Chael Sonnen was about two minutes away from ending Anderson Silva’s Ultimate Fighting Championship Middleweight title reign when the resilient champ locked in a triangle armbar to end an action-packed UFC: 117 show.
Top to bottom UFC: 117 was one of the best presentations put on by UFC last year. Top contenders battled in the heavyweight and welterweight divisions. With hours of extra bonus material, the prelims, this UFC DVD is not one you should pass up on. To this day the Sonnen and Silva fight is still talked about for a variety of reasons.
Many who watch the fight can make the claim that Sonnen backed up all the trash talking that he made prior to the fight. Sonnen build himself up as one of the most hated arrogant jerks to ever step foot in the UFC. And that’s being nice about his antics. However, some will say Silva was a disrespectful champion after his taunting display during his fight at UFC: 112. Sonnen gained a bit of a following for those that were unimpressed with Silva’s abilities and long reign as champion.
Right from the first round Sonnen used his boxing and caught Silva with some haymakers. Silva tried to be cute by catching Sonnen’s feet, but Sonnen was able to roll away and easily won the first round when he took down Silva and pounded on him until the end of the round. Silva was able to score some devatasting looking kicks, but Sonnen’s wrestling was a bit quicker than Silva’s defence, at least until the fifth round. Unless Silva is defeated before Sonnen returns from his suspension, expect to see this fight happen again as that is what the majority of mixed martial arts fans want to see.
UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes against Ricardo Almedia is a surprisingly quick fight that went in the favour of Hughes this time around. A lot of stand up back and forth between the two until Hughes gets it to the ground and ends it lightning fast. Clay Guida against Rafael Dos Anjos is quite the opposite as it nearly goes the distance and is a lot more intense than the previous fight.
Jon Fitch versus Thiago Alves was originally going to decide who was going to face Georges St-Pierre in Montreal for UFC: 124. However, the UFC went in a different direction. Fitch dominated Alves with his wrestling game making Alves not even look like a serious threat to GSP’s championship reign. Alves also could not make weight for this fight as it was fought at a catch weight.
Guida’s training regime, Hughes showing you how to do a guard pass, Fitch showing you a transition off of a triangle, a day in the life of Roy Nelson, and much more is shown in behind-the-scenes footage. One of two neat bonus features is Vitor Belfort’s commentary on the Silva vs. Sonnen fight. Belfort will be facing Silva next week at UFC: 126. The second one, “I almost jumped up in the ring and kicked his ass myself,” said actor Steven Seagal to Silva following the victory.
