Ian McCall (11-2-1) made name for himself fighting on the local scene as Bantamweight fighter, which granted him a call from the WEC. With a successful WEC debut over Coty Wheeler, McCall stepped up in competition in a losing effort to Charlie Valencia and Dominick Cruz. Going 1-2 in the WEC with two consecutive losses, McCall was cut from the promotion and return to the local scene. McCall joined Lemoore, California based Tachi Palace Fights promotion in February of 2011, where he decided to drop down to the 125lbs Flyweight Division. McCall defeated then #1 ranked Flyweight Jussier De Silva on his debut, which he followed up with a win over Dustin Ortiz in May, and finally won the Tachi Palace Fights Flyweight Championship in August over Darrell Montague. On March 3rd, 2012, McCall joined the UFC as part of their newly formed Flyweight division, and competed in the inaugural tournament semi finals against Demetrious Johnson at UFC on FX 1. The rules stated, that if the fight were to be a draw after three rounds, that a sudden death fourth round would be implicated. However, after three rounds the Australian Athletic Commission mistakenly tallied the scores, giving the bout to Johnson. Once the mistake was corrected, it was determined that the bout was a draw and a rematch would have to take place in order to see who will meet Joseph Benavidez in the finals of the flyweight tournament. Ringside Report Radio was able to hear Demetrious Johnson’s thoughts on the manner, now we hear the other side, as McCall aka Uncle Creepy shares his thoughts.

Dave & Kevin will also be discussing the news from today’s UFC press conference in Calgary. The UFC announced that three major UFC Pay-Per-Views will take place in Canada in 2012, including UFC 149 in Calgary July 21st at the Scotiabank Saddledome , UFC 152 in Toronto, and UFC 154 in Montreal at the Bell Centre. All this and much more in 1 Hour on MMAgic.

This Weekend in Fights! included both Zuffa companies, the UFC kicking off their Flyweight tournament and STRIKEFORCE with the most talked about Women’s MMA fight. These two blockbuster events, ended in spectacular fashion with monumental finishes in their main events. Former Sengoku Middleweight Champion Jorge Santiago headlined Titan Fighting Championship’s 21st card and former STRIKEFORCE Women’s fighter Roxanne Modafferi was in action in Japan in the all Women’s MMA promotion Jewels.

It was Saturday in Sydney, Australia, but Friday night here in North America when the UFC presented UFC on FX 2: Alves vs. Kampmann. In the main event Thaigo Alves was on his way to a unanimous decision victory over Martin Kampmann with his striking prowess, but late in the third round Kampmann would take home the victory. Clearly winning the striking game, Alves attempted to score more points with the judges by taking Kampmann to the mat, but this would be Alves’ downfall, as the crafty Kampmann grabbed a hold of Alves’ head for a guillotine choke. Under a minute remaining in the final frame, Alves was forced to tap, as Kampmann mounted him with the guillotine.

That wasn’t the only impressive submission of the evening, as Daniel Pineda scored a superb arm triangle on Mackens Semerzier, and T.J. Waldburger unbelievably wrenched Jake Hecht’s arm in just 55 seconds for the win.

The UFC introduced a new weight class into the fold, as the inaugural Flyweight tournament kicked off. Special rules were put in place, as if the bout was a draw after three rounds, a sudden death fourth round would take place, and one was needed but never took place. Demetrious Johnson upset UFC newcomer Ian McCall by majority decision, in controversial fashion, as many saw rounds 1 & 3 going to McCall. After double checking their cards post event, it was determined that it was a draw, so as opposed to fighting a fourth round, a rematch between Johnson and McCall will take place at a later date. However, Joseph Benavidez didn’t leave his decision in the hands of the judges, when he took out Yasuhiro Urushitani in just 11 seconds of the second round, securing his position in the finals of the Flyweight tournament.

