Undefeated heavyweights collide for the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Heavyweight Title, Georges St-Pierre defends his title in the front of the biggest audience in UFC history, Anderson Silva continues to dominate the middleweight division, and much more in UFC: Best of 2011.
Divided into the weight classes is how the UFC looks back at 2011. Starting with the heavyweight division and the lone heavyweight championship bout of the year when Cain Velasquez defended against Junior dos Santos. Along with the Wanderlei Silva against Chris Leben fight, it’s the entire fight, the rest on disc 1 are just highlights. Unlike past Best of releases, the timeline is not in chronological order, even in the weight classes, but the narration keeps you on a steady path through a particular fighter or event that the order is not really important.
Blu-ray edition offers 10 more complete fights on the second disc compared to the DVD version. Brock Lesnar VS. Alistair Overeem is very short to be twice on the two discs, however the Nate Diaz against Donald Cerrone bout was one that went the distance and was a great striker battle. Shogun Rua against Dan Henderson, easily the most talked about fight of 2011 and according to Joe Rogan, one of the greatest fights of all-time is definitely worth a watch as that goes all five rounds.
Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard’s battles at the start and end of 2011, Wanderlei Silva’s impressive comeback win against Cung Le that left Le with a destroyed nose, Jose Aldo’s dominate performance in the featherweight division, and the war between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber, all the major feuds in the UFC are featured along with who to watch out for in each weight category.
For diehard fight fans this is just a quick recap that is not really necessary. For fans that occasionally or just recently started watch the UFC, this is a great buy. By the time you’re done watching it, you’ll know all the major fighters, who is coming to challenge who and who recently left the sport for good, like Randy Couture and Lesnar.
