WWE: The Top 25 Rivalries in Wrestling History DVD review

Send to Kindle

rivalriesBloodshed and a high volume of violence is the norm when watching WWE’s latest DVD release, The Top 25 Rivalries in Wrestling History DVD exploring the vast history of classic wrestling feuds.

WWE, NWA, WCW, ECW, AWA, WCCW, rivalries from every federation is covered. Should have some made the list? Of course. Like the majority of WWE DVD releases of this nature, no ranking system or explanation for how this list came together. For all complaints about feuds not included in this 3-disc DVD set, send to http://www.wwe.com/help/contact-us/show-feedback

The DVD is hosted by new announcer Renee Young, who is playing a chemistry expert gimmick to go with the theme of how two opponents can make magic in and out of the ring. Albeit if this was a PG-rated DVD Young’s character would be appropriate, she even refers to the audience as kids. However, this a TV-14 production, there are graphic photos and highlights of some brutal confrontations. Mick Foley VS. Triple H was barbaric at times and not suitable for any children to watch. Bruiser Brody VS. Abdullah The Butcher only works in a mature setting unless you’re trying to give youths nightmares.

Now if you’re over the age of 14, a fan of the Attitude era, and enjoy uncensored raw footage, you’re going to find a lot of enjoyment in the over 7 hours presentation.

Not only is there violence, but an incredible history lesson throughout the eras in wrestling. Austin VS. McMahon, Hulk Hogan VS. Andre The Giant, Tommy Dreamer VS. Raven, some of the biggest drawing wars that took place in the ring are revisited. 13 matches are accompanied in this set, with great highflying action from Sabu against the Suplex Machine Tazz, to the battle of national wrestling champions with Kurt Angle against Brock Lesnar.

As long as you can look past the questionable list and take time to enjoy the entertainment provided you will see this release is well worth the purchase. The match selection is decently varied with some rare matches along with a few that hardcore DVD collectors have already. For the rich history it’s definitely worth watching once.

WWE: For All Mankind: The Life and Career of Mick Foley DVD review

Send to Kindle

foleyA 16-foot fall off a cell was only the start of extraordinaire pain for Mick Foley, he suffered a concussion, lost teeth, thumbtacks covering his body, in the end him and The Undertaker created one of the most barbaric matches in WWE history.

That defining moment is discussed in detail in WWE’s latest home video release, For All Mankind: The Life and Career of Mick Foley. From his peers to his bosses and a bonus commentary track Foley recorded with former Extreme Championship Wrestling voice Joey Styles, fans get a different take on the near 15-year match that is still considered one of the most memorable matches of all-time.

The two-hour plus documentary on disc one takes you through a decent portion of Foley’s wrestling career, his early beginnings, WCW, ECW, WWE, and his eventual retirement. Not every angle, moment, match or standout performance is covered because there are just far too many for a three-disc set. However, Foley did have an amazing career and what is covered is still intriguing and different as WWE for the first time ever had Foley’s friend Shane Douglas comment on Foley making it in the business and talking to his kids that are starting to grow up.

Match selection for this set is also unlike most releases as it features bouts that mostly have never been released on home video by WWE. There is his first WWE match against The British Bulldogs but this time provided with alternate commentary. Only shame is that there is only three bonus commentary tracks, but definitely must listen material. Styles and Foley making fun of Douglas and trying to talk about Foley struggle through his match with Undertaker is quality viewing.

WWE: CM Punk Best in the World DVD review

Send to Kindle

CM Punk dropped a pipebomb of a promo that completely changed the landscape of the WWE and his own status as he went from on his way out with the company to WWE Champion.

Now for the first time WWE home video has released a 3-disc DVD set that includes a two-hour documentary on Punk’s wrestling career. Punk’s career is covered from his time wrestling in a makeshift ring, surprisingly IWA MidSouth and Ring of Honor, OVW, WWE’s version of ECW and finally on RAW and Smackdown.

Punk speaks on growing up as a punk kid, distant from his blood family, his friendship and matches with Colt Cabana and Chris Hero, and one of his greatest feuds in ROH with Samoa Joe. The format of the documentary follows the same as the Randy Orton: Evolution of a Predator DVD where a camera crew is following Punk around with flashbacks to his past.

Never before has WWE explored the depths of a beginning like they have with Punk. Footage of Punk’s IWA and ROH matches are shown and the moment Punk signed his first WWE contract in ROH is also shown. Also, while there is a lot of positive reaction to Punk by Paul Heyman, Lita, his close friends, there is also negative feedback on Punk as well. Michael Hayes openly talks about how Heyman overhypes guys he likes and stands by his decision not to give Punk the ECW Championship at ECW: December to Dismember. Current WWE Superstars Kofi Kingston, Curt Hawkins and others talk about their awkward first impression of Punk.

Despite the doubts on Punk, no one ever denies his determination and his belief in himself in being the best in the world. After two short World Heavyweight Championship reigns and getting pushed down the main event ladder by The Miz, Punk decided he had enough and was planning to leave WWE. A night of airing his grievances changed his outlook and direction completely.

Disc 2 and 3 contains a showcase of Punk starting in OVW, then in ECW, then as a mid-carder until finally in the main event championship matches, all hand-picked by Punk himself. For the first time WWE gives you exclusive content of matches as you get to see all the action of matches that go to commercial break.

Whether you like Punk or not, the story, the matches, and the special features all worth having. It’s rare WWE releases a DVD like this and they may never release anything like this again.

