FIELD FINALIZED FOR THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER 17 ON FX

January 9, 2013 By admin

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 9, 2013) – Tuesdays just got TUF™. On January 22, TUF-17-Postersome of the world’s most talented and determined mixed martial artists will face-off in the most grueling sports tournament on television. Watch as 28 mixed martial arts prospects battle for a coveted spot on the new season of The Ultimate Fighter®, which begins with a special two-hour premiere airing at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FX.

The Ultimate Fighter, the Ultimate Fighting Championship®’s long-running reality television series, will run for 13 weeks and will culminate in a three-hour finale, live from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. Unlike previous seasons on FX, the one-hour broadcast will now be shown on Tuesday nights at its new regularly scheduled timeslot of 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The 14 successful combatants will be divided into two teams, which will be coached by two of the fiercest rivals in all of sport. UFC® light heavyweight champion and MMA superstar, Jon “Bones” Jones will captain one team, while the controversial and charismatic challenger Chael Sonnen will lead the second team into battle in this, the 17th installment of the series.

The coaches will then collide for the light heavyweight title on Saturday, April 27, at UFC® 159: JONES vs. SONNEN at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Not surprisingly, both Jones and Sonnen will be bringing their trademark self-confidence into their stints as coaches this season on The Ultimate Fighter.

“I thought it would be a good way to share myself with the sport of MMA,” Jones said. “I embrace the role.”

Said Sonnen: “The hottest show on FX is being graced with the greatest talent God ever made: Chael P. Sonnen.’’

The list of finalists in the middleweight (185 pounds) division was trimmed from more than 250 applicant athletes. The fighters – all seeking the opportunity of a lifetime and a six-figure contract from the Ultimate Fighting Championship – hail from the United States, Australia, England and Sweden.

“The quality of guys we have this season in unbelievable,” said UFC President Dana White. “From the fights to get into the house, to every single fight this season, I think the talent is some of the best I’ve ever seen on this show. We’re going to end up with some really good guys in the 185-pound division.”

“The production value has increased, the talent level is at an all-time high, and we have two of the most dynamic personalities in all of the UFC as our coaches,” said Chuck Saftler, EVP of FX Networks. “I’m extremely excited about this season of The Ultimate Fighter and truly believe this could be the show’s best season yet.”

On Jan. 22, the season will launch with 14 gripping elimination scraps. Those victorious in the opening round, or “Fight In”, become official cast members and earn their place in The Ultimate Fighter house in Las Vegas. The winners will be drafted into opposing teams of seven by Jones and Sonnen. Thereafter, cameras will document their activity before and after their training and fights during the season.

Each episode’s winners will advance in the single-elimination tournament until one is crowned The Ultimate Fighter.

Weekend in Fights! October 13th Edition

October 17, 2012 By Kevin

This Weekend in Fights! (October 3rd, 2012) featured the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the history of MMA Anderson Silva at UFC 153 in Brazil, Bellator 76 in Windsor, UFC veterans at Fight Festival 32 in Finland and at Made For War in Colorado.

Bellator 76 kicked off the weekend in Windsor, Ontario at the Caesars Windsor Hotel & Casino on Friday night. The event was headlined by Bellator’s last remaining superstar and former Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in his potential final bout with the promotion considering his contract has expired. After taking a little bit of punishment from the get go, Alvarez was able to knockout his long time rival Patricky “Pitbull” Freire with a head kick followed by punches with six seconds remaining in the bout. Alvarez’ Bellator future is uncertain if he will resign with the promotion where he went 9-1 considering following the bout UFC president Dana White tweeted to him: “”Congrats bro. Let’s talk.”

Bellator 76 also featured the opening round of the season seven lightweight tournament. Rad Martinez, Wagnney Fabiano, Mike Richman, and Shahbulat Shamhalaev all punched their tickets into the semifinals. Martinez went the distance with the much more experienced Nazareno Malegari, beating him on all three judges score cards 30-27. Meanwhile 38-year-old Fabiano submitted Akop Stepanyan with an arm bar in the first round. Both Richman and Shamhalaev picked up first round KO/TKO victories in their bouts. Richman knocked out Jeremey Spoon with a kick and punch combo, and Shamhalaev TKO’d Cody Bollinger with 11-seconds remaining in the opening frame. (Full Bellator 76 event results below.)

