epic proportions with the amazing bouts at UFC 140, as well as an M-1 Challenge card on Friday and BAMMA 8.

Friday night M-1 Global held their 30th Challenge card in Costa Mesa, California
at The Hangar at the OC Fair & Event Center on Showtime. The main event saw the crowning of a new M-1 Challenge welterweight champion as Yasubey Enomoto choked out Shamil Zavurov with guillotine choke with only 50 seconds left in the bout in a rematch from April of this year. In another rematch Artiom Damkovsky avenged his March TKO loss to Jose Figueroa by knocking him out in the first round. (Full M-1 Challenge 30: Zavurov vs. Enomoto event results below.)

In the main event of Saturday’s UFC 140 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Light Heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones set a few records, including the first man to submit Lyoto Machida and the first man since Chuck Liddell to defend the Light Heavyweight title more than once. In a tough first round for the champ, many saw Machida winning it 10-9, but Jones needed those five first minutes to measure up the former champ, as he admitted it to be the most confusing round of his career. Not only did Jones, submit Machida, but he choked him out cold with a standing guillotine. When the referee called a halt to the action, Jones released the hold for Machida to drop to the ground lifeless.

In the semi main event Frank Mir continued his win streak by breaking the arm of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira with a kimura. Mir appeared to be on wobbly legs after taking so hard punches from Nogueira, and immediately shot in for a takedown. This wasn’t beneficial to him either, as Nogueira slapped on an anaconda choke, but after some scrabbling Mir found himself in side control in position for a kirmura. Nogueira failed to roll out of the synched in submission twice, and his ego refused to allow him to tap as Mir continued to wrench his arm till in snapped.

Nogueira’s twin brother Antonio Rogerio Nogueira aka Lil Nog came out on top against Tito Ortiz, snapping his two fight losing streak with a TKO victory. Lil Nog came out strong defending Ortiz’s take downs and followed up with impressive Muay Thai, dropping Ortiz to the ground with a stiff knee to the ribs. Lil Nog jumped into Ortiz’s guard and pounded away at the former Light Heavyweight champion’s midsection until the referee end the bout.

The Korean Zombie Chan Sung Jung tied for the fastest knockout in UFC history with his seven second knockout of Mark Hominick. Hominick missed a wild punch he threw and was caught by Jung under the chin. Hominick dropped to the ground immediately where he was met with five unanswered punches from Jung.

The Hominick loss was just one of five losses for Canadian fighters on the card as Krzysztof Soszynski was knockout by Igor Prokrajac; Claude Patrick loss a split decision to Brian Ebersole. Mitch Clarke loss to John Cholish via TKO and John Makdessi tasted defeat for the first time in his career, when Dennis Hallman imposed his will on Makdessi, taking him down and ground and pounded his way to a rear naked choke. Only two Canadian fighters won their bouts as Mark Bocek defeated Nik Lentz via unanimous decision and Yves Jabouin took a split decision victory over Walel Watson. (Full UFC 140 event results below.)

BAMMA made their U.S. television debut on Saturday on HDnet, but due to technical difficulties the last two bouts didn’t make air. The event which imitated from Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England was headlined by undefeated light heavyweight Jimi Manuwa versus Antony Rea. The UCMMA Light Heavyweight champion Manuwa successfully kept his win streak alive, improving to 11 straight wins and defended his title for the sixth time when Rea couldn’t answer the bell after the very first round. “Judo” Jim Wallhead took out Joey Villasenor in just 48 second with a devastating knockout blow; improving to 2-0 in the promotion with wins over Villasenor and Frank Trigg since losing in the quarterfinals of the Bellator Welterweight tournament in March. Also on the card, former TUF alumi and UFC veteran Andre Winner picked up a unanimous decision victory over Deigo Gonzales. (Full BAMMA 8 event results below.)

Shane Carwin’s near year long return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship saw him leave the octagon a bloody mess after encountering the heavy hands of Junior Dos Santos at UFC: 131 in Vancouver, Canada.