WWE: Superstar Collection Kofi Kingston DVD review

Send to Kindle

The hi-flying excitement that Kofi Kingston brings to the ring makes him one of the most energetic and must-see talent in all of WWE, great career moments shown in Superstar Collection Kofi Kingston DVD.

The match that put Kingston in the spotlight and noticed by the WWE Universe in a big way was his match with Chris Jericho at Night of Champions 2008. Jericho had just started his feud with Shawn Michaels and was set to battle a mystery opponent, who happen to be Kingston with the IC Championship on the line. Jericho looked like he was going to score the victory until HBK made a distraction that allowed Kingston to nail his Trouble in Paradise finisher and score the biggest win of his WWE career. It was Kingston’s first championship win, but not his last.

Kingston winning the tag team titles with CM Punk against Legacy on RAW is the next match featured. A close back and forth encounter that Kingston used his aerial abilities to take care of Legacy’s back-up in order for Punk to score the win. The entire WrestleMania 25 Money In The Bank Ladder match is shown next. Kingston being innovative with walking with two ladders was one of many moments he had in the match.

Kingston’s attempt to get into the main event is the next match as he battled Randy Orton at TLC 2009. While Kingston showed a fighting spirit in the match, he was clearly out matched as Orton did not even need Legacy in order to defeat Kingston. Kingston winning the IC Championship again this time against Dolph Ziggler on Smackdown is the last match on the DVD.

Although the description on the back of the DVD states there are three ladder matches there is only one on the DVD. Regardless, considering this is the only DVD WWE has released on Kingston, it is the only opportunity for fans to watch some of the moments that helped build Kingston into a Superstar.

WWE: Falls Count Anywhere: The Greatest Street Fights And Other Out Of Control Matches DVD review

Send to Kindle

Screams of agony from the torture WWE Superstars put their bodies through resulted in injuries, bloody wars, and some of the most exciting matches in WWE history, all revisited in Falls Count Anywhere: The Greatest Street Fights and Other Out of Control Matches DVD.

This new 3-disc set shows decades worth of the most hardcore and bizarre encounters in WWE, WCW, NWA, and ECW. The majority of the matches did take place in WWE, but a lot of the matches are making their first appearance on WWE home video DVD. Hosted by WWE Hardcore Legend Mick Foley, who gives his thoughts on the acceptance of hardcore wrestling to WWE and his frustrations with WWE’s new corporate policy that forces him to adjust his attire for the DVD. Foley is entertaining, but his segments are short and few.

From the early 80′s, ending all the way to last year, this release gives fans a better understanding on how no holds barred matches evolved over the years. From Pat Patterson using every way to beat the life out of Sgt. Slaughter in the ring, to Big Show and Kane demonstrating how they can completely destroy their bodies on the outside of the ring. WWE constantly pushes the boundaries of their entertainment level adding new elements to it, such as the 24/7 Hardcore Championship that was defended by the likes of Al Snow, Hardcore Holly and the late Crash Holly.

Randy Savage tying up Crush at WrestleMania X, Steve Austin beating up Bret Hart in an ambulance, Tazz and Bam Bam Bigelow crashing right through the entrance ramp, Shane McMahon performing his elbow drop from the top rope through an announcer’s table for the first time, all classic moments in WWE all found in this set. This trip back allows fans to witness the different eras in wrestling, when HHH and Stephanie were in charge of RAW, when Evolution ruled RAW, and when DX came back to defeat two young rising stars in Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase.

For hardcore fans there maybe a few matches they feel are missing to this set, but that does not take away from the high quality of violence and mayhem you will witness on these DVDs. You’ll see some of your favourites, some legendary names and some current stars that had a few grudges matches that made this collection.

WWE: ECW Unreleased Volume 1 DVD review

Send to Kindle

The land of barbed wire, crimson masks, death-defying aerial assaults, and violent wrestling is revisited with special host Joey Styles in WWE’s newest three-disc DVD set, ECW: Unreleased Volume 1.

Styles was the voice of Extreme Championship Wrestling and with his vast knowledge of every wrestler that competed during the entire ECW run, there is no one better to give analysis and discuss the matches. Styles helps give fans the importance of Raven VS. Tommy Dreamer, how Shane Douglas was the top star, the mixed martial arts background of Taz and more.

Quite a few ECW stars are featured, Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, Bam Bam Bigelow, Justin Credible, Lance Storm, however some are highlighted more than others. Rob Van Dam and Sabu have quite a few matches, mostly in tag matches. Every match they have is filled with ladders, chairs, and both men destroying their bodies in creative ways.

These matches all play an important part in the evolution of ECW as a promotion. From Dreamer getting accepted by the fans for giving a woman a spiked piledriver to Rhyno doing the same years later in a more violent manner, you really understand the changes ECW went as they tried to compete with WWE and World Championship Wrestlng. Styles talks in-depth on the Taz and Mike Awesome incident that created one of the most unique moments in pro wrestling history.

Unless you collected nearly every ECW VHS tape before they went bankrupted, you probably have not seen a lot of the matches. These matches are rare, uncensored and will probably never be showcased on DVD again. It’s amazing that WWE has already released a few DVD sets on ECW and still have enough to give fans their money’s worth.

Fans of extreme wrestling will not be disappointed with the bloody and chaotic action on this set. Don’t expect any of the revived ECW that was in WWE from 2006 to 2010. This is all from the original renegade counter-culture production.