As the UFC 2012 injury plague continued, two members of Team BlackHouse stepped up to save UFC 153 when UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo was forced out of his title defense. Those two fighters were Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Anderson Silva. Not only did Silva step up and take the fight on short notice, but also stepped up in weight class to the Light Heavyweight division. Silva proved that beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is the best pound for pound fight of all time. Silva stood with his back against the cage, his hands at his hips in front of Stephan Bonnar and allowed Bonnar to strike him or attempt to strike him with his head movements. Bonnar clinched with Silva and was met with a devastating knee to the sternum that sent him crashing to the mat in agony. With Bonnar curled up on the canvas, Silva proceeded to pound away until the referee stopped the assault.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira displayed some beautiful “Nogueira Jiu-Jitsu” with a second round armbar submission of fellow Heavyweight competitor  Dave Herman. Both fighters duked it out during the better part of the first two rounds where Herman almost saw himself knocked out for his efforts, but in the end it was Nogueira’s submission skills that concluded the bout in his first bout since his arm was broken 10-months prior.

Light Heavyweight prospect Glover Teixeira pounded Fabio Maldonado’s face into a distorted swelled up mess for two rounds. Maldonado was outclassed, but did connect with a huge right hand that many saw as changing the tides. However, the bout continued due to Teixeira’s strong chin and relentlessness. During the second bout the doctor’s entered the octagon to ensure the safe of Maldonado, but after the conclusion of the second round refused to allow him to continue, thus resulting in a TKO after two rounds.

Jon Fitch picked up his first win since his surprising knockout loss to Johny Hendricks in February, by handing Erick Silva his first ever “real” loss via unanimous decision. Fitch’s great wrestling, striking, submission offense and defense proved to be better over three rounds. Also on the card, Phil Davis handed Wagner Prado his first pro loss with an anaconda choke submission late in the second round. Former Middleweight competitor Demian Maia continued his successful Welterweight career with a first round rear-naked choke submission of Rick Story. Ultimate Fighter Brazil winner Rony Jason continues to be undefeated in the octagon and his picked up a TKO victory over  Sam Sicilia in the third round. (Full UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar event results below.)

Fight Festival out of Finland held their 32nd event of Saturday at the Töölön Kisahalli in Helsinki, Finland. Headlining the event was UFC and Bellator veteran Yoshiyuki Yoshida picked up a guillotine submission victory over Niko Puhakka in the third round. The Jackson’s MMA Welterweight scored his fourth straight victory since dropping two in the UFC and losing his Bellator debut. (Full Fight Festival 32 event results below.)

Made For War MMA promotion held their inaugural event at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock, Colorado on Saturday night. Two UFC veterans were featured on the card with Joe “Diesel” Riggs in the main event and TUF season 6 runner up Tommy Speer in the co-main event. Riggs knocked out Josh Cavan near the end of the first round to pick up his fourth straight victory. Tommy Speer added another loss to his skid, with two as his was on the receiving end of a TKO loss at the hands of Jeremy Kimball mid way through the second round. (Full Made For War 1 event results below.)

The 10 bout card featured an interim KOTC Middleweight championship bout between Josh Bryant and Shonie Carter. Current KOTC Middleweight champion Sean Strickland was original scheduled for the event, but after pulling out of his bout the interim match up was made. Bryant captured the interim Middleweight title with a second round TKO over Carter. On the undercard of amateur bouts Tim Sosa defeated Todd Hess via TKO to capture the vacant KOTC amateur Jr Flyweight title. (Full King of The Cage: Heavy Duty Event results below.)

Tulsa wasn’t the only place in Oklahoma to hold an event on Friday night as the XFL, no not that XFL, but the Xtreme Fight League held their ninth event at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tulsa, 15 miles east of Tulsa, in Catoosa, Oklahoma. Xtreme Fight Night 9 was headlined by undefeated fighter Andrew Todhunter, who defeated 5-20 fighter Brandon Gaines with a rear-naked choke submission in the second round. Feature UFC veterans Jake Rosholt and Anthony Johnson in Light Heavyweight action. Going into this bout both fighters had identical 12-4 records. Johnson defeated  Rosholt with a head kick in the second round. (Full XFL: Xtreme Fight Night 9 event results below.)

Emanating from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto UFC 152 was by far the biggest MMA event of the weekend. In the main event Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones made his fourth successful title defense with a fourth round Americana submission victory over challenger Vitor Belfort. In the first round it appeared that Belfort would capture the championship when he secured Jones’ arm in an amrbar. The arm would appear to snap, but Jones did not tap and continued to dominate Belfort for the remainder of the bout. Jones would then proceed to work short elbows  in Belforts guard. In the thrid round Jones connected with a beautiful spin kick that dropped Belfort followed by a stomp to the belly. Jones would take Belfort down early in the fourth round, transition to side control, where he connected with elbows before submitting him for the win. Jones is now tied with Chuck Liddell for second most Light Heavyweight title defenses with four. Jones may have retained his championship, but in the process may have nerve damage in his arm.

UFC crowned their first ever Flyweight champion in the co-main event. Grand prix finalists Demetrious Johnson and  Joseph Benavidez went the distance to determine the champion. After five rounds the judges rendered the decision a split one with Johnson getting the nod on two judges score cards 49-46, 48-47, and Benavidez getting 48-47 on one judges score card. With that Johnson is the first ever UFC Flyweight champion in what was a very close fight.

