This Weekend in Fights! (February 2nd, 2013) WIF FEB 2featured Bellator 87, the annual Superbowl weekend card with UFC 156, Legacy Fighting Championship 17,  and ONE FC 7.

Bellator 87 kicked of the weekend with the opening round of the season 8 Lightweight tournament at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Eight men entered, four advanced. David Rickels outlasted and scored a gassed out Lloyd Woodard. Quebec’s Guillaume De Lorenzi was knocked in 31-seconds by last minute replacement Saad Awad after Patricky Freire pulled out of the tournament. Will Brooks out wrestled Ricardo Tirloni to advance with a unanimous decision, and Thiago Michel was submitted by Alexander Sarnavskiy with a rear-naked choke in the second round. (Full Bellator 87 event results below.)

On Friday night Legacy FC held their 17th event at  Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio, Texas. The main event featured Bellator and Sengoku veteran Dan Hornbuckle versus UFC, TKO, veteran Pete Spratt. Hornbuckle would snap his two-fight losing skid with a unanimous decision over Spratt, who sees his two-fight win streak come to an end. Younger brother of Middleweight UFC veteran Jake Rosholt, Heavyweight Jared Rosholt bounced back from a knockout loss in his last fight. The 2010 NCAA Division I runner up picked up a unanimous decision over Richard Odoms. (Full Legacy FC 17 event results below.)

The weekend’s main attraction was UFC 156 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Every Superbowl weekend the UFC holds one of their biggest cards of the year, and they did not disappoint. In a “Superfight” UFC Featherweight champion squared off against former UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar for the title. Champion Jose Aldo would walk away with a unanimous decision to retain his title in a five round war that should have crowned Edgar as champion. Unable to finish Aldo, Edgar was once again handed a loss due to the judges.

In the co-main event Antonio Rogerio Nogueira picked a huge win over Rashad Evans. Lil Nog scored a unanimous decision victory against a fighter who has “lost his smile” since losing to Jon Jones. Damien Maia continues to impress at Welterweight with his fourth straight victory and his biggest one in the division to date. Maia defeated longtime Welterweight kingpin Jon Fitch by unanimous decision.

In the biggest shocker of the night the returning Alistair Overeem was knocked out in the third round by Antonio Silva. No one gave Silva a chance going into this bout, and he had clearly lost rounds  one and two. Overeem appeared to be on his way to a unanimous decision victory, when Silva rushed at him in the opening one minute with a relentless combination of strikes. Against the cage Overeem had nowhere to run, and was dropped and finished at the 25-second mark. (Full UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar event results below.)

Also on Saturday, ONE FC 7 took place at the Putra Indoor Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The main event featured the crowning of the inaugural ONE FC Featherweight  title; the bout was a reschedule one that should have taking place at ONE FC 6, but was cut due to  time constraints. Honorio Banario captured the title with a fourth round TKO due to an eye injury against Eric Kelly.

ONE FC kicked off the Malaysia National Featherweight championship tournament with two bouts in the opening round. Jian Kai Chee picked up a unanimous decision over A.J. Lias Mansor to advance, while Melvin Yoeh submitted Raymond Tiew in the second round with a triangle choke to advance. In the Bantamweight Grand Prix quarterfinal on the card Thanh Vu made quick work of last minute replacement Mohd Yeoh with a barrage of knees and punches to end the bout 63-seconds in. Vu now joins semifinalist’s Jens Pulver, Masakatsu Ueda, and Kevin Belingon. (Full ONE FC 7: Return of Warriors event results below.)

Weekend in Fights! June 30th Edition

Send to Kindle

This Weekend in Fights! (June 30th) featured the Montreal debut of Instinct MMA, Resurrection Fighting Alliance in Nebraska, Championship Fighting Alliance in Florida, and Madness Fighting Competition in Aruba.