The first round for Carwin was the complete opposite compared to his first round against Brock Lesnar. Dos Santos nailed some nasty ground and pound to close off the first round, so much so that Dos Santos looked to the official in amazement for not ending the fight right there. Carwin emerged with a crimson mask and looked like he was partially knocked out. Out of respect for Carwin’s ability to nail that one knockout punch, Dos Santos played it safe for the next two rounds as he punched and dodged to earn a title shot against UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Carwin’s original opponent before replacing Lesnar, Jon Olav Einemo battled Dave Herman in the fight of the night. Einemo looked like he rocked Herman just at the end of the first round and was able to secure a possible knockout victory, but the round ended just as Herman went down. In the second round Einemo continued to beat down on Herman with some serious knee shots and charging punches, but miraculously Herman nailed a strong knee that brought Einemo down. Einemo recovered to deliver a wicked slugfest back and forth with Herman that Herman got the best of in his UFC debut. Easily one of the most exciting fights of the year in the UFC.

Kenny Florian came back from being down a round to win an unanimous decision victory against Diego Nunes. Florian was awarded a title shot against UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo thanks to his win. Florian made his comeback by nailing a vicious elbow to the top of the head of Nunes. With Nunes dazzled, Florian was able to takedown Nunes and punish him on the ground. Nunes did not pass out, but was still beaten into a pool of his own blood.

The butterflies that fighters have before going through the entrance curtain, Florian explaining his drop to the featherweight division, and post fight comments are the features for the behind the scenes footage. Dos Santos explains that he was a bit nervous since there was a lot on the line in his fight, but he feels that he proved that he is quicker and has better boxing skills.

UFC: 131 was not the best UFC show this year, but there were a few moments that will definitely make the best of 2011 highlights. Best for fans that enjoy particular fighters or were anticipating one of the fights on the card.

championship belt. Fans can capture the submission specialist in action
LIVE on SHOWTIME on Friday, March 25 at 11 p.m. ET.

Riding solid momentum from back-to-back wins and victorious in four of his last five outings it seems that the three time BJJ world champion has a re-focused mindset.

In his first outing with M-1 Global this past December, Magalhaes executed
an impressive inverted triangle submission for the victory over Alihan
Magomedov, an excellent performance to mark his return to the ring after
being sidelined for the better portion of 2010 while rehabbing from knee
surgery. The win caught the attention of the M-1 Global executive team who
offered up a six-fight contract with Europe’s leading mixed martial arts
promotion; the battle with Doerr marks the slick submission specialist’s
first trip into the ring under the new 2-year deal.

As a world-class BJJ expert, Magalhaes currently trains and teaches at the
TapouT Training Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he’s dedicated to
evolving his skills in Wrestling, Muay Thai and Boxing; with a versatile
arsenal, Magalhaes has every opportunity to become one of the world’s best
light heavyweight fighters and a marquee name for the M-1 Global promotion.

A Black Belt under instructors Vinicius Aieta and Royler Gracie, Magalhaes
won thirteen matches – ten by submission – and took home two Gold Medals in the 2005 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship while still a Brown Belt. In 2007,
Magalhaes would become the first Jiu-Jitsu No Gi World Champion in the Super Heavy Weight Division as a Black Belt.

2009 marked an impressive year for Magalhaes at the ADCC Submission
Wrestling World Championship, where he took home a pair of bronze medals in the Under 99 kg and Absolute Divisions. On his way to win the bronze in his
weight Division, Magalhaes defeated BJJ World Champion Rodrigo Cavaca, the 2003 ADCC World Champion and two-time BJJ Absolute World Champion, Marcio Cruz, ADCC Brazil Trial Winner Glover Teixeira; the quest for gold ended with a loss by points to the eventual Champion Xande Ribeiro.