Top 10 Middleweights Michael Bisping and Brian Stann collided in a potential title eliminator. Michael Bisping defeated Brian Stann via unanimous decision by out wrestling and out-boxing him, and continues to campaign for a title shot against current Middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Three of four Canadians on the card were successful, as Mitch Gagnon picked up his first UFC win with a first round rear-naked choke submission over Walel Watson. T.J. Grant picked up a unanimous decision victory over Evan Dunham, and hometown boy Sean Pierson escaped near knockout in the third round to pick up the unanimous decision over Lance Benoist. The lone Canadian to not achieve successful. was the debuting Roger Hollett. The product of Jackson’s MMA was unable to get the advantage over the returning Matt Hamill.

Also impressive on this stacked card was the return of Vinny Magalhaes, who forced Igor Igor Pokrajac  to tap to an arm bar for his sixth victory in a row. Cub Swanson destroyed Charles Oliveira with a first round TKO. Kyle Noke made his successful Welterweight debut with a 45 second knockout of Charlie Brenneman. Finally Marcus Brimage handed Jim Hettes his first ever loss with a decision. (Full UFC 152: Jones vs. Belfort event results below.)

Weekend in Fights! July 21st Edition

July 23, 2012 By Kevin

This Weekend in Fights! (July 21st, 2012) featured UFC 149 in Calgary, Bellator 72 in Tampa, and Cage Warriors 48 in London.

Bellator 72 kicked off the weekend airing bouts on MTV 2 and Spike.com from the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida on Friday.
Bellator 72 was headlined with the Season 6 Welterweight tournament final. Karl Amoussou submitted Bryan Baker with a beautiful inverted heel hook in just under one minute. With the victory Amoussou wins the Bellator Season 6 Welterweight tournament, $100,000, and is granted a shot at current Bellator Welterweight champion Ben Askren later this year.

Travis Wiuff and Attila Vegh both advanced into the finals of teh Bellator Season 6 Light Heavyweight tournament. In his semifinal match up Wiuff dominated Tim Carpenter for three rounds with his superior wrestling and overall experience with all three rounds 30-27. Attila Vegh surprisingly edged out Emanuel Newton in their semifinal match up. Newton pushed the pace throughout the bout connecting with a lot more strikes, and was clearly the aggressor. Nonetheless the questionable judges ruled in favor of Vegh, who will meet Wiuff in the tournament finals later this year for a shot at Christian M’Pumbu, who Wiuff defeat last fall in a non-title match.

Marius Zaromskis and Waachiim Spiritwolf closed out their trilogy. Their first bout in STRIKEFORCE ended in a no contest due to an eye poke to Spiritwolf. In their second bout in May of this year for Bellator, Zaromskis lucked up by cut Spiritwolf to the point he couldn’t continue into the third round in a bout he was winning. In their bout of Friday,  Zaromskis kept his distance from  Spiritwolf, moving in and out with his attacks in what looked like a unanimous decision, but in another baffling ruling one judge saw the bout in favor of Spiritwolf, while the others for Zaromskis, including one 30-27. Zaromskis picks up the split decision and wraps up the trilogy 2-0-1.

Former UFC and STRIKEFORCE veteran, Paul Daley made his Bellator debut in vintage Daley fashion. In a very lopsided match up, as expected the British slugger made short work of  Rudy Bears. Daley connected with a flurry a knees in the Muay Thai clinch, followed up by his trademark left hook that dropped Bears to the ground in a turtle position, where he was met with a few strikes before the referee intervened. Also with an impressive knockout during the night, Ben “Killa Bee” Saunders used his trademark Muay Thai clinch knees to destroy Brian Warren. Saunders rushed him immediately, pulled him into the clinch where his relentless assault began and ended the bout in 22-seconds. (Full Bellator 72 event results below.)

UFC crowned an Interim Bantamweight champion on Saturday night at UFC 149 from the Scotiabank Sattledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The main event of the evening saw Renan Barao dominated Urijah Faber throughout five rounds to win a unanimous decision with scores of 49-46, 50-45 and 49-46 to become the UFC interim Bantamweight champion.  Landing a significant amount of strikes, Barao’s game plan was semi reminiscent of his teammate Jose Aldo’s bout with Faber in 2010, with leg kicks and takedown defense. Barao stiffled Faber from having any offense whatsoever causing him to lose for the fifth straight time in a title fight in a row. Barao continues his unprecedented undefeated streak to 29 straight victories. With current UFC Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz out of action for an undisclosed period of time Barao is expected to defend the championship before the unification bout takes place.