Instinct MMA held it’s fourth event and their first in Montreal at Centre Pierre-Charbonneau. The event had many exciting bouts, delivering a great show for local fans. The main event was headlined with a Welterweight showdown between two knockouts artists in Grudge Training Center’s Brandon Thatch and Quebec standout Martin Grandmont. With the combination of skill sets it was apparent from the opening bell that this bout would not go to the judges score cards. However, the result was not what many may have been predicted as Thatch submitted Grandmont with a rear-naked choke. After  a few exchanges of high kicks, Thatch brought the bout to the mat where he delivered a few strikes forcing Grandmont to give up his back. With the opening Thatch took advantage sinking in his hooks and the choke to end the bout in under two minutes.

Quebec fan favorite Thierry Quenneville returned to MMA after semi-retirement to take on UFC and STRIKEFORCE  veteran Luke Caudillo in Lightweight action. Quenneville pushed the pace and kept his distance throughout all three rounds picking his spots with combos and backing away. Quenneville stayed calm and even did a little trash talking but fought a very safe fight to win all three rounds on the judges score cards in a very successful return.

Former Dallas Maverick, ECW & OVW pro wrestler turned kickboxer turned MMA fighter Radu Spinghel and France native kickboxer and Tristar trainee Oulmoudéné Najebe squared off in a Heavyweight bout. Najebe made short work of the seven footer by shoving him to the mat for a 43-second TKO.  Najebe  pounced on Spinghel and  pounded him out, forcing the referee to step in when Spinghel wasn’t defending himself.

The fight of the night was a Middleweight bout between Strahinja Gavrilovic and Derek Parker. Parker was won both rounds one and two, by connecting with repeated legs kicks to Gavrilovic’s lead leg to the point that a huge visible welt was forming and Gavrilovic was hurt with each kick. Parker was very cocky and threw very powerful strikes, but ate some in the process and was caught late in the third round. Gavrilovic landed a huge right hand dropping Parker to the mat, where he followed up with some ground and pound that was halted by the referee. (Intinct MMA 4 Quick Results below – Round-by-Round Coverage Hear.)

Resurrection Fighting Alliance of RFA held their third event at the Viaero Event Center, in Kearney, Nebraska. TUF 2 Winner Joe Stevenson and Gay Porn star Dakota Cochrane headlined the event.  A 16-time UFC veteran Joe “Daddy” Stevenson joined the UFC after winning Season 2 of the Ultimate Fighter in 2005 by defeating Luke Cummo. With a total of 16-bouts over six years, Stevenson was release after dropping after losing four straight fights. His opponent Dakota Cochrane a veteran of 16 porn films attempted to make Season 15 of the Ultimate Fighter but lost a split decision to James Vick. A Nebraskan native, Cochrane most notable defeated Jamie Varner for Titan Fighting Championship, but went 0-2 in RFA since. Nonetheless the two took to the cage.  Cochrane snapped his two fight losing skid and improved his RFA record to 1-2 when finished off  Stevenson in a very familiar position; behind him. Cochrane submitted Stevenson with a rear-naked choke 64-seconds into the second round adding a fifth loss in a row for Stevenson. (Full RFA 3 – Stevenson vs. Cochrane event results below.)

Taking place at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Florida Championship Fighting Alliance held the seventh event that featured DREAM & STRIKEFORCE veteran Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante taking on Bellator veteran and CFA mainstay Luis Palomino in the main event. Palomino increased his win streak to four in a row, with a third round knockout. (Full CFA 7 – Never Give Up event results below.)

Aruba based Madness Fighting Competition featured some very familiar names to the Quebec MMA scene with Evan Nedd and Johan Croes. Nedd was featured on the first two Instinct MMA events, and Croes is an Instinct MMA, XMMA, TKO and the Stephane Patry run Titans Fighting standup only promotion. MFC’s inaugural event took place at the Joe Laveist Sport Park in San Nicolas, Aruba on Saturday night with a combination of pro and amateur bouts. Both Evan Nedd and Johan Croes lost their bouts in devastating fashion. Nedd got dropped with a big right hand from him opponent Adrick Croes. After taking the hit Nedd attempted a takedown, but Croes sprawled and they were back to their feet. Croes then threw a front kick that knocked Nedd out cold. Johan Croes took on Hyram Rodriguez who submitted him in the second round with a beautiful armbar submission. (Full Madness Fighting Competition 1 event results below.)
