After a mini hiatus Weekend in Fights! is back! This Weekend in Fights!(December 8th, 2012) featured Bellator 83 in Atlantic City, XFC 21: Night of Champions in Nashville on Friday night. Saturday night featured UFC on FOX 5 in Seattle, and Cage Warriors 50 in Glasgow.

Bellator 83 kicked off the weekend at the Caesars Atlantic City in New Jersey on Friday. The Rad Martinez versus Shahbulat Shamhalaev for the Bellator Season 7 Featherweight tournament final, however Shamhalaev became very sick  due to food poisoning and the bout was postponed to Bellator 84 on Dec. 14.

Anthony Leone played spoiler to  Zach Makovsky’s return since losing the Bellator Bantamweight title. Formally undefeated in Bellator, Makovsky drops two straight as Leone picks up a split decision.

The performance of the night went to Jessica Eye, who made extremely short work of Bellator Straweight champion Zoila Gurgel in a Flyweight bout. Eye dropped Gurgel, then slapped on standing arm triangle choke, rendering Grugel unconscious in under a minute. (Full Bellator 83 event results below.)

Also on Friday night XFC 21: Night of Champions emanated from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. In the main event undefeated congenital amputee with just one fully-formed arm Nick Newell submitted  Eric Reynolds with a rear-naked choke to claim the XFC Lightweight title. This win makes him the first handicap MMA fighter to win gold, and he remains a perfect 9-0, snapping Reynolds’ three fight win streak. (Full XFC 21: Night of Champions event results below.)

The UFC’s fifth installment on FOX 5 took place at the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington. The UFC Lightweight title was on the line in the main event, as champion Benson Henderson went five rounds with challenger Nate Diaz. Henderson dominated Diaz over the five round winning 50-45, 50-45, and 50-43 on one judge’s score card, giving “Bendo” two 10-8 rounds. Henderson was able to clinch and takedown Diaz with ease, ground and punding his way to victory. Diaz pulled off a few submission attempts, but they unsuccessful. Henderson’s gameplan was perfect by shutting down Diaz’ stealer boxing offense., in fact it was one of Diaz’ worst “striking” performances to date. With the victory Henderson remains a perfect 6-0 in the UFC and successfully defended his championship for the second time.

The co-main event featured the legendary Mauricio “Shogun” Rua squaring off against the Swedish standup specialist Alexander Gustafsson. This exciting three round war saw Gustafsson capture his biggest career win with a unanimous decision. In what was a very back and forth affair, Gustafsson’s lankiness and powerful knees are what helped him pick up the win. Escaping from leglock submission attempts and delivering devastating knees, Gustafsson rendered Rua a bloody mess. Rua continued to battle on and prove his toughness and high threshold for pain by not being finish, but was visibly hurt and fatigued in the final frame. With the victory Gustafsson picks up his sixth victory in a row and a “guaranteed” title shot for the winner of UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones versus Chael Sonnen, which takes place on April 27th, 2012 at UFC 158 in Newark, New Jersey.

In another “changing of the guard” bout, 23-year-old Welterweight Rory MacDonald picked his biggest victory to date with a three round beat down of B.J. Penn. In a semi stalemate first round Penn attempted takedowns on the much larger MacDonald. In the second round Rory Mac had Penn in visible danger with combinations to the body and the head. Hesitant to get counter struck, MacDonald didn’t move in for the kill, but displayed an abundance of cockiness by shuffling his feet Muhammad Ali style. The third round was filled with clinching, and a very demoralized Penn. MacDonald picked up two 30-26′s and a 30-27 in three rounds. Post fight MacDonald called out Carlos Condit, wanting a rematch for his only career blemish.

Opening up the card on FOX, was a Welterweight battle between two strikers, and Mike Swick took on Matt Brown. The first round was a feeling out process for the two fighters. In the second the grinding Brown caught Swick with a devastating right to score the knockout, but connected with a left for assure his forth straight victory.

Also on the card, 15-year veteran Yves Edwards handed Jeremy Stephens his knockout first ever career loss. Raphael Assuncao stopped Mike Easton’s eight fight win streak with a unanimous decision, and Daron Cruickshank head kick knocked out Henry Martinez. (Full UFC on FOX 5: Henderson vs. Diaz event results below.)

This Weekend in Fights! (August 4th, 2012) featured The UFC’s return to FOX television with UFC on FOX 4, Xtreme Fighting Championship 19 in Charlotte, CES MMA 12 in Rhode Island, and Flawless Fighting Championship in Chicago.

Xtreme Fighting Championships or XFC kicked off the weekend on Friday with XFC 19: Charlotte Showdown at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. With multiple changes to the main event with fighters dropping out, Nicolae Cury faced Roger Carroll on one days notice. Cury edged out Carroll in very close decision that appeared to lean towards the hometown favorite Carroll. However the judges saw the bout for Cury, who stopped Carroll from winning like his brother Joey earlier on the card.

Felice Herrig continued her 2012 undefeated streak with a unanimous decision over Simona Soukupova in the co-main event of the evening. With a lot of clinching in the first round, Herrig displayed her striking skills in the second and third frame to earn the judges nod.