Tim Boetsch spoiled Hector Lombard’s UFC debut and snapped his 25-fight win streak with a  split decision victory. The former Bellator Middleweight champion’s debut was highly anticipated as the holder of 17 knockouts was though of as the potential next challenger for the Middleweight title. The bout was very back and forth, but fans expected more from Lombard who had difficulty taking Boetsch and closing the distance. Boetsch was the aggressor with leg kicks and hooks walking away with the victory. Boetsch now positions himself in the mix as the next challenger to Anderson Silva, but that remains to be scene.

Matt Riddle and Chris Clements had an exciting back and forth bout that saw Riddle attempt a rear-naked choke for a period of time during the second round. While in Riddle’s body triangle Clements connected with a huge elbow, but enable to finish the bout with his positioning. During the third round while against the cage Riddle slapped on an arm-triangle choke from the standing position, dropped to the ground forcing Clements to tap.

In the three first round knockouts of the night, Ryan Jimmo made his UFC debut by tying the record for fastest knockout set by Duane Ludwig of seven seconds. Jimmo improved his win streak to 17 when he walked up to Anthony Perosh threw one punch sending him to the ground. The record would have been broken if referee Josh Rosenthal would have made it to the fighters quick than he had. Francisco Rivera used his superior boxing to drop submission specialist Roland Delorme with 41-seconds remaining in the  round. Delorme simply walked into Rivera’s punch, sending him crashing to the mat. Antonio Carvalho picked up his first UFC win with his knockout of  Daniel Pineda in 71-seconds. Carvalho connect with a head kick and a few punches dropping Pineda, who got up immediately, yet was wobbly. Moments later Carvalho connect with a big right hand, sending Pineda to the mat unconscious. (Full UFC 149: Faber vs. Barao event results below.)

Cage Warriors held their 10-year anniversary show at HMV Forum in London, England streaming the bouts of Facebook and MMAJunkie.com.  Cage Warriors 48 was headlined with a Cage Warrior’s Middleweight tournament semifinal match between John Phillips and Chris Fields. With Fields missing a high kick, Phillips landed a few big shots, but was taken down and mounted.  Phillips defended Fields ground and pound assault for a period of time, and managed to get back to his feet, but was taken down once against before the round ended. This would continue into the second round, as Fields once again took Phillips with easy. All of a sudden Fields is stuck in a guillotine and taps out. With this victory Phillips advances in into the Cage Warrior’s Middleweight tournament finals for the vacant championship to face Pavel Kusch on Sept. 1 in Amman, Jordan, in a rematch from an April bout in which Kusch made short work of  Phillips by submitting him with a heel hook in 25 seconds. (Full Cage Warriors 48 event results below.)

Weekend in Fights! July 7th Edition

July 8, 2012 By Kevin

This Weekend in Fights! (July 7th, 2012) featured the two best Middleweights in the world in the fight of the year at UFC 148. The pound-for-pound greatest MMA fighter of all time, UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen collided in a highly anticipated rematch from UFC 117 in August of 2010. No other major or small promotions with any fighters of merit held events this weekend, which would have been silly to attempt to compete with UFC’s biggest show of the year.

UFC 148 took place at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Anderson Silva defended his UFC Middleweight title for the 10th time with a second round TKO of Chael Sonnen. In the first round Sonnen immediately took Silva down with a double leg takedown controlling the champion from various guard positions. Sonnen connected with ground and pound from guard, half guard and full mount, while Silva did everything possible to prevent the action from being halted. The second round lasted less than two minutes as Silva had good takedown defense. With Silva pinned up against the cage, Sonnen attempted a swinging back fist that resulted in him losing his balance and falling to the ground. SIlva connected with a devastating knee to the solar plexus and proceeded to hammer down strikes to the defenseless Sonnen resulting in the bout coming to an end at 1:55. Silva continues his 15-0 undefeated streak in the UFC with the most title defenses and longest reign in the promotion’s history. Sonnen drops to 6-3 in the UFC with two consecutive loses to Silva.

UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz had his retirement bout against Forrest Griffin. The two former UFC Light Heavyweight champions stepped into the cage for the third time in the rubber match with Ortiz winning their bout in 2006, Griffin winning in 2009 and again in 2012. After three rounds the judges rendered a unanimous decision for Griffin who had a significant number of strikes over the former longest reigning champion Light Heavyweight champion in UFC history. Ortiz had glimpses of greatest during each round with a takedown in the first that saw Ortiz connect with a lot of ground and pound. After that initial flurry Ortiz was visibly gassed out and continued to struggle for the remaining two rounds. Ortiz did connect with a few power shots that saw Griffin drop to the ground, but he was unable to capitalize due to exhaustion. Griffin conducted a post fight interview with Ortiz and sending him off into retirement on a losing note.