Also on the the card Constantinos Philippou handed Court McGee his first ever loss in the UFC snapping his eight fight winning streak in the process. Hometown heroes James Te Huna and Anthony Perosh both picked up impressive victories via TKO in the first round, but the same can’t be said about Kyle Noke, who lost a hard fought three rounder against the undefeated Andrew Craig. (Full UFC on FX 2: Alves vs. Kampmann event results below.)

Also on Friday night, Titan Fighting Championship broadcast their 21st event on HDNet at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas with the main event of Jorge Santiago knocking out Leonardo Pecanha in just under two minutes of the opening frame. Brother of UFC Welterweight Jake Ellenberger, Joe Ellenberger was also in action on this card. Ellenberger bounced back from his lone loss in MMA competition back in October, with a third round rear naked choke submission over Jesse Zeugin. Ellenberger now improves to 13-1. (Full Titan Fighting Championship 21 event results below.)

At STRIKEFORCE on Saturday night, Miesha Tate made history. Tate was the first ever woman to last over a minute with Ronda Rousey, in fact Tate made Rousey fight longer than all of her previous four fights combined. The fight only lasted 4:27 and it ended in classic Ronda Rousey fashion; arm bar. In what was probably the most exciting round in Women’s MMA history, Rousey displayed high level judo, superb Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and answered the question: “Can she take a punch?” anwser: “Yes she can!” Tate stormed in quickly with punches, and was immediately put on her back mounted and in position to be submitted with an arm bar. Tate was able to escape and assault her challenger with strikes, but as soon as she closed the distance, Rousey took advantage and hip tossed her to the mat, and secured her with the arm bar after landing a few hammer fists. With this victory Rousey improves to 5-0 in MMA and is the new STRIKEFORCE Women’s Bantamweight champion. Former STRIKEFORCE Women’s Bantamweight champion Sarah Kaufman was also victorious on the under card over Alexis Davis in a three round bloodbath, and aligns herself next for a shot at the strap.

Josh Thomson returned to STRIKEFORCE for the first time since October 2010. He fought a K.J. Noons in a three round war, with “the Punk” walking out with unanimous decision. Kazuo Misaki and Paul Daley also went to the judges score cards in a hard fought battle that saw Misaki take a split decision.

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Lumumba Sayers displayed their superior Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills . Jacare submitted Bristol Marunde in the final frame of their bout, where Sayers submitted Scott Smith in the first round, handing his fourth loss in a row. (Full STRIKEFORCE: Tate vs. Rousey event results below.)

Former STRIKEFORCE Women’s fighter Roxanne Modefferi was in action on Saturday night in Japan for the all-woman MMA organization Jewels. It wasn’t a happy night for “The Happy Warrior” as she suffered her fifth loss in a row to Takayo Hashi (14-4) by unanimous decision in a Flyweight (125lbs) bout. (Full Jewels – 18th Ring event results below.)

Josh Barnett moves up from 7th to 5th ranked heavyweight in the world with a first round submission win over Sergei Kharitonov in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-finals on September 10.
This is the second installment of the Ringside Report official MMA Top 10 rankings.

There was some movement in the heavyweight division rankings in August. Fedor Emelianenko drops out of the Top 10 with a loss to Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight champion Dan Henderson on July 30. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira moves back into the Top 10 Heavyweights in the world with an impressive knockout victory over Brendan Schaub. Nogueira had been absent from the octagon since February of 2010 when he lost to Cain Velasquez.

Henderson’s victory bumps him up to 6th on the list while Miller drops to 7th. The fact that Anthony Pettis is one of the few men to hold a victory over Henderson is enough to move him from 8th ranked in August, to 5th in September. The fact that Clay Guida is one of the few to hold a win over Anthony Pettis will also earn him a boost in the rankings as he switches places with Jim Miller and goes from 7th to 4th. Shinya Aoki and Eddie Alvarez move from 5th and 6th respectively to 8th and 9th due to their lack of facing top 10 level competition.
