Following Miz’s loss of the WWE Championship to Cena at WWE: Extreme Rules 2011, Miz had the difficult task of defeating Cena in a match Cena has never lost. Although Miz and Riley try to pull off a similar ending that The Rock and Mankind did at WWE: Royal Rumble 1999, their plan backfired and Cena took advantage of the brief relief from the handicap match situation. In the only home video exclusive, Cena explains how the match reminded him of his brothers ganging on him.
Over The Limit also featured a World Heavyweight Championship bout that saw Randy Orton defend against former champion Christian. In arguably the match of the night, both men had a thrilling back-and-forth encounter. Although this was their first pay-per-view encounter, their match from Smackdown! played a major part as both men used a lot of counters allowing for some amazing near-fall finishes and heart pounding action until the three count.
Sin Cara made his PPV debut for WWE against veteran Chavo Guerrero. Cara has been groomed as the next Rey Mysterio, however that comes with high expectations. This match is considered controversial as online feedback felt the match was either good lucha libre or a showcase of how Cara is struggling with the WWE style of entertainment. Cara did perform some fantastic aerial maneuvers, however his takedown attempts looked weak at times and the ending of the match also looked weak. Judge for yourself to see why Cara may not be on WWE PPVs for a while.
For the first time in nearly two decades WWE had Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler compete in a ‘Kiss My Foot’ match. Lawler went up against his broadcast partner and rival for the past two WWE PPVs Michael Cole. Lawler finally put an end to this announcer war and was able to get Jim Ross and Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart in on the foot kissing.
While Over The Limit will never be confused with a WrestleMania line-up, WWE did pull off some intriguing matches and put an end to long feuds. For that reason this event was best suited after WrestleMania instead of Extreme Rules. Fans of the Orton-Christian feud definitely need to see their match from this event as it is easily their best to date.