Former STRIKEFORCE Middleweight champion Cung Le played spoiler for the octagon return of Pat Cote.Cote started the bout with a takedown attempt, but Le stuffed it using Cote’s momentum and dumped him on his back setting the pace for the remainder of the bout. The 40-year-old  Le used his superior striking ability to keep Cote at bay and get the judges nod. Le connected with a beautiful spinning heel kick that busted the  side of Cote’s head causing blood to spill out. Cote pushed the pace with some great boxing combinations, but Le’s unorthodox style kept Cote guessing.

Demian Maia was successful in his first drop to Welterweight with a 47-second TKO victory over Dong Hyun Kim. Clinching against the cage, Maia took Kim down with a judo throw causing Kim to land awkwardly on his head and injury his rib. With the takedown Maia landing in full mount a threw one punch and immediately stopped as he could see that Kim was injured.

After losing for the first time in his career back at UFC 142 in a Featherweight championship match against Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes returned to his winning ways with a 31-second TKO of Cody McKenzie. Mendes caught a kick from McKenzie and connected with a devastating body shot to the navel area. McKenzie dropped to the ground where he was met with four ground and pound shots rendering him unconscious.

In a three round war Ivan Menjivar’s 3-fight win streak was snapped by the now 13-1 Mike Easton. It appeared that Menjivar couldn’t find his range and caught a nasty head kick and flying knee from Easton. Easton connected with more combinations and was the obvious aggressor throughout all three rounds. (Full UFC 148 – Silva vs.  Sonnen II event results below.)

Weekend in Fights! June 23rd Edition

June 25, 2012 By Kevin

This Weekend in Fights! (June 23rd, 2012) featured two UFC events, Bellator kicking off their Light Heavyweight tournament, XFC 18, ONE FC 4, Gladiator Challenge, and the retirement bout of “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emenlianenko.

Fedor kicked off the weekend on Thursday night for M-1 Global at the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. Emelianenko squared off against Pride, Affliction veteran and former UFC Heavyweight title contender Pedro Rizzo. In classic Fedor fashion the bout ended in 84-seconds. Missing his chance to end it early with a flurry of strikes, Emelianenko connected with some leg kicks that were followed up by a combination that ultimately put Rizzo to sleep. Arguably the greatest Heavyweight of all-time, Emelianenko ends his glorious career on a three fight win streak with a total MMA record of 34-4.

The M-1 Global Heavyweight title was unified on the card, as Interim champion Kenny Garner took on champion Guram Gugenishvili. Garner battled Gugenishvili to the point of exhaustion over three rounds. With a rear-naked choke attempt in the first and defensive leg kick combinations Gugenishvili controlled most of the first two frames. In the third Garner connected with a combination of an uppercut and multiple hooks to rock Gugenishvili, who was saved by the bell. With the extensive damage to his face and completely exhausted, Gugenishvili was unable to continue, snapping is 11-fight win streak and title reign. With the victory Garner unifies the titles and continues to ride a six fight win streak.

Former UFC title contender Jeff Monson was also featured on the card, much like Fedor in the main event ending his fight is classic fashion, Monson did the same. Monson used his signature north-south choke to submit Denis Komkin in under two minutes. Scoring his eighth north-south choke submission victory of his carrer, the highly decorated grappler shot in quickly, avoided a guillotine choke attempt from Komkin, only to place himself in position to squeeze in his choke for the force tap. (Full M-1 Global – Fedor vs. Rizzo event results below.)

UFC on FX 4 took place at the Revel Atlantic City in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Friday night. Top 10 Ranked Lightweights Clay Guida (#7) and Gray Maynard (#3) met in the five round main event. The two very strong wrestlers had a striking war, that saw Maynard find his range in the later rounds on a very energetic Guida. Guida mostly bounced around the cage throwing various combinations, but once Maynard was able to close the distance he was able to connect. After the full five rounds the two judges saw the bout for Maynard and one for Guida, handing Maynard the split decision victory.

With one a piece Spencer Fisher and Sam Stout had their trilogy bout in the co-main event. In his UFC debut at UFC 58 in 2006, Stout won their first meeting with a split decision. The two would meet again 14-months later at UFC Fight Night 10, where Fisher got the judges nod. Five years later they would conclude their trilogy in yet another decision bout, with Stout finalizing it unanimously. In what Fisher was claiming could possibly be his final fight, he was out classed in a three rounds with the much improved wrestling game of Stout who won each round 10-9.

Ricardo Lamas played spoiler to potential title contender Hatsu Hioki with a unanimous decision. Lamas spent the majority of the bout on his back, holding Hioki in a head lock attempting to sink in a guillotine choke. Hioki was in the mount position and was never in an considerable danger, yet was not active enough while on top to get the judges nod and now loses his opportunity at the Featherweight Champion.

