The five-year mixed martial arts journey for former Ultimate Fighting Championship Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar, came to a devastating and violent end near the final hours of 2011 at UFC: 141 against K-1 kickboxer Alistair Overeem.
Overeem’s powerful knee strikes left Lesnar gasping for air and open for huge fists that gave Overeem the victory early in the first round. Despite how quick Lesnar lost, like the majority of his fights it was still exciting to see how a huge specimen like Lesnar could be defeated. The bout was billed as the biggest in the UFC as both men weighted in at over 250 lbs and both were over 6’2. This marks the first and perhaps only time Overeem competed for the UFC. Recently he failed a drug test, which might change this victory into a no contest.
In the behind the scenes DVD footage, Lesnar gives no post-fight comments, but the In His Own Words featurette is an insightful look on how Lesnar sees his competition and where he stands in the UFC heavyweight division. Frank Mir gives his commentary on nearly the entire Lesnar fight and how shocked he was that Lesnar announced his retirement. Overeem just states that this is a big deal and a big moment for him and the UFC.
In a bloody and brutal battle, Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone captured the Fight of the Night award with a stellar three round performance in the semi-main event. Diaz proved that he is a great striker, by out boxing Cerrone. Diaz also showed that he can battle through adversity as Cerrone was having success with leg kicks and a few wild haymakers, but besides tripping a couple of times Diaz was clearly the dominate fighter. With the win Diaz has won himself a no. 1 contender’s match for the UFC Lightweight Championship against Jim Miller.
For years Jon Fitch has been considered one of the top welterweights in the UFC. Unfortunately for Fitch he got caught early against Johny Hendricks and was finished in 12 seconds. The phrase ‘don’t blink’ is used quite a bit in combat sports, but it’s appropriate in this situation.