On his run for his second bronze, Magalhaes beat the 2005 ADCC Absolute
World Champion Dean Lister by Judges Decision, moving on to the
Quarter-Finals against the two-time NCAA Wrestler and MMA Prospect Chris
Weidman, who he beat with his patented ‘Flying Armbar’; the semi-final match against Braulio Estima ended with Magalhaes losing by points. In the 3rd Place match, Vinny scored a late takedown against Gunnar
Nelsonwhich guaranteed the win.

Magalhaes has also been instrumental in educating some of Europe’s top
prospects and M-1Global’s upcoming stable of young fighters by leading a
training seminar in Saint Petersburg, Russia late last year. Talking about
his experience, ‘Pezao’ was quick to point out the determination his pupils
possessed. “I’ve trained in Japan, Brazil, the United States and now Russia,
one thing that I can say is that the Russian fighters were some of the most
intense guys that I have ever been around. It’s clear they don’t have the
same resources we have in the U.S.A. but that doesn’t change how tough they
can be.”

A recognizable figure to the North American fan base, Magalhaes was part of
the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter where he went on to defeat Lance
Evans, Jules Bruchez and Krzysztof Soszynski, advancing to the TUF finals
against Ryan Bader where he lost by TKO.

Ready to continue making his impact felt within the 205-pound division,
Magalhaes is primed to make the most of his opportunity against Doerr on one of the United States’ most prestigious, premium television networks; a win places him atop the LHW food chain and directly into title contention.

Okami and Marquardt went into their encounter seeking a title shot at the middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Marquardt stunned Okami with impactful takedowns, but was not able to score considerable damage on Okami. For most of the fight, Okami controlled the cage as he pinned Marquardt to it on several occasions.

Okami also controlled the striking aspect of the fight. Marquardt looked like he had timing issues as he kept trying to nail that one big fatal punch. While Marquardt did nail Okami right on the chin with Okami charging with a knee, Okami showed his toughness and did not let it faze him at all. Okami left Marquardt bruised and bloody following the strikes that he landed. Marquardt did make another great takedown late in the third round, but Okami got right back up. Judges scored the fight 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27 in favour of Okami.

In the behind the scenes extras, Marquardt is shown with his team before the fight talking about what he eats and how he relaxes before his fight. While walking back to the locker room following his loss, Marquardt was devastated as he thought he did enough to win. His team told him that although he fought hard he fought Okami’s type of fight instead of his own.

Nick Osipczak slowing down in the third round cost him a split decision loss to Duane Ludwig in welterweight action. Osipczak looked like he had the fight won taking down Ludwig, but he could not finish him. By the third round Ludwig was able to nail mean punches and knee shots while Osipczak did his best to hang on the whole third round. Krzysztof Soszynski had a more even fight against Goran Reljic, as he had to wear down Reljic until the third round to have a clear advantage in the fight. Judges scored the fight 30-27 across the board for Sozynski.

In a special bonus feature added to the DVD, there is a Q & A session with UFC president Dana White and announcer Joe Rogan. White and Rogan discussed topics such as the chances of Jon Daily ever coming back to the UFC, their thoughts on the Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck fight before it went down, and the chances of Joe Rogan ever stepping foot inside a UFC octagon. One highlight included Rogan criticizing a Brock Lesnar fan saying Cain Velasquez winning was a fluke, “that’s a hell of a fucking fluke,” said Rogan. Other highlights saw White admitting the greatest of Anderson Silva as a fighter, and Rogan inviting an individual to come up on stage and do the ‘Buffer 360.’

For fans that have already seen the event on Spike TV, the Q & A and behind the scenes extras are nice additions. For fans that missed the prelims, you missed the best fight when Pascal Krauss took on Mark Scanlon in welterweight action. All the prelims as well as the weigh-ins are shown. Far from a star-studded UFC event, but solid mixed martial arts from top to bottom.

Brock Lesnar pounding Frank Mir to a bloody pulp is one of over 30 great knockouts on the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Ultimate Knockouts 8.