Congenital amputee with just one fully-formed arm, Nick Newell continues to remain undefeated with yet another dominating performance against David Mays. Newell knocked out Mays with a series of knees two minutes into their bout. At 8-0 Newell may face XFC Lightweight champion Eric Reynolds. (Full XFC 19: Charlotte Showdown event results below.)

Classic Entertainment & Sports or CES MMA held their 12th event titled Far Beyond Driven at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island on Friday. In the main event, UFC vet John Howard defeated Scott Rehm in under 90-seconds after Rehm injured his arm. WCF and WEC vet Mike Campbell picked up a unanimous decision victory over STRIKEFORCE and Bellator veteran Don Carlo-Clauss in the co-main event. (Full CES MMA – Far Beyon Driven event results below.)

UFC on FOX 4 emanated from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on Saturday night. The double main event of the card featured two potential Light Heavyweight title eliminator bouts, with former champions Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Lyoto Machida in action. Rua faced Brandon Vera, while Machida faced Ryan Bader, in a “Who ever wins most impressively gets a title shot.”  stipulation to their bouts. With the pressure on, both Rua and Machida refused to go to the judges decision by finishing their bouts. Rua had a back-and-forth battle with Vera, where he uncharacteristically utilized wrestling to score points throughout the fight. Both fighters took some vicious strikes, but in the end Rua would drop Vera and rain punches down forcing the referee to call the action in the last minute of the fourth round. Lyoto Machida had a easier night than Rua when he knocked out Ryan Bader 92-seconds into the second round. Machida used his classic counter striking style to catch Bader rushing in. As Bader stepped forward he ran into Machida’s fist knocking him out cold. With the more impressive victory of the two bouts, Lyoto Machida, who hinted at a potential drop to the Middleweight division, has been granted a title shot to the winner of champion Jon Jones versus Dan Henderson which takes place on September 1st at UFC 151.

In one of the fights of the night Joe Lauzon defeated last minute replacement fighter Jamie Varner. Lauzon spoiled Varner’s second UFC bout with a beautiful triangle choke submission. The action was very back-and-forth between the two fighters, but Lauzon who was tagged multiple times was able to submit a visibly exhausted Varner for the win.

Mike Swick returned to the UFC after 29-month layoff to face fellow Welterweight DaMarques Johnson. Swick ended the bout with a second round  knockout making his return a successful one. (Full UFC on FOX 4 event results below.)

Flawless Fighting Championship held their first event in Chicago, Illinois. In the main event Egidijus Valavicius made short work of  Eric Hammerich with an arm bar 58-seconds into the bout. The card featured UFC veteran Jake O’Brien who defeated  Miodrag Perkovic in a three rounder. The card was suppose to feature Bellator, WEC, and Dream  veteran Chase Beebe, and TUF Alumni, UFC, STRIKEFORCE, Bellator and M-1 veteran Shamar Bailey, but their bouts never took place. (Full FFC 1 event results below.)

Weekend in Fights! April 14th Edition

Send to Kindle

This Weekend in Fights! (April 14th, 2012) saw the return of the UFC for the first time in 43 days, with UFC on FUEL TV 2 in Stockholm, Sweden, a new Bellator Bantamweight champion was crowned in Atlantic City, as well as action from Cage Warriors in Jordan, EFC Africa in South Africa,  XFC in Tennessee, and Aggression Fighting Championship and AM Ford Fight Night 2012 in British Columbia.

Cage Warriors kicked off this weekend in fights on Thursday with Cage Warriors Fight Night 5: Brents vs. Linderman.  CWFN 5 took place at the New Boxing Arena in Amman, Jordan and was broadcast on MMAJunkie.com. In the main event of the card, D.J. Linderman, who lost two weeks ago at Instinct MMA 3, edged out Bobby Brents with a unanimous decision on two weeks notice. Even though he was giving up almost 25 pounds, Linderman bloodied the much larger Brents’ nose in the first round, but the action slowed down in the second. In the final frame, Linderman picked apart Brents with striking combinations to get the nod.

The Cage Warriors Middleweight tournament semifinals took place, with Pavel Kusch and Victor Cheng advancing to the finals for the vacant Cage Warriors Middleweight title. Kusch made short work of John Phillips with a 25 second heel hook submission, the submission specialist has 13 wins with 13 submissions. On the other side Victor Cheng went the distance against Faycal Hucin to  pick up the unanimous decision.  (Full Cage Warriors Fight Night 5: Linderman vs. Brents event results below.)

The action continued on Friday night with Bellator 65 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Emenating from Boardwalk Hall and broadcasting on MTV 2 and Spike.com, Bellator crowned a new Bantamweight champion in the main event. The main event featured the first title defense of Bellator Bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky, as he took on the winner of Bellator Season 5 Bantamweight tournament, Eduardo Dantas. Both fighters came out full throttle, in a bout that didn’t make it past the second round. Dantas completely dominated Makovsky, with an extremely impressive performance both off his back and in mount. Dantas was able to counter Makovsky’s take down attempt, and gain top position. From the mount, Dantas rained down on Makovsky, with a series of blows, followed up with an arm triangle choke. Despite his best efforts to grip his own leg and avoid the submission, Dantas was able to apply enough pressure to force Makovsky unconscious, and claim the title.