Also on UFC on FX 4 Cub Swanson picked up an impressive TKO victory over British Slugger Ross Pearson. Pearson controlled Swanson with wrestling, but got caught with his unorthodox striking ability. Swanson connected with a front kick, followed by two straight rights to drop Pearson who was met with a left hook across the chin to end the bout. The Immortal Matt Brown picked up his third straight victory in 2012 with a second round TKO over Luis Ramos. Brown used his superior Muay Thai skills to dismember Ramos forcing the referee to stop the bout while they were both standing. Finally in his first drop to Welterweight a struggling Dam Miller went toe-to-toe with a very desperate Ricardo Funch. In a very evenly matched up bout that could have gone either way, Miller force Funch to tap out in the third not allowing it to go to the judges. Funch suffered his fourth UFC loss, while Miller bounced back from a two fight losing skid. (Full UFC on FX 4 event results below.)

Pulling double duty with a card on FX, the UFC returned on Saturday night with UFC 147: Silva vs. Franklin II from the Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Originally the main event was to be the coaches of Ultimate Fighter Brazil  facing off against each other, but due to injury Vitor Belfort was replaced by Rich Franklin to face Wanderlei Silva in a rematch from UFC 99 back in June of 2009; where Franklin picked up a controversial decision. Franklin would do it again, this time over five rounds. Franklin defeated Silva 49-46 on all three judges score cards.

Sobral’s comeback was very impressive as he picked up 31-second armbar submission over Tatsuya Mizuno. Huerta saw his losing skid expand when Zorobabel Moreira connected with a second round soccer kick to the face rendering him unconscious. (Full One FC 4: Destiny of Warriors event results below.)

UFC & STRIKEFORCE veteran Scott Smith returned “home” to Gladiator Challenge, the promotion he fought 6 of his first 8 bouts with. Gaines was  riding a 3-fight win streak after a staggering 10-fight losing skid, but improved that streak to four handing Smith his fifth loss in a row. Weekend in Fights! June 9th Edition

June 9, 2012 By Kevin

This Weekend in Fights! (June 9th, 2012) saw only two events take place with the UFCon FX 3 and Aggression FC 9.

Kicking off the Friday night of fights was UFC on FX 3 from BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. The headliner was a Flyweight tournament semifinal rematch from March 3rd, where the mistakenly tallied up the scores incorrectly, initially giving the bout to Johnson after three rounds. After the event the scores were recounted and the bout declared a draw prompting this rematch. Johnson and McCall returned to FX, with another three round affair that should have been five because of its main event status. Nonetheless, the two Flyweight competitors went the distance again with Johnson emerging as the victor taking the bout 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28 on the judges score cards. Johnson  controlled the fight early landing a takedown in the first minute of  the opening round setting the pace for the fight. Johnson landed a big punch sending McCall to the ground and worked in McCall’s guard. Reminiscent of the first bout, McCall too control in the second round with a flurry of strikes, a takedown, and a suplex after connecting with an accidental low blow. In the third round, Johnson was able to get a takedown and control the fight on the ground and stifle McCall’s stand up offense. Johnson will now square off against Joseph Benavidez in the inaugural Flyweight tournament to determine the first ever UFC Flyweight champion later this year.

Welterweights Erick Silva and Charlie Brenneman battled in a very exciting one round bout. High octane from the get go, Brenneman shot in for the takedown immediateley but was me by the fists and knees of Silva. Brenneman eventually got the takedown but was unable to keep Silva down for long. Brenneman was adamant about scoring another takedown pushing Silva against the cage forcing the referee to break it up numerous times. Silva connected with spin kick to the body dropping Brenneman to his knees and exposing his back. Silva jumped on the opportunity and secured a rear-naked choke for the win with four seconds remaining in the first round.

Three extremely impressive knockouts took place on this card as Mike Pyle knocked out Josh Neer with four seconds remaining in the first round. With lots of back and forth action from both fighters, Pyle only needed one punch to end it. Pyle controlled the majority of the bout and even played possum luring Neer in for the kill shot. With an exchange of knees and body shots Pyle connected with a huge right hand dropping Neer to the mat face first.

Eddie Wineland scored a second round knockout of Scott Jorgensen picking up his first UFC victory. Wineland was able to stuff the takedown attempts and turn this bout into a striking war. In the second round Jorgensen connected with a big knee as they broke apart from brawling busting Wineland’s face up something awful. Wineland ignored the blood pouring down his face and continued his assault. Wineland then threw two jabs that didn’t reach its mark, but the straight right that followed did dropping Jorgensen and ending the fight.

And finally Tim Means continued his 11-fight win streak with a 66-second TKO over Justin Salas. Means rushed forward dropping Salas with a big left hand followed by some ground and pound. Salas made it back to his feet where he was met with a right hand that dropped him. A combination of astonishingly bad reffing and toughness, Salas made it back to his feet to eat a series of three Muay Thai clinch knees to the face, dropping him once against which was followed by some ground and pound that ultimately ended the fight.