From UFC: 97 in Montreal to UFC: 113 in Montreal, the most stunning and brutal KOs from 2009 to 2010 are highlighted. Chuck Liddell’s fight against Shogun Rua is one of the rare fights that is shown from start until Rua breaks through Liddell’s defence.

The majority of the fight recaps usually end with an explosive knockout, like Lyoto Machida’s KO on Rashad Evans at UFC: 98 to capture the UFC Lightheavyweight Championship belt. The buckling of Evans’ knees and the rolling back of his eyes made it clear to everyone that Machida just knocked out Evans right on his feet. Fights also usually end after a big hook or a sudden trip followed by nasty ground and pound action. Vitor Belfort versus Rich Franklin is one of the rare times that a fighter decided not to pound away because they knew their opponent was out cold already. However, in the Mir against Shane Carwin fight, Carwin was beating down on a limp Mir and looked up at the ref who did not try to stop it until after a couple more bombs nailed Mir in the back of his head.

The Marcus Davis against Ben Saunders fight is one of the few fights that ended thanks to a knee shot. Easily one of the bloodiest KOs on the DVD as Davis took more than one shot to fall to the ground and looked like he was a lifeless body. Included in the DVD extras is a near seven-minute montage for Ultimate TKOs in the UFC during that period of time. Watching Kimbo Slice taking his final beating in the UFC are among the highlights in the short featurette.

Fans of sudden finishes and do not necessarily enjoy watching long fights get to enjoy a part of mixed martial arts that not only pleases boxing fans, but fight fans as well. Two gladiators battling and when they are both evenly matched, to see a KO scored is truly an amazing sight to behold. Some fight endings might seem questionable, but make no mistake you see a fighter get rocked in every fight.

Major Fight League (MFL) returns to Montreal for their fourth event on March 12, 2011 at the Centre Pierre Carbonneau with a double main event. Martin Désilets takes on Antony Rea, and in the co-main event Steve Vigneault challenges Matt MacGrath.

Martin Désilets (11-2) finally returns to Quebec MMA after a two year lay off due to legal issues prevented him from obtaining a fighting license. Since his last victory in Quebec against Todd Gouwenberg at XMMA 7: Inferno February 27th, 2009, he has defeated Victor Valimaki twice capturing the TFC Light Heavyweight Championship; making him the last champion, now that Aggression MMA has purchased TFC and all of its assets. Désilets has notable victories over UFC fighter Krzysztof Soszynski, and Rashad Evans’ brother, Lance Evans. His opponent, Antony “Wild Thing” Rea (20-13) is journey man with bouts in Brazil, England, Costa Rica, Macau, China and was last seen in Montreal in 2004 for APEX Championship Fighting. He also fought in for Stephane Patry’s now defunct UCC when they travelled to Hawaii losing to UFC fighter Rich Franklin. With no notable victories on his record, Rea has suffered defeat to Jason Guida, Marvin Eastman, and Vitor Belfort, but is on a three fight win streak. Rea is looking to make a big splash for his return to Montreal, but Désilets has knockout power in his hands and is looking to make a statement for his homecoming.

The Co-Main event of the evening features one of the pioneers of Quebec MMA, UFC, UCC and TKO veteran Steve “Lion Heart” Vigneault (12-6). Vigneault steps in the MFL cage for the first time since his comeback at Ringside MMA in November 2009. Before that victory over Dan Chambers in a middleweight bout, Vigneault had not fought since losing to Mike Swick in his UFC debut. After some talk about dropping down to the welterweight division, Vigneault will stay at middleweight to take on Matt MacGrath (9-5). With tough losses to over UFC vets Jonathan Goulet, Claude Patrick, and Kalib Starnes in his last bout; MacGrath is looking to stop the Lion Heart in his tracks in what promises to action packed fight.