In the Featherweight tournament semifinal match up, Daniel Straus handed Mike Corey his first ever loss in Bellator. In the three round affair, Straus displayed his improved stand up, putting the beat down and bloodied up Corey in the first. However, Corey was able to regain his composure in the second, as he scored a take down and controlled most of the round. Straus continued to tee-off on Corey in the third, with punch and knee combinations. Both fighters ended the bout, swinging violently at each other, perhaps in desperation, or an attempt to woo the judges; ultimately, Straus was awarded the bout.

Bellator kicked off the Season 6 Bantamweight tournament with Luis Nogueira and Marcos Galvao both picking up unanimous decision victories to advance to the semifinals. Nogueira counter struck his opponent, Alexis Vila, staying away from his powerful right hand in order to pick the win. Glavao impose his will as he secured take downs, attempted submissions and connected with devastating power punches to pick up the win of Ed West. (Full Bellator 65 event results below.)

XFC 17: Apocalypse took place at the Oman Arena in Jackson, Tennessee and was broadcast on HDNet on Friday. In his second appearance for the promotion, American Top Team’s Eric Reynolds continued winning streak and snapped Luciano Dos Santos three fight win streak, in a three round stand up war, that saw Reynolds come out the victor in the main event.

Marlon Moraes had an early night when he came out swinging with devastating left hands, knocking out Jarrod Card in just 48 seconds. The one armed man, Nick Newell continued his miraculous undefeated streak, with a majority decision over Chris Coggins. IN a 12 bout card, seven bouts ended with slick submissions, three by TKO and two decisions. The UFC kicked off Saturday’s fights in the afternoon, with UFC on FUEL TV 2, at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. Hometown hero, Alexander Gustafsson headlined the event against heavy handed Brazilian striker Thiago Silva. Due to the Swedish Athletic Commission rules, the bout was on three rounds, as opposed to the new UFC standard five round main events. After dropping Silva in the first round with an uppercut, Gustafsson landed some ground and pound, but was unable to finish Silva. However, the knockdown set the pace for the remainder of the bout, as Gustafsson was able to control Silva. Silva managed to land some heavy strikes, but none effective enough to give him control. Gustafsson’s conditioning proved to be better than Silva, as he continued to connect with punches and kicks. Silva attempted to finish the bout in the third round, chasing Gustafsson with some power punches to no avail. Gustafsson picked up the unanimous decision victory.

In the co-main event of the evening Brian Stann made short work of Alessio Sakara with a combination of knees punches to the head,  dropping Sakara to the mat. Stann began his ground and pound assault, only to be pulled into Sakara’s guard. Breaking free, Stann connected with three solid elbows rendering Sakara unconscious.

Dennis Siver made a successful debut at Featherweight with a unanimous decision victory over Deigo Nunes. In a very stand up heavy match up, both fighters connected with  numerous flurries of punches and knees threw the bout in the clinch. Even with his good take down defense, cutting Siver open, and dropping him to a knee, Nunes failed to win the bout in the eyes of the judges in a very close bout.

In a huge upset of the night Afghani born, product of Golden Glory, Siyar Bahadurzada knocked out Paulo Thiago in his UFC debut in just 42 seconds. Winning the “Knockout of the Night” honors, Bahadurzada landed a  big right hand that cause Thiago to hit mat face first.

The “Fight of the Night” went to Bantamweights, Brad Pickett and Damacio Page in an instant classic. Both fighters went at each other from the opening bell with Pickett ultimately getting the submission victory in the second round. The first round was highly contested back and fourth action with both connecting with heavy strikes. The fast pace action continued into the second round. With Page dazed from all on shots, Pickett took advantage,  sinking his hooks in and applying the rear-naked choke, forcing page to tap.

In a Welterweight match up, John “The One” Maguire squared off against DaMarques Johnson. Sporting the pink and black, cause Bret Hart is his hero, MaGuire was losing the stand up war, as he ate a lot a clearly painful leg kicks from Johnson. Taking it to the mat, Maguire worked his Jiu-Jitsu game and attempted an omoplata, armbar, guillotine choke and rear-naked choke, all unsuccessfully.  In the second round, Maguire took Johnson down with ease, but was on the receiving end of some elbows. Unable to get off his back, Johnson grabbed Maguire’s arm for a kimura, but Maguire snatched Johnson’s arm and wrenched a beautiful arm bar, forcing Johnson to tap in the “Submission of the Night.”

Tristar Gym’s Francis Carmont averted disaster, after being man handled in the first round by Magnus Cedenblad. With his hooks in, Cedenblad had Carmont’s back worked for the rear-naked choke in the first round. Early in the second round, after landing a take down, Carmont rained down on Cedenblad with relentless ground and pound punches and elbows from mount position forcing Cedenblad giving up his back. Carmont would take advantage and sink in a rear-naked choke to score the victory in under two minutes.(Full UFC on FUEL TV 2 event results below.)