This wasn’t the only bout that either had bad referees or bad judges for that matter. In two baffling decisions Mike Pierce who dominated Carlos Eduardo Rocha for three rounds easily winning the bout 30-27 all around; won the bout via split decision with one judge giving all three rounds to Rocha. Seth Baczynski also stole a win over Lance Benoist, winning a split decision that was likely a unanimous decision for Benoist. (Full UFC on FX 3 event results below.)

Aggression FC 9 emanated from the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. This was the second event produced by the promotion since the merger earlier this year. Undefeated Stephen Beaumont captured the Aggression FC Lightweight title with a unanimous decision victory over  Evan Sanguin.

Fists were flying as four of the nine bouts on the card ended with first round knockouts. Zach Blaber took 10-seconds to knockout Andrew Buckland. Tito Jones took 21-seconds to knockout Deven Jones. Nick Dragich took exactly half a round to pick up his TKO victory over Michael Swimmer, and KB Bhullar landed a huge punch to drop Ben Snyder at 2:46 of their bout. Weekend in Fights June 2nd Edition

June 4, 2012 By Kevin

This Weekend in Fights! (June 2nd, 2012) crowned a new Ultimate Fighter champion, as well as a new Welterweight contender and a slew of new fighters to the UFC roster.  The weekend also featured action in Ireland with Cage Warriors 47, Ring of Fire 43 in Colorado, RMMAC in Russia, NAAFS 8 in Cleveland, XKO 15 in Texas, and Barre Beatdown in Vermont.

The UFC kicked off the weekend with a rare Friday night appearance, concluding the 15th season of The Ultimate Fighter. TUF Live Finale emanated from the Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was the first live season of TUF, where the fighters competed and lived in the house throughout the 13 weeks of the broadcast. Last week as both Mike Chiesa and Al Iaquinta fought to become finalists in an all Team Faber affair. In the storyline finish reminiscent of a Hollywood movie, Mike Chiesa who lost his father after winning his entry bout into the house wins the entire 32-man tournament with a submission finish over Iaquinta. Team Faber’s 5th pick overall Chiesa made short work of Team Faber’s #1 pick Iaquinta by toughing through the early onslaught of strikes from Iaquinta and closing the distance. Chiesa took the fight to the mat taking Iaquinta’s back in the processes. Chiesa secured a body triangle, locking in a deep rear-naked choke that choked Iaqunita out cold at the mid mark of the first round.

Mike Chiesa maybe be the winner of TUF 15, but the event was headlined with a Welterweight showdown between knockout artist Jake Ellenberger squaring of against the crafty Danish veteran Martin Kampmann. Ellenberger stormed in on Kampmann early in the first round, almost bringing the bout he end with a left hook that floored Kampmann. Ellenberger failed to finish the fight with his ground and pound, as Kampmann recovered pulling Ellenberger into a guillotine choke for the remainder of the round. In the second round Ellenberber bloodied up Kampmann’s nose, but stumbled with his footing which proved to be a huge mistake. Kampmann capitalized on this stumble and connected with a series of knees from the clinch dropping Ellenberger to the mat to end the bout before the two minute mark of the second round. Kampmann snaps Ellenberger’s 6-fight win streak and positions himself into the Welterweight title picture.

Charles Oliveira is now 2-0 at Featherweightwith second round submission victory over TUF 12 winner Jonathan Brookins. In very competitive first round Oliveira worked kicks, while Brookins connected with barrages of short punches. Brookings was able to score a takedown but it was short lived as Oliveira return to his feet to conect with superior strikes for the remainder of the round. In the second round Brookins connected during their exchanges bloodying up Oliveira’s nose and forehead. Oliveira quickly clinched and brought the action to the mat. From guard, Brookins worked a guillotine which Oliveira escaped and delivered a series of elbow strikes before slapping his own guillotine choke from the seated position. Oliveira wrenched the choke from the mount, transitioning to guard for the finish. This win marks Oliveira’s second win over an Ultimate Fighter winner.

Also impressive on the card was the “American Boy” Justin Lawrence’s UFC debut. Lawrence was the odds on favorite to win the entire tournament, but losing in the semifinals to eventual winner Mike Chiesa, Team Cruz’s #1 pick Lawrence took on Team Faber’s #6 pick John Cofer. Lawrence outclassed Cofer throughout the first two rounds, but the highlight reel finish came at 19-seconds of the third round, as Lawrence connected with a thip fake, jab, cross, roundhouse kick combo landing his foot flush on the cheek of Cofer, dropping him to the mat for the knockout finish. (Full The Ultimate Fighter Live Finale event results below – Full The Ultimate Fighter Live Season results here.)