Tristar prospect and cousin to Steve “Lion Heart” Vigneault and Stephane “Simba” Vigneault, Guillaume Vigneault made his pro MMA debut after an impressive amateur career, in Quebec City at Ringside MMA 7: Invasion with a rear naked choke submission victory over David Fraser.

GAMMA/BTT Canada fighters hit the cage as Lee Villeneuve and Lloyd Galindo (2-1) return to action. While only taking sporadic fights due to a career as stuntman, and trying out for The Ultimate Fighter, Villeneuve takes on Vanja Vojvodic (2-1). Vajovdic was last seen in Montreal at XMMA 5 in 2008, since then he has gone 1-1 fighting in Winnipeg. Vojvodic has a big text in front of him, as the big welterweight Villeneuve has looked virtually unstoppable. With a 1-1 record in the Netherlands, Galindo debuted on the Montreal circuit in impressive fashion when he was the only man to go past the first round with standout Daylin Logan. After the referee failed to see an illegal knee, Galindo was pulled into a rear naked choke for the loss. Now he returns in a revenge fight against Yohan Gariepy (2-2). Gariepy is coming off a lack luster decision victory over Jean-Francois Royer at Ringside MMA’s Rising Star on January 15th, 2011. Gariepy defeated Galindo’s teammate Benoit Guillonet by TKO, when he connected with a knee while Guillonet was shooting for a takedown.

In the only Bantamweight bout of the evening, Dimitri Waardenburg (7-4) is riding a five fight win streak with victories of Remi Morvan, Javier Munoz Umana, Chucky Mady, Mark Fraser, and Pierre-Etienne Marcoux. The Brussels, Belgium native is stepping back into the MFL cage to take on Winnipeg native Roland Delorme (6-1). With two victories of Remi Morvan, Delrome has only one blemish on his record that comes by split decision in his last bout against Eric Wilson in October of 2010 at CFC.
New York native and Tristar standout Joey Gambino (6-0) awaits his opponent to be determined, as he returns to the Montreal fight scene to defend his undefeated streak of six wins, including three TKO’s and three submissions.

After grinding out a three round decision victory at Ringside MMA’s Rising Star on January15th, Albert Cheng (2-0) returns to the cage. Standing across the cage from Cheng, is TKO & XMMA veteran Dave Pariseau (7-7-1). Pariseau has been absent for the Montreal fight scene since a submission loss to Derek “Sex Machine” Gauthier XMMA 7: Inferno. Now both will engage it what promises to be a great technical matchup.

The event also features Steve Begin, James Haourt, Pierre-Etienne Marcoux, Tommy Pariseau and many more.

UFC: Ultimate Submissions lives up to the name as UFC announcer Mike Goldberg takes you through 30 highlight reels of the most spectacular submission victories ever in UFC history. Not only do you get to see GSP tap out Matt Hughes for the interim UFC Welterweight Championship, there are 20 full (albeit short) fights featuring some of the most legendary showdowns in the UFC that ended in submission. The aspect video ratio is not high though on the full fights compared to the feature presentation.

Body triangles, omoplata, quite a few rear naked chokes, and the first battle between former UFC Heavyweight Champions Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir are all showcased. If you get grossed out easily by the dislocation of an arm or leg, this DVD might be too much for you. While the UFC is not as violent as Japan’s submissions, you do see clear as day Mir bending Tim Sylvia’s arm to the point that it looks broken. Breaking arms, twisting limbs disturbingly, choking the life out of another human, there is a primitive urge that can give someone an euphoric feeling after making their opponent give up after inflicting too much pain.

If you enjoy watching someone scream and pass out from pain, you’ve bought the right DVD. In the bonus feature there is a featurette dedicated to those fighters that will not tap no matter if they end up severely injured. Some submission victories might have only been used due to memorable moments like Nate Diaz giving the middle fingers before recording a victory over Kurt Pellegrino at UFC Fight Night 13. Regardless, you really get a good idea on who are the new UFC stars and the extra 20 fights help show you how the UFC used to be and how it has evolved in the Zuffa era.