Also on Friday night, former STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight Grand Prix Semifinalist Sergei Kharitonov headlined Russian MMA Championship (RMMAC) against John Delgado at the Yubileyny Sports Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Kharitonov made short work of Delgado with a 34-second Keylock submission. The event also held a one night Heavyweight tournament with Alexei Kudin coming out the victor. Fighting three times in one night, with two TKO’s and a unanimous decision, Kudin defeated Konstantin Gludov in the finals. (Full RMMAC event results below.)

Cage Warriors started the jam packed Saturday night of fights airing on MMAjunkie.com and Facebook from the The Helix in Dublin, Ireland. The event saw two championship bouts, as Heavweight champion Mike Hayes took on D.J. Linderman for the strap; and the vacant Featherweight title was on the line between England’s Dave Hill and Irishman Conor McGregor.

A rematch three years in the making D.J. Linderman repeated his by getting a unanimous decision victory over Mike Hayes. The difference in this bout, is that it was five rounds and for the Cage Warriors Heavyweight title. Linderman attempted to bring the bout to the ground many times throughout the first two rounds, but displayed superior standup, when Hayes was able to defend those attempts. After attempted many time Linderman was able to score the takedowns in the third round, staying more active than Hayes. Hayes showed some life, and in a sense of urgency landed his own takedown in the fifth, landed some knees to the body and attempted a rear-naked choke. Unfortunately it was too little too late, losing the decision and surrendering his championship in the process.

Irish beats English in the co-main event of the evening as Conor McGregor submitted Dave Hill with a second round rear-naked choke submission. McGregor defended a takedown attempt ending up in top position ignoring Hill’s submission attempts and delivering some ground and pound until the bout was brought back up to their feet. McGregor took this fight again slapping on the submission he would finish the fight with, but not in this round as Hill was saved by the bell. McGregor to the ground early in the second round took Hill’s back and ended it, capturing the vacant Cage Warriors Featherweight title. (Full Cage Warriors 47 event results below.)

MMA Journeyman Phil Baroni headlined Ring of Fire 43 at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado on Saturday. A 28-fight veteran, Baroni has fought in every recognizable  promotion including the UFC, Pride, Elite XC, STRIKEFORCE, and ICON Sport among others. The fight had all the makings of an exciting finish, as Baroni’s opponent Chris Holland (4-3) has never gone the distance in his seven bouts, winning all of his bouts via KO/TKO. Of Holland’s three losses, one was by submission and two by knockout, one of which came at the hands of Instinct MMA star Brandon Thatch.  This bout was no different from Holland’s other bouts as the finish came via TKO in the second round. Holland picked up is his fifth victory, delivering Baroni his 15th loss.  (Full ROF 43 event results below.)

North American Allied Fight Series (NAAFS) took place at the Nautica Pavilion in Cleveland, Ohio and was available on iPPV on GoFightLive.com. The card featured two Bellator fighters and Cleveland natives in Frank Caraballo and Chris Lozano. Frank Caraballo defended his NAAFS Featherweight championship title versus Antonio Castillo Jr. with a quick first round rear-naked choke submission, bring an end to the Puerto Rico/Mexico trash talk between the two. Bellator Season 6 Welterweight tournament quarter-finalist Chris Lozano was originally slated to take on Kyle Baker for the NAAFS Welterweight title, but due to injury, Lozano was pitted against Wisconsin native James Warfield (22-10). Lozano pikced up the victory by  putting the beat down on Warfield so bad that he was unable to continue into the second round. (Full NAAFS: Fight Night in the Flats 8 event results below.)

Former UFC Middleweight Jake Rosholt (12-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) headlined Xtreme Knockout 15 (XKO 15) on Saturday at the The Gym in Arlington, Texas. UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and UFC Welterweight Johny Hendricks were special guests for the event. Now fighting at Light Heavyweight, Rosholt took on Matthew Thompson (16-9). Thompson made short work of Rosholt with a first round kneebar submission, snapping Rosholt’s five fight win streak. (Xtreme Knockout 15 event results below.)

Vermont based Xtreme Combat Promotions presented Barre Beatdown at the Barre Municipal Auditorium in Barre, Vermont on Saturday night. A combination of both amateur and professional cage bouts took place in front of a packed house. Ringside Report Radio’s Kevin McKough manned the ring announcing duties for event. Lots of quick finishes and guillotine chokes throughout the night as three of nine bouts ended in that fashion. The main event was a Middleweight bout between Mike Derby and Tim De Iturriaga. The bout was a wrestling war as Berby took De Iturriaga to the ground and worked to improve position. Berby eventually took De Iturriaga’s back sinking in a rear-naked choke for the victory. To purchase a DVD copy of the event call Eastman Entertainment at 802-489-1970.  (Full Barre Beatdown event results below.)
